History:
(Battleground I#14/3) - Still a teenager, Jesse Morse joined the U.S.
Army to fight in World War I as a private. One night, his patrol left
their trenches to survey enemy terrain in preparation for an attack on
the Germans in two days' time. As the patrol entered no man's land,
Morse's his sergeant complained that his awkward blundering gave away
their position to the Germans. When the Germans started shelling them,
Morse lost his balance and fell into a shell crater.
Morse reproached himself his nerves and tried to locate his patrol in the dark without calling out to them. He crawled through no man's land, unable to find his patrol until he discovered he'd wandered into the woods. Hidden by a clump of trees, he saw a line of German soldiers and realized he'd entered enemy territory. Jesse hid himself inside a hollow tree trunk and observed as the Germans set down mines in the woods, leaving rocks as markers. Seeing a nearby trench with a heavy machine gun, Jesse realized the Germans intended to use decoys to draw U.S. soldiers into the minefield, using the stone markers so their men would seem to be marching across bare ground. When the Germans departed, Jesse ran over and began marking the safe path with pebbles, then moved the markers the Germans had left behind.
At dawn, the Germans returned to begin their attack but, due to the moved markers, they walked into their own minefield. In the confusion, Jesse returned back to his own lines and informed them of what he'd done. When an officer heard what Jesse had accomplished, he wondered why Jess was considered a "blunderer." The officer thanked Jesse for his work and promised he'd earn his stripes for his actions. The rest of Jesse's company thanked him as well for dismantling the mines that would have harmed them. Jesse continued to fight alongside his company, no longer thinking of himself as a gawky, blundering kid but instead a confident soldier.
