He wielded the Soulsword gifted to him by his aunt, and he could open portals to Limbo with it.

History: (Wolverine: Revenge#5 (fb) - BTS) - Nikolai was the son of Piotr Rasputin, who returned to the life of farming in his native Russia. As the boy grew older, his aunt Illyana told him that his father used to be a hero but did not like to be reminded about it.
(Wolverine: Revenge#5 (fb)) - Sitting on the porch of their house, Nikolai asked his father about his heroic past. Piotr replied that he preferred farming, the way life was meant to be lived. Before going inside for dinner, Nikolai said that his father was his hero.
(Wolverine: Revenge#3 (fb) - BTS) - When a catastrophe devastated the western half of the world, Colossus sided with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants for the best of his family. They killed Captain America and Winter Soldier, but Wolverine survived and went on to hunt the Brotherhood one by one, killing Colossus in front of his house while Nikolai was inside.
(Wolverine: Revenge#5 (fb)) - Young Nikolai discovered his father's grave.
(Wolverine: Revenge#5 (fb) - BTS) - Nikolai was subsequently raised and trained by his aunt Illyana, who eventually gifted him her Soulsword.
(Wolverine: Revenge#4 (fb) - BTS) - Twenty years later, Nikolai was contacted by Sabretooth, who promised him and the Omega Clan, clones of the late Omega Red, revenge on the killer of their fathers. Nikolai and the Omegas traveled to the territory of the former Dakotas where Wolverine kept Sabretooth depowered and had been slicing off pieces of his body over the years. They spread rotting animal carcases outside Creed's house to mask their scent from Wolverine.
(Wolverine: Revenge#4 - BTS) - Nikolai and the Omegas observed Logan making his annual visit to Sabretooth and hitting him with Forge's Neutralizer once again, just in case.
(Wolverine: Revenge#4) - After Wolverine left, the Omegas were eager to go after him and departed, while Nikolai stayed behind. He and Creed watched Logan kill the Omegas through a camera, and Creed claimed that this was why Wolverine needed to be removed from the world, pushing Nikolai to claim his revenge.
(Wolverine: Revenge#5) - Wolverine returned to deal with Sabretooth, who came out to face him with Nikolai at his side. Shocked to see a visage of his former friend, Logan taunted Creed, whom Nikolai threw at their enemy as planned. Wolverine quickly put an end to the dismembered and depowered Sabretooth but noted that revenge did not make him feel better. Nikolai replied that he thought about revenge every day and that he would try to kill Wolverine even knowing that he would heal. In response, Logan hit himself with Forge's Neutralizer, saying that it would make their fight fair.
Wolverine charged at Nikolai, but he used the Soulsword to open a portal into Limbo (Otherplace) through which Logan fell through. Nikolai followed, swinging his Soulsword at Wolverine, who dodged and parried his attacks. Logan threw one of the Limbo's demonic critters at Nikolai, its acid exploding in his face. With Nikolai distracted, Wolverine pinned him down but hesitated to land a killing blow. Nikolai recovered and overpowered Logan, who goaded him into ending his life, saying that he deserved it. Nikolai buried the Soulsword deep inside Logan chest and left it there, climbing out of Limbo and closing the portal behind him.
(Wolverine: Revenge#5 - BTS) - Unbeknownst to Nikolai, Logan had messed with Forge's Neutralizer and had not in fact lost his powers. Healing from the wound, he decided to stay in Limbo, hoping that with him presumed dead, Nikolai would be able to heal and move on.
