History:
(Captain Harlock: The Machine People#1 (fb) - BTS) - During the 30th Century Earth and it colonies lost a war with the despotic Illumidas. Some rebels held out, roaming space and striking back where they could, most notably the space pirate Captain Harlock. In time the Illumidas were driven out...

(Captain Harlock: The Machine People#2 (fb) - BTS) - in part with help from groups such as the interstellar Cabal Corporation...

(Captain Harlock: The Machine People#1 (fb) - BTS) - whose leaders and key operatives were Machine People, living consciousnesses transferred into mechanical bodies (see comments) far more durable than living flesh and potentially immortal. As humanity began to rebuild, Cabal sought to take advantage of the changed status quo and began snatching up abandoned alien tech whenever they could...

(Captain Harlock: The Machine People#2 (fb) - BTS) - and offered Earth's leaders Machine Bodies of their own, hoping to entice them into a partnership.

(Captain Harlock: The Machine People#1 (fb) - BTS) - One of the Machine People was Perriman, a Cabal operative. Though Cabal kept their actions secret, rumors of them creating Machine People did leak out. Additionally, Cabal also undertook other shady activities with an ultimate aim of increasing their dominance of Earth society. 

(Captain Harlock: The Machine People#1) - Perriman was assigned to check on one such mission, where more junior human operatives, Donner and Frederick, were using a seemingly abandoned Illumidas factory as a base to hack Earth satellites. Upon entering the factory he spotted a pair of intruders, youths barely in their teens who were exploring, half just for the adventure, half in hope of finding alien tech to sell. Since the pair had just discovered and were covertly observing the two Cabal operatives Perriman snuck up behind them and took them prisoner. He chastised the two agents for their poor security, and made it clear his intention to kill the children rather than risk them becoming a problem. However, the boys were not the only intruders, and upon hearing Perriman's plans the other visitor revealed himself. Stepping out of the shadows behind Perriman, Captain Harlock told the Machine Man to release his prisoners, and pointed his laser sword at the back of Perriman's head. Confident of his artificial body's invulnerability, Perriman scoffed at the threat, but Harlock's weapon proved far more powerful than it seemed, and the next second Harlock blew the entire top of Perriman's head clean off, destroying him. With his demise he let go of the two boys and his corpse toppled lifeless from the gantry he had been standing on.

   Captain Harlock (a.k.a. Space Captain Harlock) began as a manga series in Play Comic in January 1977. It was swiftly adapted into an anime series and a movie in 1978, then another movie set in a different continuity in 1982, and another series that same year. I have no idea which if any of these continuities the Malibu version of the character is meant to fit into.

   The story doesn't make it clear whether the Machine Bodies are cyborgs containing human brains surgically transplanted into them, or androids with an A.I. brain containing a digital copy of the original person. If Harlock had left a little more of the top of Perriman's head intact, we might have had an answer to this question.

   This profile was completed on 08/09/2026, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th anniversary's celebratory event to represent Captain Harlock.
