History:
(Exploits of
Spider-Man#1/2 (fb)) - In 1982 a lot of people were bitten, stabbed,
injected or splashed by radioactive, gamma and cosmic rays, and so
were born the Fantastic 400, the world's largest and happiest super
group.
(Fantastic Four#2/2) - Frost
Bite was a superhero composed of snow, who looked like a snowman
come to life, complete with a carrot for a nose.
(Mighty Thor#2/2) - He was
from Bournemouth.
(Fantastic Four#16/2) - Frost Bite was considered the weakest member of the world's largest superhero team, the Fantastic 400.
(Fantastic Four#2/2) - The members of the Fantastic 400 introduced themselves individually. During the second week of these introductions they reached Frost Bite's turn to do so.
(Fantastic Four#3/2) - Lined up single file, the Fantastic 400 prepared for battle, with each member passing the instruction on from the member in front of them to the member behind, in Frost Bite's case hearing the instruction "Attack. Pass it on." from Viking King and passing this back to Cyborg Cid.
(Fantastic Four#5/2) - As the voluptuous new team member Damsel in Distress introduced herself to her teammates the men all ogled and drooled. Overheating, Frost Bite went one step further, and melted.
(Fantastic
Four#7/2) - Hearing a bloodcurdling shriek Frost Bite declared
"Sufferin' snowflakes! That awful scream." Other members of the
Fantastic 400 speculated as to the cause, until Man Ant revealed it
wasn't a precursor to battle, merely a wail of despair from the artist,
who had just learned they team was going to be teaming up with the
Avengers and Justice League of America next week.
(Fantastic Four#16/2) - When violent
criminal Ned Smaile had the cops pinned down, shooting at them from an
upper story window with a machine-gun, Frost Bite rushed into the
building hoping to prove he wasn't the weakest member of the Fantastic
400. Unable to be harmed by bullets he climbed in through the window
and punched the villain on the nose, seized the man's weapon and threw
it down to the police. However the crook immediately found himself a
new weapon - the unfortunate Frost Bite's snow body - and started
pelting the constabulary with snowballs instead.
(Fantastic Four#17/2) - With the rest of
the team on their night off, Frost Bite was sitting by the phone in
the Fantastic 400's skyscraper HQ one evening when an urgent call came
in from the police commissioner, asking for his help with a job only
he could handle. Pleased that the police wanted him, the weakest of
the team, Frost Bite hastily flew over to the police station on his
flying sled, only to discover that the commissioner wanted him because
their fridge was bust and they needed a way to cool their beer.
(Fantastic Four#18/2) - Because the recession the team could only afford a single sky jet, so when called out on a mission most of the team had to hang on for dear life to the outside, including Frost Bite, clinging to the jets at the tail end, the starting point of a giant daisy chain of members clinging to one another's legs as they trailed behind the vehicle.
(Fantastic Four#20/2) - Frost Bite joined
Aqua-Lung in evaluating auditions for new team members. They watched
with concern as Hand Grenade exploded his right hand, then
consternation as two workmen carried a gigantic flashlight on to the
stage and just left it there. Confused, Aqua-Lung asked Frost Bite if
he knew what was going on, but Frost Bite was equally clueless. Then
the flashlight unexpectedly spoke, asking them if they'd not heard of
the Human Torch.
(Fantastic
Four#26/2) - While having a drink in Joe's Bar Frost Bite was unaware
that two other patrons were discussing him and how he was the weakest
member of the Fantastic 400. Watching as Frost Bite went over to play
the bar's slot machine, one drinker added that he'd heard Frost Bite
was the weakest being in the universe, with the weakest arms, weakest
legs, weakest body, indeed weakest everything. The other drinker was
doubtful, insisting that nobody could be that weak, but the first one
insisted it was the case, and pointed out that Frost Bite was now on
his knees begging for mercy, having lost his wrestling match with the
one-armed bandit.
(Mighty Thor#2/2) - The members of the
Fantastic 400 discussed their homeworlds, each revealing that they
came from various alternate Earths with increasingly exotic codenames.
The Tall Man asked Frost Bite where he originated, and he responded
that he came from Earth. The others recoiled with incredulity that he
came from plain old Earth, no numbers, letters or other descriptors,
and a sheepish Frost Bite admitted that more specifically he came from
Bournemouth (see comments). Hearing this the others pointed in
unison and declared him a weirdo, leaving Frost Bite hanging his head
in shame.
(Mighty Thor#3/2) - Entering the Fantastic
400 rest room Frost Bite greeted his fellow heroes hanging out there,
but to his annoyance not one of them acknowledged him. After repeating
himself more loudly and forcibly with still no response, Frost Bite
angrily declared they were all jerks and he'd had it with them and
being ignored just because he was the weakest, so he was quitting. As
he stormed off his parting words began to register with Aqua-Lung, who
asked the others if he'd heard it correctly. They admitted they'd not
been listening, but the Blocker noted that they couldn't let Frost
Bite leave. Aqua-Lung, Cos-Mik, Super Ape and Tall Man raced after
Frost Bite and begged him to stay, so Frost Bite, feeling his
self-worth renewed, accepted, adding he never knew they needed him so
much. Aqua-Lung corrected him, stating that wasn't the reason; it
would just be a huge bother changing their 400 logo on their costumes
to 399.
(Mighty Thor#10/2) - Frost Bite raced to
Fantastic 400 HQ in response to the emergency signal being activated,
finding the others already present. Aqua-Lung explained that Senator
Dyrich had called a special meeting on instructions from the
President, who was disappointed with how they handled the Boston Tea
Party (i.e. they weren't there) and felt they would be more efficient
fighting force if their membership was pared down to a more reasonable
figure - to whit, three members. When asked how the three would be
chosen, Dyrich stated that only the strongest would remain, and to
begin whittling the numbers down instructed all those who could leap
tall buildings in a single bound to stand on one side of the room. The
skyscraper titled dangerously to one side since only Frost Bite failed
to move. With him eliminated and off the team, Dyrich confidently
declared they only had 396 more to go.
(Exploits of Spider-Man#1/2 (fb)) - When
the 1990s dawned the recession hit and El Dorado started on
television, changing the previously happy Fantastic 400 into the
Dark Fantastic 400. Frost Bite was among those overtaken by this
new grim phase. They fought in the Eternity Crossover Crisis War,
and in 1992 they were all killed to keep up the death quota for a
comic strip of the gritty 1990s.
(Exploits of Spider-Man#2/2 - BTS) - Luckily they all soon fully recovered.
(Exploits of
Spider-Man#17/2 - BTS) - But there were lasting repercussions,
changes to the timeline, such as Frost Bite now coming from
Clacton instead of Bournemouth, and other events being wiped from
history (see comments).
(Exploits of Spider-Man#4/2) - Frost Bite accompanied Aqua-Lung and another unidentified team member to Liverpool to appear alongside TV presenters Richard and Judy on the program This Morning. While there they and new member Lightning Bolt cornered their deadly enemy Doc Fear atop local landmark the Liver Building. Frost Bite watched as the undentified team member used a loudspeaker to order Doc Fear to surrender and throw down his weapon, and watched in shock as said weapon, a tank, landed on the unidentified member's head, squishing him.
(Exploits of Spider-Man#15/2) - While having a drink in a bar Frost Bite was unaware that two other patrons were discussing him and how he was the weakest member of the Fantastic 400. Watching as Frost Bite went over to play the bar's slot machine, one drinker added that he'd heard Frost Bite was the weakest being in the universe, with the weakest arms, weakest legs, weakest body, indeed weakest everything. The other drinker was doubtful, insisting that nobody could be that weak, but the first one insisted it was the case, and pointed out that Frost Bite was now on his knees begging for mercy, having lost his wrestling match with the one-armed bandit.
(Exploits of Spider-Man#17/2) - The members of the Fantastic 400 discussed their homeworlds,
each revealing that they came from various alternate Earths with
increasingly exotic codenames. Jet Lagg asked Frost Bite where he
originated, and he responded that he came from Earth. The others
recoiled with incredulity that he came from plain old Earth, no
numbers, letters or other descriptors, and a sheepish Frost Bite
admitted that more specifically he came from Clacton (see comments).
Hearing this the others pointed in unison and declared him a weirdo,
leaving Frost Bite hanging his head in shame.
(Exploits of Spider-Man#19/2) - In
Chelmsford violent criminal Hot Metal Melvin had the cops pinned
down, shooting at them from an upper story window with a
machine-gun, Frost Bite rushed into the building hoping to prove
he wasn't the weakest member of the Fantastic 400. Unable to be
harmed by bullets he climbed in through the window and punched the
villain on the nose, seized the man's weapon and threw it down to
the police. However the crook immediately found himself a new
weapon - the unfortunate Frost Bite's snow body - and started
pelting the constabulary with snowballs instead.
(Exploits of Spider-Man#22/2) - Entering the Fantastic 400 rest room Frost Bite greeted his fellow heroes hanging out there, but to his annoyance not one of them acknowledged him. After repeating himself more loudly and forcibly with still no response, Frost Bite angrily declared they were all jerks and he'd had it with them and being ignored just because he was the weakest, so he was quitting. Aqua-Lung corrected him, stating that wasn't the reason; it would just be a huge bother changing their 400 logo on their costumes and headed notepaper to 399.
Comments: Created by Tim Quinn and Dicky Howett.
The strip never reveals Frost Bite's origins,
so he could be a transformed human (mutant or mutate) but he might also
be a literal snowman somehow brought to life.
There are several other Fantastic 400 strips,
and Frost Bite might well be considered off-panel in any that include
mass team gatherings, but for ease I'm only listing the ones where he
appears on panel (or at least gets mentioned).
For the non-Brits, Frost Bite's hometown of
Bournemouth is a very normal, very mundane and unexciting seaside town
in the south of England. Clacton is considered even less interesting,
and with a sillier sounding name. And for those who are not Brits or not
old enough to remember the 1990s, El Dorado was a dire and thankfully
relatively short-lived British soap opera set in a holiday resort in
Spain.
The Golden Age Frost Bite of Earth-Beta shows up in Mighty Thor#19/2 - or perhaps, as Mighty Thor and the X-Men#20/2 claims they are the villainous Golden Age Fantastic 400 of Earth-Alpha - the strip contradicts itself. Either way, the regular Frost Bite doesn't show up, so it doesn't impact the history above, but I'm mentioning it for completeness.
The Fantastic 400 rested for several years
after its run in Mighty Thor, eventually returning in full color in
Exploits of Spider-Man. Although fully redrawn, some scripts for this
new run were recycled from the original run, hence why Frost Bite's
unsuccessful battle with a one-armed bandit is listed twice. In theory
it might not be the same story retold; it's entirely possible he lost
two times to two different machines in two different pubs. Similarly, he
had two almost identical encounters where a gunman used him to make
snowballs; perhaps Hot Metal Melvin is merely an alias of Ned Smaile,
and this is just two tellings of the same event? Slightly harder to
reconcile is Frost Bite twice getting into a conversation about where he
comes from, the first time claiming he comes from Bournemouth, the
second time Clacton. In the real world this would probably be because
Tim Quinn either wasn't too fussed about contradicting established
continuity in a humor strip, and perhaps thought Clacton was funnier
than Bournemouth, but in universe I guess the Eternity Crossover Crisis
War could have changed some things, the way these Crisis events tend to
do.
