History:
(Spy Cases I#27/3) - Roger Norton was a crusading newspaper editor at
the Daily Herald. One day as he was going to a meeting with Senator
Powers, he saw Marcia Lane faint nearby. He helped her into his office,
unaware she had picked his pocket for his keys. When he was certain
Marcia was well, Roger left for his meeting with the senator.
At a secret conference room, Roger was informed by Senator Powers that he wanted him to serve as the secret head of a new U.S. anti-espionage committee. Roger wondered why he had been chosen and Powers explained it was because the FBI had cleared him, his record for war and public service was unparalleled and his editorials showed "penetrating insight" into the danger of spies. Roger was flattered and agreed to accept the appointment.
Returning to his apartment, Roger was met in the lobby by Marcia, who thanked him again for his help then snuck his keys back into his pocket without his noticing. Entering his apartment, Roger found the dead body of Lewis Sanders. Just then, two FBI agents entered the apartment, having been summoned there. The FBI men asked where Roger had been but because his meeting with Senator Powers was secret, he couldn't say, making him appear suspicious. Investigating the apartment, the FBI found a forged letter which claimed he and Sanders were fellow Communists and were quarreling over leadership in their spy ring. They also found a forged Communist Party card in Roger's name. The FBI arrested Roger. A number of witnesses soon appeared, each insisting they had seen Roger go to several meetings with Sanders, as well as Communists who claimed Roger was one of them.
Finally, Roger asked the FBI to speak to Senator Powers. Powers convinced the FBI that Roger was being framed because of his recent appointment but, as that was secret information, he wasn't certain how they targeted Roger. Roger convinced Powers to release him on bail so he could discover who was behind the frame-up, certain that they would now reach out to him. One day after being released, Roger received a visit from gangster Nick Trenna, who suggested he could clear Roger's name if he agreed to work with him. Roger claimed he would do anything to stay out of prison. Once Trenna left, Roger telephoned Senator Powers to say he'd been approached by Trenna but he was certain he should face Trenna alone.
Roger went to Trenna's office that evening but found his own secretary Ethel in Trenna's office. Ethel revealed that she had always been a Communist agent loyal to Russia and by tapping his telephone and planting dictaphones, she had been sharing intelligence with Trenna and other Communist spies. Just then, Marcia entered the office to see Trenna. She was unaware she'd been working for Communists until Roger informed her. Outraged, Marcia attacked Trenna and a fight erupted, during which Marcia was shot twice. Norton obtained a gun from one of Trenna's men and killed his subordinate Lykov then shot Ethel in the arm. All of the spies were arrested.
In the aftermath, Roger met with Senator Powers, who informed him that he would have to cancel his appointment to the anti-espionage committee since his assignment had become known to the Communists. Roger left that meeting to see Marcia, who was recovering in the hospital. When she asked Roger if he could forgive her for her role in framing him, Roger replied he'd answer her on their honeymoon.

Ethel was Roger Norton's secretary at the Daily Herald newspaper but was secretly a Communist agent working alongside Nick Trenna. Ethel claimed her true loyalties were to Russia. Ethel tapped the telephones in Roger's office and planted dictaphones to record his conversations, providing intelligence on Roger's activities to the other Communist agents. When Norton refused to work with Trenna to clear his name, Ethel confronted Norton at Trenna's office, declaring he'd ruined their plans. Before they could take further action against him, they were interrupted by Marcia Lane, who was outraged when she learned she'd been working with Communists and attacked Trenna. In the fight that erupted, Norton used a gun to shoot Ethel in the right arm, declaring "It's only your dictation arm, Ethel- you won't need it anymore where you're going!" Ethel was arrested with the other spies.

Marcia Lane was an agent working for Nick Trenna. She believed she was assisting him in his gambling syndicate, unaware he was actually working as a Communist agent. Marcia pretended to faint near Norton so he would let her into his office, where she stole his apartment keys. Marcia gave the keys to Trenna's agents, which they used to murder Lewis Sanders in the apartment, framing Norton. When Marcia later walked in on a confrontation between Norton and Trenna in Trenna's office, Norton informed her she was working for Communists. Outraged, Marcia attacked Trenna and in the fight that broke out, she was shot twice by Trenna's gunmen. However, Marcia survived her wounds. In the hospital, she was visited by Norton and apologized to him for her part in the trouble that had erupted. Roger asked her to marry him.

Lykov was a Communist agent who worked for Nick Trenna. Lykov helped arrange the death of Lewis Sanders in Roger Norton's apartment. When Norton confronted Trenna in his office and Marcia Lane learned she had been working for Communists, a fight broke out during which Lykov fired his gun at Marcia, gravely injuring her. Norton used one of the gangsters' guns to kill Lykov.

Senator Powers was a U.S. senator who held a meeting with Roger Norton in which he appointed him the secret head of the anti-espionage committee, believing his record for war and public services coupled with his editorials about the danger of spies qualified him for the position. After Norton was targeted by Nick Trenna and other Communist agents because of his post, framing him for murder, Powers helped get Norton out on bail so he could clear his name. Norton succeeded in clearing his name and catching the spies responsible but Senator Powers had to withdraw the offer he'd made to Norton since his "secret" position had been known to the Communists.

Lewis Sanders was a left-wing labor organizer. Sanders was allied with the Communists but came to resist them, making him an enemy of their cause. In order to bring down Roger Norton, Nick Trenna wanted to murder Sanders in Norton's apartment, thereby ruining Norton's reputation. Sanders refused to sacrifice his life willingly to the cause but Trenna wound up murdering him in Norton's apartment. Trenna tipped off the FBI to Sanders' death and planted evidence and witnesses who would claim Norton and Sanders were associates who had met several times then had a falling out. Norton ultimately cleared his name.

Nick Trenna was a gangster who ran a gambling syndicate. He allied himself with the Communist cause but only in exchange for money. Learning from Ethel that Roger Norton would be named secret head of the U.S. anti-espionage committee, Trenna moved quickly to destroy Norton's reputation by murdering labor organizer Lewis Sanders in his apartment and planting evidence pointing to Norton as a Communist agent and former ally of Sanders who had fallen out with him. Trenna offered to clear Norton's name if he collaborated with him. Norton played along with Trenna but when Norton confronted Trenna in his office, Trenna revealed he and his fellow spies knew Norton was trying to expose them. When Trenna's subordinate Marcia learned Trenna was working with the Communists, she turned against Trenna. In the fight that erupted, at least one of Trenna's men, Lykov, was killed. Norton defeated Trenna and his men and had them arrested.
