History:
(Monsters Unleashed I#1/7 (fb) - BTS) - A millennia ago, a planet passed through the radioactive trail of a comet. The radiation caused mutations on the planet, creating the crystalline Overseers. It also opened a gateway into the "Nether Worlds." Makkador was one of the beings from the Nether World who crossed over to what became known as the "Warlock World" as magic took dominance over the planet. The Overseers resisted the efforts of Makkador to conquer the planet.

(Monsters Unleashed I#1/7) - Wishing to be rid of the Overseers, Makkador cast a spell to summon forth a warrior who could slay them. His spell reached out to the planet Earth and ensnared US Army soldier Brian Morgan as he was wandering through the Tam Hiep River in Vietnam. As the mantle spell worked to bring Brian to Makkador's presence, Brian saw Krandiks trying to abduct Myrilla and went to save her. As he fought a Krandik, he hurled it into the mantle. The spell recognized that the Krandik was not the same person as Brian based on his heartbeat and instantly slew the Krandik.

Finally, another mantle spell drew Brian and Myrilla to Makkador's presence. Makkador revealed he could speak English and thus communicate to Brian. He claimed his world was in the thrall of the Overseers and that only Brian could slay those creatures and liberate the planet. To ensure Brian would do this, Makkador took Myrilla as a hostage, promising to return her when the Overseers were dead. Makkador cast a curtain spell, which transported Brian across the planet to the where the Overseers dwelled.

However, the Overseers reasoned with Brian and explained Makkador's desire to conquer the planet. Brian refused to kill them and they sent Brian back to Makkador. Seeing that Brian had failed in his mission, Makkador conjured up an army of imps to kill him. However, Brian's sword had been bathed in the light of the Overseers which granted it the properties of "demon poison" so that the sword could easily destroy the imps. Brian liberated Myrilla then stalked forth to slay Makkador. Realizing he was doomed, Makkador called upon the Nether Gods to take him into their world so that he could continue to serve them. With that, Makkador vanished, evidently brought into the Nether Lands.

Comments: Created by Gardner Fox, Roy Thomas and Gene Colan.

This is a pretty standard planetary romance story, very clearly derivative of Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter stories (note that Brian gains superhuman strength in Makkador's world, also that he's a soldier and arrives with experience in swordfighting, all like Carter). Of course, Gardner Fox wrote a lot of prose novels of that type (ie, Warrior of Llarn).

This was pretty clearly set up to be an ongoing feature if there was interest. Evidently there was not.

CLARIFICATIONS:
Makkador should not be confused with:

Krandiks

Krandiks were men native to the "Warlock World." They rode upon flying lizard-like creatures and carried swords and bola-like instruments as weapons. When Brian Morgan arrived in "Warlock World," he saw a band of Krandiks abducting Myrilla to enslave her. Choosing to rescue her, Brian fought the Krandiks and hurled one of them into the mantle portal Makkador had meant for Brian. Because the Krandik's heartbeat was different from Brian's, the spell which was supposed to bring Brian to Makkador's presence instead instantly slew the Krandik. The Krandik's clothing and sword were unaffected by the spell, permitting Brian to claim them as his own. Brian easily rescued Myrilla from the other Krandiks.

Brian Morgan

Brian Morgan was a PFC (private first class) in the US Army 53rd platoon serving in Vietnam. He happened to have been a sabre champion at Michigan State University. When Makkador sought to kill the Overseers, he cast a spell which brought Brian from the Tam Hiep River in Vietnam to his world. Brian lost his clothing during the transition and arrived to see Krandiks on winged creatures abducting Myrilla. He attacked the men, discovering he had gained some measure of superhuman strength, and stripped clothing and a sword from one of the abductors. He set Myrilla free and she began to explain some of her language to Brian.

Makkador brought Brian and Myrilla to his presence and explained he had brought Brian to the Warlock World so that he could kill the Overseers, whom he claimed were tyrants. To ensure Brian would comply, Makkador kept Myrilla as a hostage. Makkador cast a spell which sent Brian to the Overseers' land but when the Overseers saw that Brian was not a demon, they explained their history to him and Makkador's villainous intentions. Brian refused to kill the Overseers and they sent him back to Makkador. Makkador conjured up imps to kill Brian but Brian slew them, discovering that his sword had gained "demon poison" from exposure to the Overseers' light. Brian liberated Myrilla and was about to slay Makkador when Makkador called upon his Nether Gods to take him into their realm. With Makkador gone, Brian was stranded on the Warlock World but he seemed content to remain there with Myrilla.

In the Warlock World, Brian had a degree of superhuman strength (possibly enhanced level). He was able an swordsman and after being bathed in the light of the Overseers, his sword acquired "demon poison" which enabled it to slay demonic creatures almost instantly.

Myrilla

Myrilla was a woman native to the "Warlock World." When a band of Krandiks tried to abduct her, she was rescued by the newly-arrived Brian Morgan. Although she could not speak English, she was able to share her name and a few examples of her language with Brian. Makkador took Myrilla as a hostage in order to force Brian's compliance in his plot to exterminate the Overseers. However, Brian refused to complete the task, fought Makkador and rescued Myrilla. Although Brian was seemingly trapped on the Warlock World, he seemed content to remain with Myrilla.

The Nether Gods

The Nether Gods are the beings whom Makkador worshiped. They were said to dwell in the "Nether Lands." Makkador referenced the deities Abaddon and Lilith. When Makkador was about to be killed by Brian Morgan, Makkador called on the Nether Gods to bring him to their realm so that he could continue to serve them. Makkador then vanished, his request having evidently been granted.

--Monsters Unleashed I#1/7 - BTS

None of them appeared on panel. Lilith could possibly be the same entity as the Mesopotomian Lilith. Abaddon is derived from the Hebrew word which means "place of destruction." Somehow over the centuries, it shifted from being a name for a place to that of a person - see Abadon, f'r instance.

Overseers

The Overseers were beings who manifested in the forms of immense crystals. They were referred to as "living jewels." They were created from mutations caused by a comet's path traveling past a planet. That same comet also brought in creatures from the "Nether World," including Makkador. The Overseers benevolently guarded what they dubbed the "Warlock World" using their powers to resist the forces of magic. Unable to vanquish the Overseers directly, Makkador brought Brian Morgan from Earth to accomplish the task, as Brian proved to be immune to the Overseers' destructive powers. However, the Overseers reasoned with Brian and explained the Warlock World's history to him. Realizing that killing the Overseers would endanger all life on the Warlock World, Brian refused to harm them. They cast him back to Makkador's presence, whereupon Brian discovered that because his sword had been bathed in the Overseers' destructive energies, it was now "demon poison" and could easily eliminate Makkador's creatures.

The Overseers emitted rays of light from their bodies which were destructive to demons and other magical beings. These rays had no effect on beings from other worlds, such as Brian Morgan.
