History:
(Scarlet#1 (fb) - BTS) - As a
teenager, Gabriel dated Scarlet, who loved him and thought that he was
perfect. They lived together for a year and spent virtually all of their
free time together. They did not do drugs.
(Scarlet#1 (fb)) <A year before the
main story> - After buying coffee, Gabriel and Scarlet sat with their
friends Brandon and his girlfriend, laughing and having fun when they were
accosted by drug-addled Officer Gary Dunes.
Assuming that they were carrying drugs, Dunes ordered
them against the wall, ignoring all requests and complaints from Gabriel
and friends that they had just bought coffee and were hanging out in the
place where you could do that. When he shoved Gabriel's arms behind his
back, Gabriel asked Dunes if this was how he got his kicks, and when Dunes
demanded to know where he kept his stash, Gabriel asked "stash
of what?"
After Dunes moved to Scarlet and was clearly groping
her while padding her down, Gabriel twice told Dunes to stop, and when he
didn't, Gabriel punched in the face, bloodying his nose and mouth. Gabriel
then grabbed Scarlet's hand and ran with her.
After they got to a hiding spot in a library or
bookstore(?), they tried to figure out what to do. Gabriel initially
wanted to go the police station and report the officer, but Scarlet said
that they would arrest him for hitting a cop.
Scarlet suggested that they go home, but then Gabriel
realized the officer had taken his wallet and would be able to identify
him, meaning that he couldn't go home.
Scarlet then suggested they go to her place, but
Gabriel appreciated he couldn't go to school, as when he showed up for
graphics, they would be waiting for him and he would be kicked out of the
program.
Scarlet offered that her uncle was a lawyer and that
her mom could call him and he would know what to do.
However, Dunes then caught up them and shot Gabriel
apparently through the chest, and he fell back into a shelf of books and
died.
Scarlet could only ask, "Why?"
as Dunes put the gun to her head and then presumably shot her or otherwise
did something that left her unconscious for three weeks and with a shaved
head from presumed surgery.
(Scarlet#1 - BTS) - Via
information from the police department, Portland Press reported how
Gabriel had been a major drug lord and that Dunes had approached him after
a tip from concerned citizens and that Dunes had opened fire after threats
of further violence and a hostage situation. Deputy Commissioner Ashley
praised the brave work of the officers involved.
Inspired by this corruption, Scarlet became a
vigilante.
