History:
(Lensman: Secret of the Lens#1 (fb) - BTS) - In Reality-84106 the history of the universe differs significantly from many other timelines. The Arisians originated in the Milky Way galaxy some ten billion years ago. A benevolent and peaceful species that in time evolved into beings of pure spiritual energy, they decided to watch over the newer species that were arising across the galaxy. The Eddorians by contrast a silicon-based species that originated in a multidimensional universe parallel to the "main" one. Lacking emotions, especially the concept of love, they became devoted to conquest. Five billion years ago they conquered Andromeda, the galaxy neighboring the Milky Way, which they dubbed the Landmark Nebula, but when they sought to move on to their next target they found themselves opposed by the Arisians. Discovering that direct conflict between the two would literally destroy both, like matter meeting anti-matter, both sides elected to work through proxies. The Arisians chose four planets - Sol 3, Rigel 4, Velentia 3 and Palainian 7 - whose inhabitants they deemed would ultimately be capable of producing enhanced Lensmen fighters, and set about directing the evolution first of species and then of civilizations.

Back in the Landmark Nebula the Eddorians likewise worked to evolve beings who could serve their interests. One of these were the Kalonians, developed from crustaceans. Once their lackey species were sufficiently technologically advanced, the Eddorians integrated them into a single military organization, the Boskone Empire, which the Kalonians headed. When they launched their invasion of the "First Galaxy" the Arisians helped covertly directed their chosen species into forming the Triplanetary Alliance in A.D. 2286 to oppose them; this grouping later was renamed first the Galactic Council and then the Galactic Patrol. Their greatest operatives were the Lensmen, beings whose mental and psychological abilites had been enhanced by Lens created and gifted to them by Arisians, and which look like discs worn on the back of the Lensmen's hands. The conflict between the two organizations would continue for the next few centuries.

(Lensman: Galactic Patrol#3 (fb) - BTS) - Late in the 25th century the Kalonian scientist Lord Shargen was performing unauthorized experiments to see if he could create better soldiers for the Boskone Empire. He recognized that while Boskone's forces had the edge in bulk and numbers, humans (and presumably other Galactic Patrol species) had greater brain capacity and reaction time. After at least one successful prototype experiment in fuzing lifeforms created Kuto, a cross between a snake and something eight-legged (akin to a spider?), he turnd his intentions to fuzing humans with Kalonians. A Base Commander at a Thionite Plant on a remote planetoid in Boskonian territory, Shargen used prisoners to test his theories, but he was working without clearance from Boskone, and he risked demotion if he failed since his experiments diverted prisoners away from their intended purpose as slave labor manufacturing Thionite. This was the most addictive (for humans) drug known to civilization, which Boskone used in an attempt to make the Galactic Patrol crumble from within, and the captive humans used to prepare it were kept pliant by making the workers all addicts too. However, this addiction also rendered the test subjects unable to survive the fusion process, causing all of Shargen's experiments to fail.

(Lensman: Galactic Patrol#2) - Shargen's assistant Adoron reported the demise of another test subject to Lord Shargen, confirming their suspicions that Thionite addicts were too weak to survive the fusion process. However Adoron informed Shargen that fresh cargo (i.e. prisoners) had just been delivered, ones presumably not yet exposed to Thionite, prompting Shargen to announce that he wanted all of them scheduled for his treatment, determined his experiment would succeed and so raise him to the pinnacle of Boskone power even if he had to destroy every single human captive.

(Lensman: Galactic Patrol#3) - Shortly thereafter Adoron informed Shargen that he had spotted a human intruder dressed in a Galactic Patrol uniform within the base. Shargen dispatched Kuto, and the creature swiftly captured the man, pilot Henry Henderson, one of a group whose ship had been damaged in battle with Boskone forces and forced to land on the planetoid, and who now sought to destroy the Thionite plant. Unaware of Henderson's specific motives or that he was not alone within the base, Shargen set his new captive up to be the next test subject. When Henry asked him what he was trying to achieve Shargen, used to his victims being too drug-addled to speak, chose to humor the man and explained his intent. Noting that Henderson had around a 7% chance of survival, much higher than prior subjects, Shargen was about to begin the test when Henry's crewmater, Tye Thomas, intervened. As he began to free Henderson, Shargen again released Kuto, but Thomas impaled the beast with a well-thrown blade, causing Kuto to convulse and begin firing its back-blaster indiscriminately. Shargen avoided being shot only because Adoron blocked what might have been a fatal blast with his own body. The base commander fled, but moments later as the humans escaped booby traps set by Thomas went off, blowing the base to smithereens. Whether or not Shargen survived the explosions remains unrevealed.

The Galactic Lensmen comics published by Eternity Comics were based on the anime series Galactic Patrol Lensman which first aired on October 6th 1984. That in turn was based on E.E. Doc Smith's Lensman novels, the first of which, Triplanetary, was serialized in Amazing Stories magazine starting with the January 1934 issue, and later collected into novel form in 1948. However, the anime made so many changes to the source material that Smith's heirs disowned it, despite having initially given it permission to use the copyrighted material. The Lensman saga was highly influential on subsequent science fiction works, and the concept of powerful aliens giving exceptional individuals power enhancing devices caused many to suspect that DC's Green Lanterns were based on the Lensmen. While Green Lantern's first editor, Julius Schwartz, denied any such connection, subsequent GL writers nevertheless paid homage to Lensmen, as evidenced by the creation of the Green Lanterns Arisia and Eddore.

Since Eternity was an imprint of Malibu, and Malibu was later bought out by Marvel, these comics now fall under the aegis of titles eligible for Appendix coverage.

CLARIFICATIONS:
Lord Shargen has no known connections to:

Adoron

A Kalonian, Adoron was Lord Shargen's lab assistant. He informed Shargen of the latest test subject's demise and that fresh captives were coming in, not yet exposed to Thionite. He issued Shargen's orders to redirect those prisoners from Thionite production to his lab, and when a Kalonian overseer cancelled that order Adoron personally vaporized him.

He later informed Shargen that he had spotted a human intruder, Galactic Patrol pilot Henry Henderson, on his monitors, and watched as Shargen sent his pet Kuto to capture the man. Once this was achieved, Adoron prepared to carry out his master's fusion process on Henderson, and was about to pluck out Henderson's eyes on Shargen's instructions when another human intruder, Tye Thomas, came to Henderson's rescue. During this Tye impaled Kuto with a thrown knife; the creature began firing its built-in blaster reflexively, and Adoron dived in front of Shargen and urged him to flee before being gunned down by the random shots.

Kuto

Kuto was a successful prototype experiment of Shargen's, a creature that looked like a cross between a large spider and a snake, with a blaster built into its back. It normally sat at the end of Lord Shargen's staff, wrapped round the end inert, looking like a bizarre ornament, but when activated it would leap off and race away to hunt down and subdue anyone Shargen sent it after. It was sent after pilot Henry Henderson and successfully captured him for Shargen, but then combat specialist Tye Thomas came to rescue Henderson. Shargen again unleashed Kuto, but Tye had experience dealing with alien bugs and threw a knife through Kuto's neck. Dying, Kuto began spasming and reflexively firing its blaster, gunning down Shargen's Kalonian staff and nearly slaying Shargen too.
