History:
(Adam: Legend of the Blue Marvel I#3 (fb) - BTS) - Marlene Frazier was born and raised in Westpoint, Mississippi. She became an agent of U.S. intelligence operations.
(Adam: Legend of the Blue Marvel I#3 (fb)) - In November, 1962, Marlene was summoned to the Pentagon by Kreutz, a representative of the joint chiefs of staff. Kreutz asked her how she felt about "coloreds." She said she hadn't thought about it; Kreutz insisted that Black people were "different" and wanted to use her against Adam Brashear, the super-hero called the Blue Marvel, who had just been forced to retire through an executive order issued by President Kennedy. Kreutz checked to see if Marlene was single because he wanted her to seduce him as part of a surveillance operation.
To prepare for the mission, Marlene read up on Black philosophy, reading the works of Booker T. Washington, Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison and Frantz Fanon. She also saw Muhammad Ali on television.
One day, Marlene moved into Adam's Georgetown neighborhood, adopting the alias "Candace." She drew Adam's attention by feigning that her car had stalled and she needed help. Adam helped her and soon they began dating. Marlene lied about her past, claiming she was orphaned; Marlene had to cut off contact with her own parents to maintain the facade. One night she picked a restaurant that had a "whites only" sign on its window and began to find her eyes opened to the injustices Adam had to live with. They continued to draw closer together and Marlene realized the assignment was wrong.
Returning to the Pentagon, Marlene told Kreutz Adam wasn't a threat, but he told her to continue the mission. One day while Marlene was walking with Adam, he accidentally brushed elbows with a white man who flew into in a rage against him. A crowd began hurling insults at Adam and "Candace," denouncing her for being with a Black man. Realizing that with his power Adam could have crushed them all, yet restrained himself, Candace fell truly in love with him. After 18 months, Candace stopped receiving contact from Kreutz and never contacted him again. She assumed that either the operation had been mothballed or the government had decided Adam wasn't a threat. Candace married Adam.
(Adam: Legend of the Blue Marvel I#4 (fb)) - Adam and Candace raised a family together, including sons Max and Kevin and daughter Adrienne. They were close to Adam's friend Conner Sims and celebrated their families' birthdays together.
(Mighty Avengers II#11 (fb)) - In November, 1970, Candace found Adam listening to the radio about a recent murder. Noting that Kevin was asleep, Candace suggested they could enjoy the evening together but Adam was soon summoned out to assist in the murder Adam had just heard about.
(Mighty Avengers II#9 (fb)) - In 1991, Candace and Adam celebrated their son Kevin's university graduation.
(Adam: Legend of the Blue Marvel I#2) - One day in recent years, Candace was approached by S.H.I.E.L.D. director Tony Stark, who had come looking for her husband as he needed her help. When Tony called her "Ms. Frazier," she realized he knew her true identity. Tony informed her the world needed the Blue Marvel and asked her to give him his business card. Once Tony left, Candace telephoned Adam and warned him the government was looking for him.
(Adam: Legend of the Blue Marvel I#3) - Marlene confessed everything about her assignment to Adam but said she truly loved him and didn't regret marrying him. Adam asked what her real name was, so she told him. "I think I would've liked Marlene," Adam replied as he flew away.
(Adam: Legend of the Blue Marvel I#5) - As members of the Fantastic Four and the Avengers prepared to battle the Anti-Man (the transformed Conner Sims), Marlene went to the Baxter Building, trying to find Adam. She found he'd been wounded battling the Sentry and was recovering in a stasis chamber. Marlene blamed herself for the injuries Adam had suffered. Adam revived to learn from Marlene that the Avengers and Fantastic Four had left to fight the Anti-Man. Marlene judged that Adam wasn't angry at her but was angry at himself for having obeyed President Kennedy's executive order for all those years. Adam admitted he wasn't mad at her and she observed that now he could use his powers to help others, which was all that mattered, then hoped they could go away somewhere together after the fighting was done. Adam promised and went into battle with the Anti-Man. Marlene watched as Adam, the Avengers and the Fantastic Four fought the Anti-Man. When Adam was knocked down she ran forward to help him but the Anti-Man fired a blast of anti-matter at Marlene that fatally burned her. Dying, Marlene told Adam not to feel bad about what happened to her but to use his power to show people who he really was. Saying she'd see him again, Marlene died. After defeating the Anti-Man, Adam and his family heled Marlene's funeral and buried her. In their home, Adam discovered a note Marlene left for him attached to a package with a new Blue Marvel costume for him to wear.

Marlene is shown in a flashback in Adam: Legend of the Blue Marvel I#3 reacting to Muhammad Ali saying "No Viet Cong ever called me a n-." Ali apparently only ever expressed he had no quarrel with the Viet Cong, not the latter part of the phrase - but more to the point, Ali said that in 1966, while Marlene's flashback was supposed to be set in 1962.
