Powers/Abilities: Jungle Boy was extremely athletic and capable in a fight. He carried simple homemade weapons, including a knife, a hammer and a hatchet with stone heads. Jungle Boy had a strong affinity towards wild animals, especially small monkeys, who would obey his verbal commands.

History:
(Jungle Action I#1/3 (fb) - BTS) - Jack "Jackie" Spears was the son of Jack Spears Sr., a hunter active around the Congo. "Jackie" developed an affinity for wild animals and for living in the jungles, earning him the alias "Jungle Boy."

(Jungle Action I#1/3) - Jungle Boy came upon a man impersonating Kasuba, chief of the Kadubi tribe, who declared one of his tribe should be put to death for selling land to their rivals, the Waqui. Thinking this was a senseless act, Jungle Boy interfered with a number of small monkeys and demanded the impostor explain his actions but the impostor refused. The impostor then disappeared through a secret tunnel. When Jungle Boy returned to his father to tell him of the incident, he found the real Kasuba in a meeting with him. When Jungle Boy asked him about their earlier encounter, Kasuba was simply confused. Jungle Boy's father expressed his distaste for "Jackie" going around the jungle with wild animals and told him to stay out of the jungle, deeming it too dangerous for him.

    Confused that his father seemed to be allied with a murderer, Jungle Boy went back to the jungle to solve the problem. His monkey allies found the entrance to the impostor's secret tunnel and inside the tunnel, they were menaced by a giant spider but the monkeys held it down by its legs and Jungle Boy killed it with his stone hatchet. Beyond the spider, he found an underground river full of skulls. The Kasuba impostor appeared, revealing that he was allied with the gold hunter Borelli. Jungle Boy and his monkeys fought Borelli and the impostor and were aided by the arrival of "Jackie"'s father and the real Kasuba, who unmasked his impostor. "Jackie"'s father killed Borelli and Kasuba knocked his impostor into the river of skulls, cracking his head. Both villains were left dead in the river. When Jungle Boy conferred with his father, he learned that Kasuba had originally come to him to ask for help against the impostor.

(Jungle Action I#2/2) - A giant bat captured Jungle Boy and brought him to Kula Mountain, where he fought a caveman-like being who had taken a number of Africans prisoner. Jungle Boy dodged the caveman's attack and the caveman fell from Kula Mountain. Jungle Boy dodged further attacks from a warthog and a leopard as he tried to descend the mountain. He was suddenly ambushed by an animal trainer, who revealed that he was the master of the giant bat and intended to conquer the jungle and eliminate all the Africans by driving animals berserk with a serum he had created. The animal trainer intended to make the animals fight for the Communist cause. Jungle Boy suddenly rolled a boulder at the animal trainer and pinned his foot. The giant bat, thinking its master was dead, picked him up and carried him off to the Valley of Skeletons, leaving him for dead. Jungle Boy liberated the Africans who had been confined by the caveman then descended Kula Mountain.

(Jungle Action I#3/4) - Jungle Boy and his monkeys defended a bird's nest from the great snake Serpo, knocking the snake's head against the ground to stun it. As Jungle Boy returned to his father, he saw Chief Dabawaba struck down by a gunshot. Jungle Boy went in pursuit of the shooter but the gunman clubbed "Jackie" over the head with his gun before Jungle Boy could see him. When he regained consciousness, "Jackie" found he'd grabbed a button from the gunman's coat. Jack Sears, Sr. summoned Dr. Aram to tend to the wounded chief and went to personally summon the army to prevent a revolt by Dabawaba's tribe. When Dr. Aram arrived, "Jackie"'s monkey friends were irritated by the doctor's presence. Recognizing Dr. Aram was missing a button from his coat, "Jackie" realized Dr. Aram was a Communist agent who wanted to incite a revolt by killing Chief Dabawaba. Jungle Boy's monkey friends confined Dr. Aram but the Communist asserted that the revolt had already started. Finding Dabawaba's tribe about to go to war over the assault on Chief Dabawaba, Jungle Boy warned them that they had been tricked by Communists. Having survived his injury, Chief Dabawaba confirmed Jungle Boy's story to his people and identified the Communists as their enemies. Reunited with his father, "Jackie" learned his father hadn't summoned the army after all, believing the problem would solve itself. He remained ignorant of his son's role in stopping the revolt.

(Jungle Action I#4/2) - Jack Sears, Sr. was trying to hunt an elephant while, unknown to him, a gorilla was stalking him. Jungle Boy saved his father from the gorilla and his father shot both animals. Although his father was proud of him, he asked Jungle Boy to avoid dangers. Mr. Sears had been hired as a guide to Mr. Smith, a meek man who claimed to be studying jungle plants in the Baguna territory and Jungle Boy accompanied them. When Mr. Smith was bothered by the local monkeys and wanted to shoot them, Jungle Boy remarked that the monkeys were friendly and had helped him many times. That night when they camped, Jungle Boy awoke to find Mr. Smith had taken his father's rifle and was about to shoot him. Jungle Boy tried to intervene but Mr. Smith declared that he would shoot both of them instead. "Smith" turned out to be Serge Rubochov, a Soviet mass-murderer who had come to Africa to find a hiding place. Discovering Mr. Spears didn't keep his rifle loaded, "Smith" drew a grenade and hurled it at them but a monkey interceded and caught the grenade. A team of monkeys then hurled the grenade about until it detonated next to "Smith," killing him. Jungle Boy admitted he'd been suspicious ever since the supposedly meek "Smith" had wanted to kill the monkeys.

(Jungle Action I#5/2) - When his father saw a water buffalo near Jungle Boy, he shot and killed it. Jungle Boy was upset by this, noting that the water buffalo's death would drive away the Africans who had been working for his father but his father chided Jungle Boy, reminding him he was just a boy and not a man. Just then, a lion stepped out and his father was about to shoot it but Jungle Boy told him to keep back. Jungle Boy struck the lion in the face with his hammer, stunning it. Jungle Boy then brought meat to the lion, which had been merely hungry, not vicious.

    Jungle Boy went to the local village to repair the damage his father had done but found it had been completely relocated due to the death of the water buffalo. A snake tried to attack Jungle Boy as he studied the surroundings but he easily slew it. Just then, Kagogo confronted him wearing a water buffalo head as a mask. Kagogo, whom Jungle Boy knew to be a Communist agent, had claimed to be the god of the water buffalo and ordered the tribe to follow his orders. Kagogo had his men escort Jungle Boy to a pool where water buffalo were drinking, intending to throw Jungle Boy to be killed by them, but the lion whom Jungle Boy had fed earlier came upon the scene to defend Jungle Boy. Kagogo fled in terror from the lion but Jungle Boy caught him then swung with him on a vine above the water buffalo, threatening to throw Kagogo to them. Kagogo begged for mercy and Jungle Boy brought him back to land, removing his mask. The duped locals wanted to punish Kagogo but Jungle Boy promised he would bring him to the proper authorities. The locals wondered if Jungle Boy were a lion god but he explained the lion was simply fond of him because he had fed it. Jungle Boy brought the missing villagers and the captive Kagogo back to his father and asked him whether he was still merely a "boy" in his eyes.

(Jungle Action I#6/2) - Jungle Boy and his father helped round up animals to be shipped to a zoo for Mr. Haskel. Neither of them liked the idea of sending animals into a zoo but were at least happy the animals would be well-treated. However, Haskel's subordinate Carney attempted to poison the animals so they would go mad, hoping he would ruin Haskel's reputation and assume control of his expedition. Jungle Boy caught Carney and forced a confession from him then turned him over to the law.

Jack Spears Sr. was the father of "Jackie" Spears. Jack was an excellent hunter who was often hired as a guide in the jungles around the Congo. Jack strongly disapproved of his son's adventures as Jungle Boy, believing the jungles were too dangerous for his son, but inevitably, he would often need his son's aid against the many villainous characters they encountered.

Jack carried a hunting rifle.
