LIGHTNINGBOLT
Real
Name: Rand
Identity/Class: Extraterrestrial (Galadorian) cyborg
Occupation: Spaceknight
Group Membership: Spaceknights of Galador (Firefall/Tarn, Hammerhand/Bron, Javelin/Darin, Liberator/Tristan, Pulsar/Lan, Scanner/Rhanla, Sentry/Val, Starshine/Anarra, Terminator/Balin)
Affiliations: Starshine (Anarra)
Enemies: Deathwing, Dire Wraiths, Wraith Knights
Known Relatives: None
Aliases: None
Base of Operations: Galador
First
Appearance: Spaceknights#2 (November 2000)
Powers/Abilities: All of Lightningbolt's powers
derived from his heavily armored cybernetic armor; unlike prior
Spaceknight generations, while Rand's third-generation possessed rare
genetic templates allowing them to bond with and control their armors,
they were not required to be surgically implanted in same, and could
remove the armor completely when repairs were required. Lightningbolt
wielded electricity, as his name suggested, allowing him to fire
lightning. Like other Spaceknights, he might also have been able to
banish individuals to Limbo, strip away Wraith disguises, access
computers and teleport interstellar distances using the living light. He
had superhuman strength to an unspecified level. He also had the ability
to fly via rocket pods mounted in twin nacelles on his back; his top
speed was unrevealed, but presumably at least as good as the prior
Lightningbolts', matching or exceeding the velocity required to achieve
solar system escape velocity (36 mile per second, out of atmosphere), or
the lower maximum speed of Mach 4 (about 3000 miles per hour) inside an
atmosphere before heat buildup from friction caused detrimental effects
to his external sensor arrays. He
could survive indefinitely in outer space, and, though he was
not shown to do so, could probably fly interstellar distances.
Lightningbolt's Plandanium armor was capable of withstanding
temperatures at least matching his predecessors' limits, from 8000
degrees Fahrenheit to -350 degrees Fahrenheit. It was capable of
withstanding ballistic impacts of up to large antitank weaponry, and
over pressures of up to 40 pounds per square inch (the equivalent of the
blast effects of 1000 pounds of TNT at the range of 100 feet) with out
damage or impairment of functions.
Height: (armor) 6'3" (by approximation); (as
humanoid) 5'11" (by approximation)
Weight: (armor) 585 lbs. (by approximation); (as humanoid) 150
lbs. (by approximation)
Eyes: (as cyborg) Red visual
sensors; (as humanoid) unrevealed
Hair: (as cyborg) None; (as
humanoid) Brown
History:
(Spaceknights#1 (fb) - BTS) - Years
after the planet Galador was devastated by the rogue second generation
Spaceknights, Galador had been rebuilt. A new, third generation of
Spaceknights, was developed to defend Galador, again chosen from the
handful of individuals who carried the correct rare genetic template
that would allow them to bond with cybernetic Spaceknight armor.
Unlike their predecessors, this new generation did not have to
surrender their humanity totally, thanks to technological advancements
that made the armor removable rather than needing to be surgically
grafted to the wearer. Possessing the genetic template did not
guarantee an individual the right to become a Spaceknight. Candidates
first had to prove themselves, training at the Academy of Spaceknights
in the city of Galadoria, spending as much as a year perfecting
survival skills before they were even let near a suit of training
armor. Most did not pass the course. Rand was one of those who did..
(Spaceknights#2) - as was his girlfriend,
Anarra. Both were appointed to the Spaceknights.
(Spaceknights#2 (fb) - BTS) - Rand was given armor modeled off
the second generation Spaceknight Lightningbolt, and assigned to act as
fellow Spaceknight Liberator (Prince Tristan)'s wingman.
(Spaceknights#2)
- The people of a nearby world, Trion, were rioting in the false belief
Spaceknights had attacked them. With the Spaceknights about to be sent
in to keep the peace, Rand and Anarra were
assigned to the same squad, consisting mostly of newly christened
Spaceknights like themselves, a close knit group that knew each other
well from their Academy days. Only Terminator (Tristan's brother, Balin)
and Sentry were experienced hands. For
everyone else, the assault on Trion was their first mission, but Rand
spoke so confidently that his friend Bron (Hammerhand) said he sounded
like he planned to take out the entire enemy force on his own, to which
Rand cockily responded that he'd leave a few for Bron, and "a couple for
my darling Anarra." The squad found a mob of hostile Trions waiting for
them, but Terminator disrupted their charge with hovering blasters, then
ordered Starshine and the others to contain, disarm and restrain the
enemy.Despite being vastly outnumbered, the Galadorians' superior
technology gave them the edge, and once the battle ended with the
Spaceknights victorious and the Trion forces surrendered,
Lightningbolt's declared that the fight had been great sport and
Starshine agreed.
Once the prisoners had been placed inside containment
fields, Terminator split the squad into patrols to try and locate their
true adversary, the one that had impersonated Spaceknights to turn Trion
and other worlds against Galador. As Liberator and Lightningbolt set off
Rand griped about their assignment being impossible, given that Trion's
landmasses were enormous and mostly wilderness, and Liberator concurred,
suggesting it was like looking for a needle in a haystack. This bizarre
phrase confused Rand, so Liberator clarified that it was an Earth saying
he'd heard from his Terran mother. Rand informed his friend that he was
starting to get used to his weirdness, only for Tristan to test that by
suddenly having a vision that he claimed told him where the enemy was,
specifically on the other side of a nearby mountain. Rand pointed out
that was outside their assigned search area, but Tristan insisted. Sure
enough, the pair found a long-range scanning unit set up where Tristan
had claimed, prompting Rand to ask him if he'd turned psychic. Examining
the device, Rand confirmed it was of Galadorian design, but made from an
unknown material. Unknown to both of them, Wraithknights (Dire Wraiths
with Spaceknight-design armor) snipers were observing the pair. One of
them took aim at Liberator, but he had a vision of the sniper which
triggered a sudden painful headache, causing him to bend double in pain,
inadvertently ducking out of the line of fire so that Rand took the shot
instead, a direct hit that went through his chest armor, killing him
instantly. Tristan returned fire, but the enemy remotely detonated their
scanner and teleported out.
Tristan brought Rand's body back to the
team's spaceship. Seeing her beloved dead, Anarra demanded to know which
of them was meant to be scanning the sector the shot came from, and
Tristan admitted it had been his, stating he had been temporarily
incapacitated. Hearing this, Anarra angrily asked if Rand had died
because he'd been daydreaming about his beloved Earth again. Stating
that Tristan had disobeyed a direct order (by going out of his search
sector) and now a knight was dead, Balin told his brother he would bring
him up on charges.

There is a Spaceknight that resembles
Lightningbolt in Annihilation#5 (specifically p1, pan3 and p2, pan5
& 6), but unless Rand somehow got resurrected (not impossible of
course) this was someone else; given we've seen Spaceknight mantles
passed down before - heck, Rand wasn't the first Lightningbolt - this
was probably a new recipient of the Lightningbolt armor. He's seen
again, as a headshot with slightly different coloring, in a single panel
towards the end of Annihilation#6.
I know some sites claim Lightningbolt is also
in Spaceknights#1, but there's no one in his armor visible, nor can I
see anyone unarmored who matches his appearance, though he is on the
cover.
