enche-dogu-vampire-facenobeardDOGU ENCHE

Real Name: Dogu Enche

Identity/Class: Human vampire;
the date of activity is unrevealed; it could be as recent as 1974, but it could also have taken place as early as the 19th Century

Occupation: Predator

Group Membership: An unidentified (and possibly unnamed) vampire community (notably included the other leadership figure)

Affiliations: Tevye Cazaral;
he may or may not consider the vampire who vampirized him to be an ally

Enemies: Romani ("Gypsies" in the story; notably Tovarr, Maleva and Lupesch), unidentified peasant (and approximately 90 other similar victims), as well as presumably his victims before the agreement with Tevye;
    at least formerly
the vampire who vampirized him to be an ally

Known Relatives: None

Aliases: None

formerly a cavern near a village in an unspecified region in eastern Europe

enche-dogu-vampire-nobeardpostobFirst Appearance: Vampire Tales I#6/6 (August, 1974)

Powers/Abilities: As a vampire, Dogu presumably had superhuman strength (likely lifting around 1000 lbs.) and required regular blood meals to survive.

He could transform into a normal-sized bat; it is unrevealed whether he could transform into a wolf or into mist.

He was almost certainly vulnerable to a wooden stake through the heart. He avoided and was presumably vulnerable to sunlight. He presumably had the other standard vampire vulnerabilities, including religious icons, garlic, and silver.

Further, feeding on a human victim would turn that victim into a vampire, depending on the extent of the feeding and other circumstances.

Those he vampirized may or may not have been subservient to him.

When fully fed, he could likely heal rapidly from non-fatal wounds.

He may or may not have been able to mesmerize others with a gaze.

Height: 5'10" (approximately )
Weight: 160 lbs. (approximately )
Eyes: Unrevealed (presumably red; original color unrevealed)
Hair: Dark (likely black or dark brown, including goatee)

History:

(Vampire Tales I#6/6 (fb) - BTS) - Dogu Enche was the leader (or co-leader, see comments) of a vampire community dwelling within a cavern in a mountain near a village in eastern Europe.

Under unrevealed circumstances (see comments), Dogu and his community came into an agreement with villager Tevye Cazaral, who would send them victims in exchange for payment in gold, which they possessed in large amounts, presumably having claimed it from previous victims.

For three months, Tevye apparently delivered a victim each night to the vampire community.

(Vampire Tales I#6/6 (fb) - BTS) - With a leg bound behind him and posing as a crippled beggar, Tevye Cazaral sold a map to the location of a treasure within the labyrinth cavern to an unidentifed local laborer/peasant.

(Vampire Tales I#6/6) - As the peasant exalted over the gold, the vampires transformed from bat into humanoid form and preyed on the peasant. Many of the vampires swiftly and fatally drained his blood.

Tevye subsequently met with the vampires, who confirmed that the peasant had come to them as planned. Tevye then demanded his payment, which he had decided should be doubled. Dogu advised the human that they made decisions of that nature, but Tevye replied, "Not if you want me to continue supplying you with victims...or would you prefer to do your own stalking in the village...? How long would it take before they became aware of your -- and draped their doorways with garlic and crucifix?" Tevye further advised them that their agreement was better, as he sent the victims to them, and the villagers had evidence of nothing beyond mysterious disappearances. Finally, Tevye added that gold was not vital to their existence but that blood was. Dogu apparently paid Tevye what he demanded.

(Vampire Tales I#6/6 (fb) - BTS) - At some point, Tevye convinced some of the local townspeople that the Gypsies might be responsible for their recent rash of missing persons.

(Vampire Tales I#6/6 - BTS) - Again posing a crippled beggar, Tevye again sold a map, this time to the cavern-held treasure to Tovarr, a member of small Romani society camped outside of the village. Tovarr discussed the map with the senior Maleva in his caravan, who warned him of vampires who had once haunted that cave and may have continued to do so.

(Vampire Tales I#6/6) - As Tevye met with vampire community, assuring Dogu that they would feed on a victim of his sending that night, as they had done for the past three months, and that he had sold the map to a young Gypsy fool who would come to them.

Unbeknownst to Tevye or the vampires, Tovarr had silently entered the caverns and overheard this discussion (as well as observing that Tevye was not actually crippled).

(Vampire Tales I#6/6 - BTS) - Tovarr, alongside multiple Romani, confronted Tevye for his betrayal and forced him to accompany them into the woods.

(Vampire Tales I#6/6 (fb) - BTS) - In a cabin in relative proximity to the cavern of the vampires, Tovarr and his allies slew Tevye and drained his blood, which they used to leave a trail from the caverns to the cabin. Leaving the cabin door open, Tovarr and the Romani put crosses on the cabin's inner walls as well as on every door and window, and they presumably covered the cabin in dry tinder (possibly even soaking it in kerosene or something flammable).

(Vampire Tales I#6/6) - Having not fed the previous night, upon awakening after sunset, at least six of the vampires (apparently including Dogu) were drawn to the scent of blood, which they followed to the cabin, with some of them even stopping to lap at the small puddles partially soaked into the ground. Only after entering the cabin and finding Tevye's blood-drained corpse did Dogu realize it was a trap, at which point the door slammed. Trapped by the crosses, the vampires could not escape the cabin as the Romani set the cabin aflame, burning and presumably destroying all vampires within.

(Vampire Tales I#6/6 - BTS) - Tovarr and the Romani then returned to the cavern, using wooden arrows as stakes to slay a number of the vampires in bat or humanoid form (see comments). Although appreciating that at least a few of the vampires had escaped them, Tovarr considered that they infested these caverrns and that they would never get all of them.

The Romani loaded the gold treasure chest(s?) into their wagons, after which they planned to warn the villagers of the vampires still present in those caverns.

However, the villagers instead found the Romani caravans with the gold and assumed them to have murdered and robbed the missing villagers. Denying the vampires as Gypsy superstition, the villagers burned Tovarr and the rest of the Romani.

Comments: Created by Doug Moench and Vicente Alcazar.

Dogu was identified in the unabridged appendix to the vampires entry in Vampires: The Marvel Undead, an obvious homage to write Doug Moench.
    Similarly,
Tevye Cazaral's last name was an homage (and an anagram) of the last name of artist Vicente Alcazar.

It is not 100% clear to me which of the vampires in the community was Dogu. There appeared to be two similarly appearing men acting in a leadership role. However, one had facial hair and darker hair, with more of a standard robe, while the other had no facial hair, looked to be more gray, and had more of a raised collar.
As the older-looking one without the beard spoke to Tevye and did not rush out after the trail of blood, I went with that one as leader, and the other as the "other vampire community head figure."

It seems likely that the vampires of Dogu's community came upon Tevye and intended him as a victim, but that he negotiated for his survival by promising to regularly bring them victims. Of course, that's purely speculative, as I don't think think the circumstances of their alliance were detailed.
Independent of Tovarr's discovery, it would not seem that Tevye's ruse lcould have gone on too long on a nightly basis without discovery. Three months, with someone in the village vanishing on a daily basis for 90 days, is a pretty impressive amount of time to have gotten away with it already.

When Tovarr and his allies entered the vampire cavern, the narrative text said that they fired arrows into "scores of demented hellspawn." A score is 20, so scores should be at least 40. Only six were clearly shown entering the cabin, in which they all presumably perished, while at least four were shown to have escaped the Romani's arrows.

All victims fatally drained by the vampire community should have revived as vampires as well.

The profile was posted for Halloween 2026.
Tevye Cazaral and Tovarr (and his fellow Romani) will get full profiles at some point, just not in time for Halloween

Dogu Enche should be distinguished from:

other vampire community head figure

enche-dogu-vampire-profbeardenche-dogu-vampire-facebeard     Apparently prominent within the vampire community living in the caverns outside the town in eastern Europe, he was noticable via his goatee, dark hair and robe.

He participated in the regular feedings of those duped into entering their caverns by Tevye Cazaral, and he was present during discussions with Tevye.

There were a lot of images, and I wanted to include them all. I'm for maximum information over artistic design, but I'm fine if someone else can organize these in a more aesthetically-appealing format without losing the text or imagery.

(Vampire Tales I#6/6) - As the peasant exalted over the gold, he considered that the infirmity of the "crippled beggar" was truly his fortune, as had the man been able to walk, he never would have sold him the map to that place.

Engrossed in the gold, he failed to notice as the vampires transformed from bat into humanoid form.

As they rushed toward him, he could only scream, "No!" repeatedly before many of the vampires swiftly and fatally drained his blood.

Note:
All victims fatally drained by the vampire community should have revived as vampires as well.

He was apparently around the 90th such victim of Tevye and the vampire community.
