History:
(Daring Mystery Comics I#1/8) - In Lisbon, Portugal, Barney accepted an assignment to bring gold filigree to Rotterdam. As the Netherlands were embroiled in World War II and the Atlantic was full of military crafts, Mullen accepted it would be a risky assignment. Mullen's employer warned him that ships from either side of the conflict would try to sink him for fear he was shipping supplies to the other side. Mullen loaded sand into his ship's hold as ballast. After collecting sailors from Portugal including Joe Gonzagez, Mullen started the voyage to Rotterdam.
Off Cape Finisterro, a British cruiser attempted to halt Mullen's ship but a German plane piloted by Manfred attacked the cruiser, enabling Mullen to attempt to flee as the cruiser fought the plane. Manfred contacted submarine S-48 (whose crew included Eric) and the submarine attacked the cruiser, torpedoing it. S-48 also fired a torpedo at Mullen but it struck a compartment of sand, doing little damage. However, this caused a mutiny among the crew as some of the men considered the assignment too dangerous. One of the sailors threw a knife at Mullen, starting a fight but Mullen and his loyal crew defeated the mutineers.
With several men injured, Mullen put in at a nearby French fishing village to receive a doctor. When French officials questioned Mullen about his shipment and learned about the gold filigree they told him he was there without permission from the government and offered to settle affairs for a "consideration" (bribe). Refusing, Mullen threw the officials over the side of his ship.
As Mullen neared Rotterdam, the steam pressure in the ship's boilers caused an explosion. Mullen's ship was lost but he loaded all the gold filigree into the lifeboats, delivering them to the shipping company in Rotterdam. Mullen said that for what he was being paid he didn't mind losing his ship.

Barney also appeared in Centaur's Funny Pages I#40 (August, 1940) without so much as changing the name of the feature, which suggests Marvel didn't own Barney - but since Centaur's comics have fallen into the public domain, that doesn't hurt Barney any. Both of his stories were drawn by Charles Pearson, who was a member of the Funnies, Inc. studio which supplied many of the stories in the earliest Marvel comics (but also supplied other publishers, such as Centaur and Lev Gleason). All I know about his appearance in Funny Pages I#40 is what the Grand Comics Database entry states: "Steve West in Rio de Janeiro is asked to sail a cargo of coffee to Mogodoro in Morocco."
