Powers/Abilities: Edmund Honda is a champion sumo wrestler. He has various signature moves, such as a flying head butt and a thumping fall. He very quick with his hands, easily swatting away attempted blows and he slaps opponents repeatedly. Honda has mastery over his bulky body, being able to control its momentum and speed. He is good-natured and a teacher in (modified) sumo wrestling to many, mentoring fighters to international championship levels. He is (at least) bilingual in Japanese and fluent English.

History:

(Street Fighter#3 (fb) - BTS) - Edmund Honda was a teacher and trainer to those wishing to compete in Street Fighter championships. Along the way, he made friendships with champions like Ken and Blanka. However, the villainous M. Bison had Ken secretly killed. Although saddened, Honda continued with his mission to train potential Street Fighters. Like others within the Japanese fighting community, he was aware of American costumed fighters, including the heroic Ferret (Cal Denton). Honda flew to Los Angeles to continue training.

(Street Fighter#3) - By chance, Denton was on the same flight and seated next to Honda, feeling squeezed against the wrestler's bulk. Denton grabbed Honda's newspaper and was disappointed to read of Ken's apparent death and then his body's disappearance. Denton talked big that he "knew" the Ferret, but Honda was wise to Denton's charade and invited him with a business card. The next day, Honda waited in his seemingly rundown training dojo with American sumo students seated, and Denton (disguised as Ferret) arrived. Honda cheerfully and easily engaged the reckless brawler Ferret, swatting away his attempted strikes. Honda struck Ferret's foot and taught him other signature moves that Ferret had trouble countering. But Ferret mounted Honda's shoulders to the sumo's embarrassment, and he replied with a flying head butt that crushed Ferret momentarily against a wall. Honda continued demonstrating his moves and Ferret was soundly defeated. Honda was good natured, seeking to find worthy candidates to help him hunt down those who had killed his friend.

More information on the arcade game's character, his development and history can be found on his Wikipedia page. Interestingly, creator Yasuda was initially looking for a reaction using stereotypes with this character. Apparently in Street Fighter lore, his first name is spelled Edmond, not Edmund like in this Malibu comic.

I liked that they slotted this title into Malibu's Genesis Universe (although that was soon obliterated in Protectors#20 (1994)).

This Street Fighter adaptation by Malibu was not well received by game developer Capcom at the time and the series was canceled after just 3 issues. Unsurprisingly, Malibu seemed disappointed with this decision and in the final issue, after an epilogue hinting at character developments, the address of Capcom was provided (with no instructions from the column writer on what fans should do, but it was implied that they should ask continuation of the series). As for Ken's apparent death, it was revealed in the epilogue that Bison was creating evil clones of the main Street Fighters, so was the real Ken killed or maybe the original cloned? There might still be a script out there, but the writer Len Strazewski sadly passed away in April 2026.
