LADY SHADRA
Real Name: Presumably Shadra
Identity/Class: Terrestrial fauna (cat) mutate (New Men); see comments
Occupation: Knight
Group Membership: Knights of
Wundagore, New Men
Affiliations: High Evolutionary (Herbert Edgar Wyndham), Squire Gulo
Enemies: Man-Beast and
his evil New Men
Known Relatives: None
Aliases: None
Base of Operations: Unrevealed;
possibly Wundagore II (see
comments);
formerly the High Evolutionary's Citadel of Science,
Mount Wundagore, Transia
First Appearance: Wolverine: First Class#3 (July, 2008)
Powers/Abilities: A humanoid cat, Lady Shadra most likely had enhanced human strength, speed and agility, as well as a superhuman olfactory sense.
She likely had sharp teeth and claws, and she was shown to have a plantigrade stance, like a human, rather than a digitigrade stance like a cat (or like many non-hooved quadrupeds).
She wore body armor and wielded a sword, with which she was presumably highly skilled. She and Squire Gulo were able to hold off a greater number of larger New Men.
Se likely could ride an atomic steed.
History:
(Wolverine: First Class#3 (fb) - BTS) - Lady Shadra was evolved from a cat by the
High Evolutionary as one of
his New Men, and she became one of the Knights of Wundagore, defending
the Citadel of Science and the other New Men.
(Wolverine: First Class#3 (fb)) - When the Man-Beast led his band of New Men against the High Evolutionary with the intent of destroying all that he had built, all seemed lost until the flashing blades of Lady Shadra and Squire Gulo held the evil New Men at bay until Thor Odinson defeated the Man-Beast.
(Wolverine: First Class#3 (fb)
- BTS) - Lady Shadra and Squire
Gulo presumably departed Earth
alongside the High Evolutionary and the other Knights of Wundagore,
leaving Bova and a small village of New Men behind. There was a
prophecy that if the New Men looked to the sky and wished upon the
brightest star, one day the roar of their rockets would announce their
return.
(Wolverine: First Class#3 - BTS) -
The young New Man Prosimia told the favored tale of Lady
Shadra and Squire
Gulo to a group of young New Men. When Wolverine and Kitty Pryde flew
overhead in their Blackbird jet, causing a sonic boom, one of the
youths asked if that was Shadra and Gulo, and Prosimia told them that
if some of them had been naughty and disobeyed Bova, perhaps
Shadra and Gulo had come to teach them a lesson.
When Kitty and Wolverine entered
their village, Prosimia thought they were Shadra and Gulo, and he
excitedly cried out that the sagas had been fulfilled.
In an effort to fulfill the prophecy, Prosimia subsequently exposed Kitty to the High Evolutionary's genetic accelerator (or another piece of equipment, which transformed her into a cat-woman.
(Wolverine: First Class#4 -
BTS) - When the Man-Beast attacked Wundagore alongside a new batch of
New Men he had created, Prosimia convinced Kitty to don Lady Shadra's
armor and weaponry, take up her atomic steed and inspire the New Men
from the village to fight back against the Man-Beast's New Men.
Wolverine subsequently defeated and
drove off the Man-Beast, after
which the High Evolutionary returned Kitty to her normal form.

Paralleling the
stars of the story, Kitty Pryde and Wolverine, Lady Shadra and Squire
Gulo were a cat-woman and wolverine-man.
Gulo means wolverine, but I don't know any
connection between shadra and cat, other than Kitty Pryde was later
known as Shadowcat (at least in Reality-616).
The First Class comics have been
ruled out of Earth-616 continuity
by Tom Brevoort. That isn't to say specific events that occurred in the
First Class reality didn't also occur on Earth-616, but the rule of
thumb is only the events that were specifically referenced in a -616
story occurred on Earth-616. All other events occurring in the First
Class stories are assumed to not be on Earth-616. If something ever
confirms the
story's existence on Earth-616, I'll gladly adjust the profile
accordingly. Until then, Squire Gulo and Lady Shadra are Fringe
characters.
Honestly, being very familiar with the Knights of
Wundagore as I had reviewed and profiled the Knights as a group (for
the Appendix's 25th Anniversary event) and almost all of them as
individuals, this story really reads more like a Marvel Adventures or
other "all ages" story. I'm not aware of any actual village/town
society like what was seen in these two issues ever existing on
Earth-616, but it doesn't mean that there wasn't such a village at some
point.
--Thanks to Loki for providing the above text for
another profile, which I modified to fit this one, and to David
Zuckerman for reminding me where to find it.
Wolverine and
Kitty traveled to Mount Wundagore in an effort to determine the
location of Magneto, who had spent some time there around there when he
was younger. That would refer to his living with Magda in a location
close enough that she could flee there on foot to escape him.
That
whole continuity has been ret-conned a few times, as you can see in the
comments of the profile on Natalya
Maximoff.
Regardless of
whether this story was in-continuity or not, Lady
Shadra and Squire Gulo could have counterparts
that were involved in the Thor I#134-135
battle against the Man-Beast and his evil New Men. If so, they would
likely have departed Earth and traveled to Wundagore
II.

its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th
anniversary 's celebratory event.
