Powers/Abilities: Doctor Strange is a powerful
magic-user with centuries of accumulated magical knowledge.
He was able to keep both himself and the Hulk's head alive far beyond the regular human lifespan, open portals both to other dimensions and into deep space and use spells such as the Winds of Watoomb and the Flames of Faltine.
He had expended much of his power fighting Dormammu and keeping the Hulk's head alive, so he only resorted to magic in the most extreme circumstances.

History: (Doctor Strange: The Best Defense#1 (fb)) - Doctor Strange was a renowned physician who would go on to become Earth's Sorcerer Supreme. He battled multiple foes threatening Earth's realm such as Dormammu and Nightmare and was a member of the Defenders. He married Dormammu's niece Clea, but their marriage eventually fell apart.
(Defenders: The Best Defense#1 (fb)) - When a cosmic Train of planets was about to collide with Earth, Strange asked Galactus to destroy it. The Devourer did so, but the radiation from the Train's explosion still reached and devastated Earth.
(Doctor Strange: The Best Defense#1 (fb) - BTS) - In the wake of the disaster, various enemies of Earth attacked. Dormammu emerged victorious, and Strange promised that he would defeat him one day. The few other survivors were hunted down by Dormammu's spawn, but Strange recovered the head of the Hulk and magically altered him to feed on magic instead of gamma radiation. He would carry the Hulk's head with him, using magic to keep him alive, all while searching for the Silver Surfer's surfboard and hiding from Dormammu.
(Doctor Strange: The Best Defense#1) - Sensing his end approach, Strange plucked out his left eye to re-power the Eye of Agamotto so that it could guide him to his final destination. He was attacked by Dormammu's spawn and fought them off with the Winds of Watoomb, knowing that the monsters would wait for the night to finish him off. The Eye of Agamotto guided Strange to the crater left by the piece of Silver Surfer's board, and Strange conjured theFlames of Faltine to act as a lure.
Strange went to sleep and was awakened by Dormammu himself, who gloated at Strange's diminished state and prepared to finish him off. Strange produced the Hulk's head from his bag just as Dormammu unleashed a powerful blast of magic intended to obliterate him. The Hulk absorbed all that energy and, just as he and Strange had planned, unleashed a powerful burst that seemingly disintegrated Dormammu. Strange used the remains of the board to ride the shockwave of the explosion back into the past to warn the Defenders. It predictably killed him, but he still managed the remainder of the trip in his astral form.
(Immortal Hulk: The Best Defense#1) - Strange's remains, along with the Eye of Agamotto, landed in a shed in New Mexico in his relative past of Earth-616. The Eye was recovered by a man who used its power to terrorize the local population. The magic guided Bruce Banner of Earth-616 to find Strange's remains and seek out his killer. Banner recovered the Eye of Agamotto, but it was the Hulk who solved the mystery and to whom Strange revealed his astral form.
(Defenders: The Best Defense#1) - Strange's astral self told the Hulk about the Train, driven by the Conductor, who was currently controlled byNebulon to drive the Train on a collision course with Earth. Securing Hulk's help, astral Strange opened a portal to one of the hellish dimensions. Demons Borss and Mog'rys, the ones behind Nebulon, were attacked by the Hulk, who bit off one of their heads before both demons abandoned their physical bodies and fled. Strange then conjured another portal to the Train itself, where Nebulon was fighting Earth-616 Namor and Silver Surfer in deep space.
After going through the portal,
Hulk threw the Surfer at Namor but held onto his board and bashed
Nebulon with it. This provided a distraction for Strange, who slid his
astral form into the Conductor and created a spasm that ejected the
planet Vodan, about to be burned in the Train's furnace, into deep
space. Namor and Silver Surfer combined their powers to transport Vodan
to a sun that would support its life. Ejecting Vodan altered the
Train's course away from Earth, just as Strange had planned for
thousands of years.
With Earth saved, Nebulon's deal with Mephisto fell through, and the demon appeared to collect his soul. Strange asked Mephisto to take the Hulk back to Earth, and Mephisto agreed, at the cost of Strange's own soul. Mephisto chained Strange in Hell and gloated that he had no chance of escape, but Strange had a plan in mind and only smiled in return.
