Powers/Abilities: The Aboriginal Australian gods all possess certain superhuman physical attributes. They are true immortals who cease to age upon reaching adulthood, and they cannot die by conventional means.

The Aboriginal Australian gods are immune to all terrestrial diseases and are resistant to conventional injury. If an Aboriginal Australian god is wounded, his or her godly life force will enable him or her to recover at a superhuman rate. It would take an injury of such magnitude that it incinerates an Aboriginal Australian god or disperses a major portion of his or her bodily molecules to cause him or her to die. Even then, it may be possible for a god of greater or equal power, or several gods acting together, to revive the deceased god before the god's life essence is beyond resurrection.

Aboriginal god flesh and bone are about two times denser than similar human tissue, contributing to the gods' superhuman strength and weight. An average male god can lift about 20 tons; an average goddess can lift about 10 tons (although, as a storm god, it is suspected that Mamaragan possesses physical strength and durability that surpasses that of the average male Aboriginal Australian god).

Though generally weaker than Asgardian and Olympian deities, the Aboriginal gods have the unique ability to navigate the Dreamtime with ease.

The gods' metabolism gives them superhuman endurance in all physical activities. Most Aboriginal gods are skilled metamorphs and possess the ability to shift all or portions of their bodies into the forms of animals and other natural objects.

Many Aboriginal gods also possess additional superhuman powers that may be magical or spiritual in nature. For instance, Mamaragan possesses the ability to control storm clouds and emit thunder-like sonic shock waves. He can also channel lightning into his Aboriginal hunting stick (waddy) for offensive maneuvers (see comments).

He often uses the giant gecko known as Ilpilya as his mount, charging into battle atop the back of the tempest-spewing reptile.

Mamaragan & Ipilya attacking StormHistory:

(Thor & Hercules: Encyclopaedia Mythologica#1) - The Aboriginal Australian gods' precise origin, like that of all Earth's pantheons, is shrouded in legend. According to ancient myths, the god Altjira directed the other Aboriginal gods to temporarily leave the Dreamtime and descend to the Australian continent within the Earth realm eons ago when the land was barren and featureless. The gods shaped the landscape according to Altjira's plan. While Julunggul the Rainbow Serpent carved out gullies that became rivers and Baiame gave form to the mountains and forests, Mamaragan held domain over the lightning and storms.

(Myth) - While in the Earth realm, Mamaragan came to be revered as a sacred ancestral being by the ancient aboriginal peoples of the Australian continent (particularly the Kunwinjku people residing within Arnhem Land), viewed as a "Lightning Man" who inhabited a billabong and spoke with thunder as his voice.

(Storm V#7 (fb) - BTS) - In modern times, in anticipation of the return of the powerful Mesopotamian storm god Ba'al-Hadad of the Annunaki, Mamaragan (along with fellow storm gods Chaac of the Ahau, Shango of the Vod?, Susanoo of the Amatsu-Kami) ventured to the Earth realm and conjured a destructive weather anomaly in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil which killed a pilot working for Tony Stark. .

(Storm V#7) - The mutant Storm (Ororo Munroe), at the time possessed by the abstract/cosmic entity Eternity, was dispatched by Tony Stark to investigate the weather anomaly and retrieve the pilot, at which time she was ambushed by Mamaragan, Chaac, Shango, and Susanoo.

Although Mamaragan (riding atop Ipilya) charged at Storm, she was able to defeat him and the other storm gods using a combination of her weather-manipulating mutant powers and innate magical abilities inherited as a descendant of the Elder Goddess Oshtur.

(Storm V#11) - Later, Mamaragan and many other storm gods convened at meeting led by Zeus at Hjem Spíti, a pocket dimension which served as a neutral realm for all Earth's god pantheons. Each assembled storm god was asked whether they wanted to join forces with the ancient storm god Ba'al Hadad (who plotted to destroy the current universe and create a new universe) or side with the self-proclaimed storm god Ororo Munroe (who, possessed by the abstract entity Eternity, endeavored to protect the current universe).

Mamaragan, who viewed Ororo Munroe as a weak mortal, was jealous that Eternity (the embodiment of the current universe) passed him over and instead chose Munroe as its champion. Although Mamaragan, along with many other of the storm gods, voted to side with Ba'al Hadad over Ororo Munroe, Hadad soon attacked the entire congregation at Hjem Spíti with a group of Black Winters (a race of universe-consuming entities) under his control, effectively neutralizing the assembled storm deities.

Luciano Vecchio 2025 redesign    Although Mamaragan was first depicted in the Marvel Universe in 2009's Thor & Hercules: Encyclopaedia Mythologica #1 by Ben Oliver and Anthony Flamini, he (along with every other storm god featured in the story) was redesigned by artist Luciano Vecchio for his appearance in the 2024-2025 Storm series.

While the Mamaragan/Namarrkon oral legends are associated with the Kunwinjku / Bininj people residing within Arnhem Land (in Australia's current Northern Territory), the gecko Ipilya is based on ipilja-ipilja, a giant gecko from the mythologies of the Anindilyakwa / Warnumamalya people inhabiting several islands in the Gulf of Carpentaria off the northern coast of Australia.

In his appearance in Storm V#7, Mamaragan wielded what appeared to be a curved, flattened waddy (a hardwood hunting stick used as a traditional melee and/or projectile weapon by the Aboriginal people of Australia) when battling Storm (Ororo Munroe). This would be an appropriate weapon for a character based on Australian Aboriginal legend. However, in his subsequent appearance in Storm V#11, Mamaragan wielded what appeared to be a Japanese katana blade when defending himself against the ambush by Hadad and the Black Winters. It's unknown whether this choice was intentional or due to artist error. Incidentally, Mamaragan was standing next to the Japanese storm god Susanoo when wielding the katana, so he may have just been borrowing his fellow storm god's weaponry while defending himself from the surprise attack.
