History:
(Mark Hazzard: Merc I#4) - Dirkson was sent to Manhattan to recruit the mercenary Mark Hazzard for the C.I.A. At the time he arrived on November 8, 1986, Hazzard had been arrested by the New York Police Department for destroying a building while in pursuit of terrorists. Captain Allison met with Dirkson and other officials as he complained about Hazzard's actions. Dirkson had thought it would be difficult to recruit Hazzard but learning of his troubles he decided it would be easy to recruit him now that he was in so much trouble with the law.
Dirkson went to visit Hazzard in his cell but Hazzard refused to speak to him. After Hazzard posted bail, Dirkson followed him and told him, "the Company is looking for a few good men." Hazzard refused to listen to Dirkson's proposal. Accompanied by another agent, Dirkson broke into Hazzard's apartment to await his return home. When Hazzard entered the apartment, Dirkson's fellow agent surprised Hazzard and held a gun on him so that Dirkson could make his pitch. Dirkson asked Hazzard and his team of mercenaries to take on a contract from the C.I.A. to perform domestic operations that the C.I.A. were legally prohibited from performing. Dirkson told Hazzard he had an "annyong sense of right and wrong. I like that." In exchange for taking on the job, all charges against him would be dropped. If he refused to take the job, Dirkson would seize Hazzard's gun permits, charge his police friend Claire Burnett for conspiring with him and send Hazzard to jail. Dirkson handed Hazzard airline tickets and told him to be on the flight indicated, then left Hazzard's apartment.
Dirkson was taken hostage by the terrorists Besq and Irham, whose associates had been killed by Hazzard. Wanting to strike at Hazzard through people they assumed were Hazzard's friends, Besq and Irham commandeered a school bus and along with Dirkson captured Claire Burnett, her husband Rick, Hazzard's lawyer Lewis Hart. Besq and Irham threatened their hostages in order to force Hazzard to surrender to them. As the terrorists explained why they were going to kill each of their hostages, they noted Dirkson's employers had done "a lot of dirty work to our brothers struggling for survival in oppressive regimes." However, Hazzard's fellow mercenaries, led by Mal Rossi, set up a roadblock to stop the school bus, causing it to crash. In the confusion of the crash, Besq caught Dirkson and held a gun to his head but Lewis hit Besq in the head with his briefcase, setting Dirkson free. Dirkson continued to insist that Hazzard needed to work for him in order to solve his problems but Hazzard refused, electing to face the consequences of his previous actions if need be, saying "Once you hook-up with those guys, they keep you doing their dirty work for the rest of your life."
Comments: Created by Peter David, Alan Kupperberg and "Jack Fury" (pseudonym for Gray Morrow, Jim Fern, Art Nichols and Sam de la Rosa).
Dirkson only ever referred to his agency as "the Company," but that's the typical code for the C.I.A.
