Powers/Abilities: Johnston was a trained and experienced police officer, although not very good at his job. A large part of this shortcoming was lack of effort, but he may also have been incompetent, having earned his sergeant's stripes through brown-nosing rather than achievements.

History:
(Bodyguard#1) - Sgt. Johnston was a police sergeant in the Sydney Police Force, but was also a lech and slacker. One nigh Johnston was assigned stakeout duty outside the gym after a tip off informed the cops that some gangsters intended to target a boxer when he finished his regular training session at 10 p.m., so that he couldn't fight in an upcoming match. Johnston was partnered up with Constable Christine Fox, who wasn't particularly happy being made to disguise herself as a scantily-dressed hooker, especially on a freezing cold night. When she whinged about this Johnston condescendingly told her to "be a good little constable and do as you're told" or else he'd put her on report. Then Johnston groped her rear, going so far as to slide his hand up under her skirt, and offered to help her "lend authenticity to her part and warm" her up. When Fox angrily told Johnston to move his hand or else, he strolled away, declaring he'd have to warm himself up at the pub. As he walked off, he called back to her to keep an eye on the gym in his absence, noting that since the tip said 10p.m. he'd be back around quarter to, and "try not to get raped until I get back."

(Bodyguard#1 - BTS) - While Johnston was slacking off drinking, the gangsters arrived early (at 9.30) and Fox ended up fighting them alongside the boxer, Clarry Wright. Knocked out during the scuffle, the unconscious Fox was taken in for the night by Wright. However, the next day Johnston covered up his dereliction of duty by writing a report claiming Fox had deserted the stakeout and been insubordinate.

(Bodyguard#1) - Johnston watched as his captain berated Fox for her failings as listed in Johnston's dishonest report, and demanded to know what she had to say for herself. When she didn't immediately respond Johnston smirked and added "Well, constable?" Enraged, Fox told the pair of them that they could take the report, and the whole police force, and stick it. As she said this, she punched Johnston out cold and stormed off, quitting the force.

   The strip Bodyguard was originally published in Australian Penthouse in five page installments, before being reprinted gathered into comics by Aircel, an imprint of Malibu. The Malibu reprints were in black and white, but the original version was in color. As you might be able to guess given the original publication, the strip featured a fair bit of sex and nudity, so if that offends then don't go hunting down copies to read. There were other, potentially more interesting characters than Johnston that I could have covered, but all of them would have resulted in more risque profiles.

   Bodyguard followed Fox and Wright as they teamed up to be professional bodyguards after Fox quit the police. One of Bodyguard's creators, David de Vries, also co-created the Australian superhero team the Southern Squadron for Cyclone Comics, which was also reprinted for the American market by Aircel. Aircel's Bodyguard#2 included two stories not previously published in Penthouse, Easter Bunny and Beaver State, the latter of which had Fox and Wright meet the Squadron, confirming them part of the Cyclone Comics universe.

   This profile was completed on 08/11/2026, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th anniversary's celebratory event to represent Bodyguard.
