History:
(Strange Tales I#73/2) - Professor Egen was a scientist who was obsessed with discovering how the world would end. In order to learn the fate of mankind, Egen intended to build a time machine and journey to the future. However, when he presented his ideas to his fellow scientists they considered it an insane idea as, even if he could do it, it would be incredibly dangerous to tamper with time.
Undaunted, Professor Egen went ahead with his plans. The government, fearful of what he would do, confiscated his plans and equipment but he secretly set up a new workshop inside a cave and began working night and day until the time machine was complete. Just as the Army found the cavern, Egen entered the time machine and journeyed 50 years into the future.
Egen journeyed from 1959 to 2009 and found the world was ultra-modern as he expected; then he went to 2109 and saw it was even more advanced; in 2309 there were cities in Earth's orbit; then, in 3309, he found Earth was deserted and he believed they had journeyed to other worlds. However, in 3359, he found humans were on Earth but they were primitive cave-dwellers. Going to 4359 he found the Earth now looked much as it had in 1959. He was dumbfounded by the realization that humanity's progress was circular; there was seemingly no end, just cycle after cycle of renewal.
Exiting the time machine, Egen was overcome by a terrible headache. The time machine melted into slag and Egen forgot everything about his journey. However, he was left with the obsessive need to discover how the world would end. In order to learn the fate of mankind, Egen intended to build a time machine and journey to the future. However, when he presented his ideas to his fellow scientists they considered it an insane idea as, even if he could do it, it would be incredibly dangerous to tamper with time...
