Cal Duffy (Tennis coach; brief boyfriend of Mill Collins)

Powers/Abilities: Cal has some skills and experience arranging deals with modeling agencies, although he was willing to try to force a client (and girlfriend) into wearing sheer outfits with which they were not comfortable.

He tried to be a tennis coach, but he was much more concerned with professional touring and modeling options than with training or competitions.

Cal was formerly a talented tennis player, but his knee injury ended his ability to play competitively.

(15-Love#2 (fb) - BTS / 15-Love#2 (fb) - BTS) - An ambitious tennis player, Cal wanted to play on the (professional or challenger?) tour, but his coach, Walt, told him that he wasn't ready. They parted ways, and Cal trained had and badly injured his knee. He blamed Walt for not supporting his decision.

(15-Love#2) - While out jogging, Cal observed Mill playing tennis, and he took an interest in her.

He subsequently approached her, complimented her skills and told her he wondered how good she could be with a coach. She told him that she had a coach, although he was still sleeping. Giving her his card, Cal introduced himself and told her that he was a coach, after which she asked about his knee, and he told her that it was an injury from when he used to play tennis. He told her he was looking to develop a relationship with a young player, like her, but she reminded him that she already had a coach. Cal added that while her coach didn't work in the mornings, he was someone who liked to put in a full day's work. He told her that he would keep an eye on her and that she could call him anytime.

Another day, Cal approached Mill as she practiced again, apologizing for being pushy and bad-mouthing her coach, adding that he probably came over like a real jerk. After Mill admitted that he had seemed a little over-ambitious, Cal asked if he could take her out on a date to dinner and a movie, and she accepted.

That evening, Cal took Mill out to an intimate dinner at Maisy's. He was interested to hear that she had gotten the role of the tennis company Anstis' model, and he asked her to tell her more.

(15-Love#2 (fb) - BTS) - Cal showed Mill's modeling pictures with Anstis to another group of possible modeling clients.

(15-Love#2) - At a movie date at Cineplex, Cal was surprised to hear that Mill had no contract with Wendy (the wife of her coach, Walt) but just figured that they deserved a cut of her earnings. Although Mill told Cal that Wendy and Walt were like family, Cal advised her that family and business don't mix too well, and that it was best to have someone from outside acting as a mediator. When Mill started getting upset about Cal's implying that Walt and Wendy weren't what they seemed, he backed off, telling her that he cared about what was in her best interests, but as long as she was happy...

(15-Love#2 - BTS) - The next day, Walt became upset when Mill gave him money from Anstis, as he had wanted her focusing on tennis, and when she mentioned that she was seeing Cal Duffy, Walt became furious and forbade her to see him, telling her that Cal was poison. He instructed her to drop the modeling and Cal, Mill refused, and Cal told her to get herself a new coach.

(15-Love#3) - After Mill won a tennis game she had been losing due to forfeit when her opponent injured herself, Cal picked her up in his car. He told her not to beat herself up over her game but that her coach bailing on her was outrageous. Cal further told Mill that Walt had a track record, as he had coached him, working him until his knee was badly injured and then bailed on him, considering him worthless at that point.

Mill had a hard time believing that Walt would do that, but when Cal noted that Walt could turn on you suddenly, she appreciated having caught a glimpse of his flip side. When Cal offered to coach her again, she accepted.

The next day, Cal wanted to make some calls about her modeling, but Mill convinced him to help her as her quarter-final match was the next day, but he insisted that after that he had to get things moving. After Mill won that match, Cal gave her the latest issue of Tennis Weekly while he made some calls, and she was surprised to find herself in an ad therein. Cal was present as Mill won in the semis, as well, although while she was winning, he was on the phone to an agency, arguing about percentages.

Afterward, Cal told Mill that he was really proud of her, but when she noted that wanted to turn in early and get a good night's rest before the final the next day, he told her that they still had business to do. At Cafe Noir, after leaving Mill waiting for an hour, Cal told her that Bootex had faxed their contract. When Mill again stressed that she needed sleep to play well, Cal told her to order double espresso's for both of them. She told him that she didn't drink caffeine while training, but he told her that things would only take a second and that he had sweet-talked Bootex into giving her a five-year deal, selling her potential as a player and spokesperson for their products: If she signed with them as her sponsors and joined the tour, they would both be on their way to being disgustingly rich.

Wanting to focus on the finals the next day, against her best friend, Mill refused to sign at that time and caught a cab home; as she headed out, Cal told her to forget about the Wayde Tennis Academy and instead focus on the professional(?) tour.

(15-Love#3 (fb) - BTS) - Cal worked most of the night getting the press on board.

(15-Love#3) - The next morning, Cal didn't give Mill a wakeup call, and when she got to the match, he told her to smile as the press took pictures of her and asked if she would be modeling Bootex for Babe TV. He then urged her to sign the contract before Bootex had second thoughts, and he told her that he had been having talks with a fashion designer. Upset and wanting to focus on her game, Mill walked away from him.

During the tennis match, Cal distracted Mill with the contract, and when he showed her a Bootex sports bra, which was see-though, and kept asking her to sign, Mill was warned that there could not be communication between coaches and players during the game and that another warning would result in forfeiture.

Hearing Walt in the stands cheering for her, Mill outplayed her opponent and friend, Poi Chue. However, as Mill prepared to serve match point, Cal called out to her to serve and sign. Not only did this distract her and cause her to serve into the net, the umpire announced that Mill forfeited the match for a second warning for coaching.

Cal called to Mill that it was time to stop wasting her talent on the small time, and then he answered her query that she would wear the Bootex sports bra and parade herself on Babe TV if she wanted to make money. Mill shoved Cal, knocking him on his butt, and told him that he was a sleazeball and that she wanted him to get lost.

(15-Love#3 - BTS) - Mill and Walt patched things up, and Walt explained the truth about his past relationship with Cal.

"In yesterday's conference call covering Marvel's financial, one tidbit of publishing news was revealed. Marvel President Bill Jemas mentioned that Marvel wants to reach 15-year-old girls with its publishing program and that the way to do this is women's tennis. Rather than create a brand new player from the ground up, Marvel reached into its archives, Jemas explained. "We found Millie the Model, a character which probably no one here has heard of," he said, referring to the investors and analysts who were on the line for the call (certainly not the readers of this news item!) Millie will be recast as a 15-year-old tennis player in a book entitled 15 LOVE."

    That would seem to imply that this story is not-616, but, regardless of that intent, the story didn't contain anything to indicate that this was an alternate Millie the Model, and the names aren't that rare. For my money, the story could have taken place on Earth-616 prior to the "modern age," which started with the Fantastic Four's spaceflight.
    Also, if she was really 15-years-old, how old was Cal to be dating her and have all of those connections? I'd have to think at least 21-years-old, which is a little creepy.
    I think Mill had to be at least 18, as she couldn't sign any contracts as a minor, anyway.

It is worth noting that the comic was announced in 1999 but released in 2011. Plans likely changed during that time, transforming 15-Love from the Millie the Model reboot into the Millie the Model spin-off. The fact that Mill has an aunt explicitly named Millie allows it to fit neatly into the 616 with in-story evidence.
