dooit-johnny-oz-toolchestdooit-johnny-oz-feastPowers/Abilities: Johnny can move at vast speeds.

He can also open portals in the ground through which he could almost instantly transport to other parts of Oz.

Utilizing a chest of tools that he could transport with him, he could assemble a sailboat or a flying craft within seconds.

His chest of tools seemed to be something of a tesseract, with much more equipment and shelving units able to be removed from it than would appear based on its size. Shelves could be extended to heights defying gravity and balance, and he could also draw out a ladder to reach the higher shelving units.

Enjoying his work, Johnny sometimes sang motivational songs about working hard and enjoying one's work.

He could also consume large amount of food extremely quickly.

Despite the extreme length of each of the sides of his mustache, they apparently do not become tangled in his work...perhaps they contribute. It appears as if at least one side of his mustache serves as a belt.

Presumably his fast speed and superhuman metabolism kept him lean...or it was just magic.

Height: Unrevealed (approximately 5')
Weight: Unrevealed (approximately 110 lbs.)
Eyes: Unrevealed (his eyes are almost completely closed in all pictures)
Hair: Light gray (including mustache; balding slightly; possibly darker in youth)

dooit-johnny-oz-buildsandboatdooit-johnny-oz-sandboatHistory:
(Road to Oz#4 (fb) - BTS) - Johnny Dooit encountered the Shaggy Man and loved him platonically due to the Shaggy Man's possession of the Love Magnet.

(Road to Oz#4) - Encountering the Deadly Desert (contact with which would turn the travelers to dust) that surrounded Oz, the Shaggy Man -- who was there with his new friends Button Bright, Polychrome, Dorothy Gale and her dog, Toto -- used the Love Magnet to summon Johnny Dooit, telling him he needed him as bad as bad can be.

Johnny appeared almost instantly, trunk by his side, and announced his presence, but he told the Shaggy Man that he shouldn't say he needed him "bad" because he was always, always good (plus "bad" is grammatically incorrect; it should be "badly," which might have eliminated the confusion...and the amusing comment).

The Shaggy Man thanked Johnny for coming so quickly, and Johnny assured him that he never wasted time, after which he asked the Shaggy Man where he had gotten the donkey head, adding that he wouldn't have recognized him if he hadn't looked at his feet.

Although the Shaggy Man didn't answer the question, he had had his head turned into a donkey head by King Kik-a-Bray of Dunkiton. Although it didn't come up (because Johnny Dooit had never met him before), Button Bright at the time similarly possessed a foxhead from King Dox of Foxville.

The Shaggy Man then told Johnny that he had asked him to come help them because they were anxious to reach the Land of Oz, but they couldn't cross the desert without being turned all living flesh into dust. Contemplating the matter briefly, Johnny swiftly concluded that they must ride in a sand-boat, which had runners like a sled and sails like a ship. He explained that the wind would blow them across the desert, and that the sand could not touch their flesh.

When Dorothy asked him where the sand-boat was, Johnny told her he would make her one.

Opening up his tool chest, Johnny extended multiple shelves and began singing while moving at great speeds to assemble the sand-boat, apparently in well under a minute. He added that he could paint it for them in three seconds but that it would take an hour to dry, which was a waste of time.

The Shaggy Man replied that he didn't care what it looked like if only it would carry them across the desert. Johnny assured him that it would do that and that all they needed to worry about was tipping over.

Telling them to sail the sand-boat the way a ship was sailed and they would be across the desert before they knew it, Johnny shut his tool chest, and then he vanished with the chest before Dorothy could even thank him for his kindness.

(Road to Oz#4 - BTS) - Helping his friends into the sand-boat, the Shaggy Men advised them that Johnny Dooit hadn't time to listen to thanks, and that he supposed Johnny was already at work in some other part of the world.

The Shaggy Man sailed the sand-boat across the desert but was unable to stop before they reached the rocky edge on the other side. The sand-boat shattered against the rocks, but its occupants safely landed within the Land of Oz.

(Road to Oz#6) - Invited to the Emerald City for Ozma's birthday, Johnny Dooit demonstrated his vast speed and appetite during the feast.

The next day after everyone gathered at the arena in the green fields, Johnny eventually went on with his tool chest, constructing a ship in extremely rapid fashion before thanking the Ozma for her hospitality and then flying away.

Comments: Created by L. Frank Baum;
    adapted by
Eric Shanower and Skottie Young.

I really enjoyed reading all of the books of Oz when I was young, and I read them all again with my kids as they grew up. The illustrated comic versions worked out nicely, as Henry and Kate were born in 2008 and 2010 respectively.

They are a lot of fun, with lots of interesting characters.

As is often the case, the original, book version of the Wizard of Oz is way better than the movie that everybody knows.

Especially given that the adventures of Dorothy and the Land of Oz took place in the early 20th Century, I don't see any reason why the Land of Oz can't be some magic realm that exists in Reality-616.

Thanks to Loki for suggesting Johnny Dooit as a character to profile to represent Oz.

    Loki further added:

In the novels, Road to Oz is also his only Baum-written appearance as well, so he's got no additional backstory to cover from any books not adapted to comics. He does reappear and star in the 2003 novel Do It For Oz by Chris Dulabone, but that's an unofficial continuation released after Road to Oz became public domain, so at best it merits mention in the comments.

This profile was completed 12/21/2025, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th anniversary 's celebratory event.
