History:
(Men's Adventures I#4 (fb)) - Ronald Lippincott was disdained by his father, who constantly berated him, calling him a coward. When Ronald was a boy, he refused to fight another boy who had challenged him, earning him a lecture from his father. When Ronald went to high school and joined the Dunham debate team, his father berated him for not joining the boxing team. When Ronald went to college and chose to become a medical doctor, Elliot complained that he hadn't chosen to be an engineer.

(Men's Adventures I#4) - Ronald's father Elliot liked to go on an African safari each year but every year, Ronald would decline to accompany him. One year when Ronald said he didn't want to go, Elliot exploded at him, saying he was ashamed Ronald was his son. Ronald conferred with his mother, wanting to know if he really was a failure like his father claimed. Margaret noted that her husband had the fault of setting everyone else's standards of achievement and way of life by his own code. Noting that Ronald had wanted to win his father's friendship, Margaret suggested he accompany his father on the safari and see if he could change his father's opinion of him. Ronald agreed and decided to postpone his enrollment into medical school. Elliot was ecstatic when Ronald informed him he'd be joining him on the safari.

    The next morning, Ronald was surprised to find his father in a playful mood as Elliot entered his room and started a pillow fight. They went out together that day to obtain all the supplies Ronald would need for the safari, went to a New York Yankees game and ended the day at a theater premiere that evening.

    On July 17, 1949, Ronald accompanied his parents in his father's personal plane down to Miami, Florida then took an international flight to Dakar, Senegal. They then traveled over land to a village in Sudan. Elliot's guide Zumbo greeted them at the village but without the porters he had promised to supply, he warned them of a dangerous gorilla on the loose in the area and noted that he couldn't find men willing to serve as porters for their safari. Undaunted, Elliot resolved that the three of them would go on safari without any guides or porters. Ronald thought they should heed Zumbo's advice to remain cautious but he didn't want to disappoint his father.

    For hours they journeyed through the jungle together as Elliot explained to Ronald how to read the tracks they discovered. The wound up on the trail of a lion. When they came into view of the lion, Elliot told Ronald to shoot the lion. However, Ronald couldn't bring himself to fire his gun and froze up. The lion started to charge them and at the last moment, Elliot shot it. Once again, Elliot flew into a fury of anger, smashing Ronald's rifle and declaring Ronald was a coward who didn't deserve to carry one of his guns.

    Suddenly, the gorilla Zumbo had mentioned lunged out of the jungle and grabbed Elliot. Elliot stabbed it with his knife but the gorilla dragged him away into the jungle. Margaret fainted so Ronald first tended to her to see she was well. Once Margaret recovered, they followed the gorilla's trail through the jungle to its lair. Elliot was still alive but badly mangled by the gorilla. Examining nearby plants, Ronald identified one as being poisonous. Fashioning a spear, Ronald coated the tip with poison then attacked the gorilla, stabbing it in the stomach. The gorilla knocked Ronald down then died from the poison.

    Ronald was injured from the gorilla's dying blows but Margaret tended to him and Elliot for two weeks while they recovered. Zumbo set out in search of the family and when he saw that Ronald had killed the gorilla, he declared he would be made their chief, impressing Elliot. Elliot declared he was now proud to call him his son. When they returned to the United States, Elliot and Margaret saw Ronald off as he went to medical school.

Elliot Lippincott

Elliot Lippincott was Ronald's father and Margaret's husband. Elliot was a wealthy industrialist who got his start as a copper miner. He eventually built up a fortune and became owner of Lippincott Industries, who manufactured steel, iron, concrete, plastics, glass and copper. He boasted that many buildings in New York City were constructed using materials from his factories. Elliot enjoyed big game hunting and went on an African safari each year. He looked down on Ronald because he wasn't interested in hunting, thinking it would "make a man" out of him. He thought Ronald's chosen profession of medical doctor was unmanly. Elliot was pleased when Ronald finally agreed to accompany him on safari and for a while they were on good terms but when Ronald froze up the first time he tried to fire a rifle, Elliot again looked down on him. After Elliot was captured by a dangerous gorilla, Ronald risked his life to kill the gorilla. Margaret tended to Elliot and Ronald's injuries and Elliot was left impressed with both of them. Afterward he was proud to call Ronald his son and saw him off to medical school.

Margaret Lippincott

Margaret Lippincott was Elliot's wife and Ronald's mother. Margaret had sympathy for Ronald's attempts to win his father's favor and noted that Elliot judged everyone by his own exacting standards. She convinced Ronald to accompany Elliot on safari in an attempt to build a friendship between the two of them. After Elliot was captured by a gorilla and Ronald was badly wounded killing the gorilla, Margaret took care of both men until they were well enough to travel, impressing Elliot by fending for all them in the wilderness. The safari came to a happy conclusion as Elliot and Ronald were finally reconciled and Ronald went on to medical school.

Zumbo

Zumbo was a Sudanese man who served as a guide to the Lippincott family during their safari. Zumbo was supposed to bring porters for their safari but couldn't find workers because they were afraid of a dangerous gorilla in the area. When Ronald ultimately slew the gorilla, Zumbo declared he would make Ronald their chief as a sign of honor.
