evans-andy-hf-wreckHistory:

(Human Fly I#7 (fb) - BTS) - Andy lost his sight in the same automobile collision that slew his mother.

Andy closely bonded with Frost, a seeing eye dog who became his best friend.

Andy's father, Mal, was a mechanic, fixing and renting snowmobiles for more wealthy people in the skiing season and working in a mill, producing "authentic Colonial" furniture for the summer trade.

Hearing about a doctor in New York would could restore vision in some cases to people who were born sighted and lost their vision following trauma, etc.

Mal resented the wealthy, who were out having fun while he was working hard to pay for surgery for Andy and who paid money for stunt shows, etc. when such money could pay for his son's surgery.

(Human Fly I#7 (fb)) - Mal brought Andy and Evan to the Vermont Green Mountain Winter Festival (presumably in Hunter Park, Manchester, Vermont), where he worked on snowmobiles.

Frost helped guide Andy around the festival.

(Human Fly I#7) - After Frost guided Andy to the tool shed where his father was working, Mal hugged his son and then invited Andy to come for a snowmobile ride with him. Andy asked if Frost could attend, but his dad told him that Frost would not be able to keep up; however, he assured Andy that they wouldn't be gone long and that Frost would be alright tied to his shed.

As they took the north slope, Andy heard crowds cheering for the stunt man known as the Human Fly, but when Andy asked, Mal told him it was just part of the festival, not wanting to disappoint Andy with what he couldn't see. As they headed downhill, Andy told his dad that he wished he could see what Frost looked like, and his dad assured him that he would someday, as he was working hard to pay for a surgery that could restore his sight.

Suddenly spotting a bear, Mal turned to dodge it, and he crashed into a tree, knocking himself out. Andy was unharmed, but he initially did not appreciate the bear's presence as it approached him. evans-andy-hf-flare-bear

Having observed the crash during his own stunt, the Human Fly subsequently rushed down the hill to help and had his crew -- Arnie Berman, Blaze Kendall, & Ted Locke -- follow him. While Arnie called the state police, Blaze and Ted got a snow mobile from Mal's shed, they saw the trail, and they let Frost off his leash and then followed him.

Meanwhile, as the Human Fly approached the crash site, Andy heard the bear growl and realized that something was coming closer to him. The Human Fly jumped on the bear's back, but it swiftly flipped him over its back and began to crush him in its grip/under its weight.

Realizing that someone was trying to keep a bear away from him, Andy located the snow mobile's rescue flare, after which Frost arrived and jumped on the bear's back. As they bear stood up, letting go of the Human Fly, Frost's barking and the bear's growls allowed Andy to localize the bear and to fire the flare into its chest. The impact and heat caused the bear to flee.

Andy asked if they had done alright, and the Human Fly told him that he and Frost had not only saved themselves but also his dad and him (the Human Fly). Andy was speechless when the Human Fly introduced himself.

As Mal revived and asked about his son, Ted told him that he was doing fine and not having trouble adjusting to the fact that he was a hero. The Human Fly told Mal that he thought that some of the money he had raised for the festival could be used to pay for Andy's surgery.

As Mal was taken away in the snowmobile, the Human Fly asked if Frost could lead them home, and Andy replied, "You bet, Mr. Fly."

Comments: Created by Bill Mantlo and Lee Elias.

It is unrevealed whether Mal was driving or otherwise in the vehicle when the crash occurred that blinded Andy and killed his mother.

Andy looked like he might be 6-10 years old at the time of the story, which was nearly 50 years ago (at the time of this profile's publication). With Marvel Time roughly equating to 1 year for every 5 years of real time, that might make Andy 16-20 years old. It would be nice to see him again, even in a minor appearance.

Andy previously had a sub-profile in the Human Fly profile, originally published 01/01/2016.

Frost and Mal Evans deserve their own profiles, too. Maybe I'll circle back to them in the not-so-distant future.

This profile was completed 11/08/2025, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th anniversary's celebratory event.
