History:

of Elaine Marston and her husband that eventually passed away, leaving
Elaine a widow at a young age.

- A year later, Buttons was brought along for a ski trip with her
mother Elaine and her new boyfriend, Buck Cowan. When they arrived to
pick up Buck's friends Jack Russell and Topaz, Buttons was introduced
to them and she commented on how Topaz was a "funny name," prompting
Elaine to scold her. Buttons followed up by stating that, while a funny
name, Topaz was neat before she asked if Jack and Topaz were married.
Topaz nervously explained that they were not married, at which point
Buttons blurted out that it was good because she wanted to marry the
"reeeeel priddy" Jack. Buck Cowan teased Jack about Buttons' comment as
the group went off on the trip to the mountains. Four hours later, the
group arrived at the ski resort and when both Jack and Topaz fell on
their skis into each other's arms, Buttons hit Jack with a snowball and
promised there was more to come if they wanted to get mushy. Pretending
to be angry, Jack jokingly went after Buttons, claiming she had angered
the abominable snowman. Topaz then hit Jack from behind with another
snowball and Topaz and Buttons then surrounded Jack and hit him with a
barrage of more snowballs. Watching from a distance, Buck and Elaine
asked that Jack let them know if Buttons got to be too much. Jack
eventually caught Topaz and Buttons and they all fell in the snow, at
which point Buttons playfully suggested that she and Topaz both marry
Jack.
The next day, as a blizzard was
forecast for the area, Jack departed the resort, claiming he had to get
back to work early, and Buttons bid him a goodbye, hoping they could
play again sometime soon. A short time later, as Buck was returning
from secretly dropping Jack off in the woods to await his
transformation into the Werewolf, he saw police at the ski resort and
learned from Elaine that Buttons had wandered off into the woods in the
middle of the blizzard. Realizing that Buttons could be lost in the
woods with the Werewolf, Buck confiscated a snowmobile and drove out
into the woods alone to find her. Buck immediately traveled back to
where he'd left Jack but saw the Werewolf's footprints heading back
towards the resort and became worried for Buttons, who was wandering in
the woods crying and apologizing for wanting to play in the snow. When
she saw a man in the distance, Buttons yelled for help, only to quickly
realize it was the Werewolf.
(Werewolf by Night I#31) - Buttons tried to run but
the Werewolf pursued and Buck Cowan appeared on the scene seconds
later.

(fb)) - When the Werewolf caught Buttons, Buck launched himself from
the snowmobile to tackle the Werewolf and save Buttons.
(Werewolf by Night I#31) - Buttons warned Buck not to
fight the Werewolf but Buck ordered Buttons to run for her life.
Buttons instead stayed and when the Werewolf slashed Buck, Buttons
yelled at him, prompting the Werewolf to turn his attention back to
Buttons. Buck pulled himself back to his feet and again came to
Buttons' defense, picking up a branch to hit the Werewolf with. When
that attack failed, a severely weakened Buck fell to his knees and
crawled to Buttons, insisting that the Werewolf would have to kill him
before he'd let the transformed Jack Russell kill a little girl.
(Werewolf by Night I#31 / Werewolf by Night I#32
(fb)) - Buck then put his body over Buttons' to protect her and told
her to lie still as the Werewolf slashed Buck once more before running
off into the woods.
(Werewolf by Night I#31) - Buttons eventually crawled
free and tried to revive the unresponsive Buck. Drawn by Buttons'
crying, police soon arrived on the scene to save Buttons and she
insisted a monster-man had killed her "Unca Buck."
(Werewolf by Night I#32 (fb)) - Buttons accompanied her mother to the hospital as Buck received emergency treatment for the wounds suffered at the hands of the Werewolf. While there, Buttons laid down in her mother's lap and Elaine suggested Buttons try to get some sleep. Once Buttons fell asleep, Elaine Marston suggested the visiting Jack Russell, Lissa Russell and Topaz go home and get some rest while they waited to see if Buck would recover. Lissa reluctantly agreed but offered to help if Elaine needed someone to watch over Buttons.
(Werewolf by Night I#33) -
Buttons was by Elaine's side when the doctor brought them into Buck
Cowan's hospital room to inform Elaine that Buck had briefly emerged
from his coma. As the doctor informed Elaine of the severity of Buck's
nerve damage and asked if they were close, Buttons asked if "Unca Buck"
was going to be alright, to which Elaine just replied that they would
talk about it later. Buttons then asked her mother why she was crying,
childishly assuming Buck would simply get better like she did when sick.
(Werewolf by Night I#34 (fb) - BTS) - As Elaine went in to visit the
semi-conscious Buck, Lissa Russell and Topaz babysat Buttons, who
enjoyed a popsicle.
(Werewolf by Night I#34 (fb)) - While Buttons was still enjoying her
popsicle, Elaine spoke with Jack Russell regarding the words Buck spoke
before falling back into his coma.
(Werewolf by Night I#42 (fb) - BTS) - After Buck Cowan was released
from the hospital and was recovering in Malibu, Elaine and Buttons
Marston traveled to California to visit him.
(Werewolf by Night I#42) - While Buck and Elaine were discussing
Buck's recovery, Lissa Russell asked if anyone wanted some hot
chocolate and Buttons announced that she did, offering to help Lissa
get it.

Spider-Woman I#19 (fb)) - Moments later, a crash erupted from the
kitchen and Buttons came running back into the living room screaming
that a bad man had taken Lissa.
(Werewolf by Night I#42) - A confused Elaine questioned Buttons but
Buck drew a handgun from a nearby drawer and ordered Elaine to stay
there with Buttons and phone the police while he investigated. Elaine
insisted Buck couldn't go into the kitchen alone and Buttons expressed
worry that the "bad man" would kill Buck but Buck assured them that he
had to check on Lissa.
(Spider-Woman I#19 (fb) - BTS) - After discovering that Lissa had fainted due to the sudden appearance of Buck's old employer, a shocked Buck watched as his employer burst into flames and set Buck's house on fire, prompting Buck to rush to get Buttons and Elaine to safety.
(Iron Man I#209 - BTS) - Years later, when Jack Russell ran into
Buck Cowan at a renaissance festival, he asked Buck how Elaine and
Buttons were doing and Buck replied that they were both older, noting
that there wasn't much more to say.

It was never revealed it "Buttons"
was a nickname or her true legal name. I'd lean more towards it being a
nickname but you never know...
