History:
(
Marvel Frontier Comics Unlimited#1/5 (fb) - BTS) - Emily Hearst was married and had two children, Lisa and Theodore.

She was devoutly religious and saw her psi-powered children as the Devil's offspring.

After her husband left, Emily tried to exorcise the evil from her children, forcing them to memorize and recite whole chapters from the Bible and slapping their hands with rulers if they made mistakes. She forbade the use of their powers and had whipped Lisa once in the past.

(Marvel Frontier Comics Unlimited#1/5 (fb)) - When Emily discovered Lisa using her powers while playing with Theodore, she brought them both to the tower. hearst-emily-evileye-choke

When Emily prepared to whip Theodore, Lisa was unwilling to let this happen, and she lashed out with her telekinetic powers, knocking her mother across the room. However, Lisa had exhausted her powers in the effort, and when her mother began to choke the life from her, proclaiming "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live!", Theodore unconsciously unleashed his own power, firing an energy beam through Emily's forehead and into her brain, killing her.

(Marvel Frontier Comics Unlimited#1/5 (fb) - BTS) - Lisa presumably either levitated herself and Theodore out the window and then returned to their own rooms, or they left through the door, but Lisa then telekinetically locked the door from the inside. Regardless of the method, the door remained locked from the inside.

(Marvel Frontier Comics Unlimited#1/5 (fb) - BTS) - The investigating police officer, Tom, found Emily's body in a room with the door still locked from the inside and within a tower with an open window that could not be scaled without specialized equipment or abilities.

Considering the matter to have some black magic tie-in, perhaps some kind of ritualistic thing, Tom summoned his associate Mike Hellman, a psychic of some renown and with a reputation with the "gutter press."

(Marvel Frontier Comics Unlimited#1/5 (fb)) - Tom showed Hellman the crime scene and expressed his concerns.

(Marvel Frontier Comics Unlimited#1/5 (fb) - BTS) - Hellman met with Charlotte (Emily's sister, into whose custody Lisa and Theodore were presumably placed) and Lisa and Theodore. Hellman sensed no loss or grief from either of the kids, although he felt a terrible weight of guilt from Lisa.

Hoping to catch any psychic residue, Hellman spent the night in the tower-room, and he received a power psychic vision of Emily's death from Lisa's nightmares. Rushing to Lisa's room, he found her levitating far above her bed. Realizing that Lisa could have levitated up into the tower-room from her locked bedroom, Hellman confronted her the next morning.

Lisa revealed how her mother had tried to exorcise the demons from her children after learning of their powers, even resorting to physical abuse. Fearing for his sister's life, Theodore had unleashed the power he didn't even know he had, firing an energy blast from his forehead through his mother's skull.

Lisa had brought Theodore out of the trance into which he had fallen, but as she was telling the story to Hellman, Theodore unwittingly used his powers again in a virtual reality game. Theodore slew his friend, Bob, and then Theodore's mind apparently became lost in the virtual reality game.

(Marvel Frontier Comics Unlimited#1/5 (fb) - BTS) - The murder of Emily Hearst was left officially unsolved, and Hellman's involvement was kept secret.

(Marvel Frontier Comics Unlimited#1/5 (fb) - BTS) - Bob's parents sued Virtual Reality Inc. for causing the death their son through gross negligence.

(Marvel Frontier Comics Unlimited#1/5) - Hellman detailed the Hearst's story in private.

Comments: Created by David Hine under the Marvel Frontier Comics imprint, an edgier sub-division of Marvel UK.

This story was listed as "The Locked Room: An 'Evil Eye' prologue." However, this was the last comic published in the Frontier Comics line, and so any further story remains untold.

I don't think it was revealed whether Emily was divorced or just separated.

Emily Hearst previously had a sub-profile under Mike Hellman, originally published 09/02/2006.

This profile was completed 12/19/2025, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th anniversary 's celebratory event.
