(Ideal I#2 (fb) - BTS) - Dr. Sacotti was a notorious criminal who worked with Legsy Greggs, Corkscrew, Winch and Manners. Corkscrew, Winch and Manners were annoyed that when they divvied up the spoils from their robberies, Sacotti would cheat them. Dr. Sacotti robbed the home of lawyer Arthur Stanon, then murdered Stanton. As the police arrived, Dr. Sacotti fled Stanton's home with a copy of a will Stanton had written for the wealthy uncle of Hugo Cornish. Dr. Sacotti intended to blackmail Cornish with the will.
(Ideal I#2 (fb)) - Fleeing from the police, including Scotland Yard's Inspector Merritt, Dr. Sacotti ran near the Baker Street Library. Realizing he was about to be caught, Dr. Sacotti hid the will inside a copy of 'Famous Criminals and Their Methods' by Barry Baines inside the library. As the police caught up, Sacotti ingested drugs that seemed to kill him but actually put him into a state of seeming death. Dr. Sacotti was declared dead.
(Ideal I#2 (fb) - BTS) - Dr. Sacotti was buried in Rogues' Yard but 24 hours later the drug wore off and he escaped his burial plot. He left behind a note for Scotland Yard telling them they'd be hearing from him. However, soon after his escape from the graveyard, Dr. Sacotti was shot to death by Lou Hastings, who then assumed Dr. Sacotti's identity and leadership of his gang. Hastings concealed Dr. Sacotti's corpse inside the house where Sacotti's gang met. Hastings went ahead with the scheme Sacotti had started to blackmail Hugo Cornish.
(Ideal I#2) - When the house Sacotti's gang had been using was blasted by dynamite, Sacotti's corpse was flung out of the house and found by amateur sleuth Barry Baines, who realized the "Dr. Sacotti" he encountered previously was not the same man.

Corkscrew was one of Dr. Sacotti's underlings. When Hastings killed Dr. Sacotti and replaced him, Corkscrew cooperated with him because he'd been annoyed at Sacotti cheating him out of money in their previous jobs. Corkscrew caught Sharon Matthews spying on the disguised Hastings as he blackmailed Hugo Cornish and took her prisoner. Corkscrew tried to flee with Lou Hastings and Charlotte Fleming to South America but they were caught on the ship by Barry Baines and Jackie Lyons; Scotland Yard arrested Corkscrew.

Hugo Cornish was a multimillionaire who lived 232, Dorchester Road, Surrey. Hugo had inherited his fortune from his uncle, which included the two famous Cornish Diamonds, but his uncle's lawyer Arthur Stanton had written a will for Hugo's uncle which had disinherited him. Stanton had been blackmailing Hugo in exchange for letting him inherit his uncle's fortune. When Dr. Sacotti killed Stanton, the will fell into the hands of Lou Hastings, who impersonated Dr. Sacotti and demanded the Cornish Diamonds in exchange for his silence but Cornish had already arranged to sell the diamonds to Lord Ogleby through diamond dealer John Matthews. When Matthews arrived during Hastings' blackmail attempt, Hugo had quickly dismiss Matthews. The next day, Cornish took the diamonds out of his bank and gave them to Hastings, but when he demanded the will, Hastings drew a knife and stabbed Cornish to death.

Legsy Greggs was one of Dr. Sacotti's henchmen. After Lou Hastings impersonated Sacotti, Legsy apparently suspected his boss had been replaced. Legsy signed out a library book called 'Famous Criminals and Their Methods' by Barry Baines, having learned the real Sacotti had hidden a copy of Hugo Cornish's will inside, but Hastings, disguised as Sacotti, stabbed Greggs to death in the street and stole the book from him. Legsy's death alerted Scotland Yard to the supposed revival of the dead Dr. Sacotti.

Lou Hastings was once involved in a petroleum swindle. He seemed to reform and took a job as a coachman but actually he was still a criminal. After killing Dr. Sacotti, Hastings adopted Sacotti's identity and convinced Sacotti's henchmen he was Sacotti; apparently only Corkscrew, Winch and Manners knew Hastings was impersonating Sacotti. Hastings' wife Charlotte Fleming also assisted him in his schemes. Hastings killed Legsy Greggs to obtain a copy of the secret will Arthur Stanton had written for Hugo Cornish's uncle. Hastings blackmailed Cornish for his diamonds, then murdered Cornish and tried to throw amateur sleuth Barry Baines off his trail by attempting to mislead him to Liverpool. When that didn't work, Hastings attempted to kill Baines and his fiancee Sharon Matthews by locking them in a room with lit dynamite but Barry and Sharon escaped before the explosion. Resuming his true identity, Lou attempted to flee to South America with his wife and Corkscrew but Barry Baines, his friend Jackie Lyons and Scotland Yard's Inspector Merritt caught them on the ship; Merritt and Baines shot Hastings to death.
