History: (G.O.D.S.#2 (fb) - BTS) - Born with affinity for magic, Mia DiMaria was abandoned by her mother at the age of 2 and was raised at an orphanage for the next decade. One night, after what she considered to be the worst week of her life, Mia prayed for someone to save her and unwittingly invoked words of power with her latent gifts. The universe granted her request, and Mia was placed in an extraordinary guardianship. She studied hard and got accepted into Columbia University, where she felt unable to skip on work because she lacked the safety net of her friends.
(G.O.D.S.#2) - Mia was studying in the University library when a woman handed her a decimal book code. Mia joined her friends for a night out but had to leave early to continue her studies. Remembering the code, she returned to the library and found that it led her to "The Lost Years of Yabbat Ummon Turru: The Failed History of the Black Swan. A Book of the Black Priests." The woman was waiting for Mia and explained that she had passed her first test by finding the book, as most people were incapable of even seeing it. Mia pulled on the book, opening a doorway to the Library of the Worlds.
The woman invited Mia inside and explained to Mia the nature of her unique gift. Introducing herself as Aiko Maki, a servant of the science, she asked Mia for the privilege of observing Mia's study of magic, the science's opposite. Mia refused, but before she left Aiko told her that this was the only way for Mia to be herself.
Back at the University, Mia spoke to her friend Emily, who was friendly and helpful despite the vast difference in their social standing. That night, Mia returned to Columbia's library; Aiko was waiting and told Mia that in a place of science she could never excel no matter how hard she worked because science was not in her nature. Aiko offered Mia another way, and Mia accepted.
(G.O.D.S.#5 (fb) - BTS) - What Aiko did not tell Mia was the cost: by becoming a minion of the Centum who served The-Natural-Order-of-Things, Mia would never be accepted by The-Powers-That-Be that embodied the magical aspect of reality and hated her opposite.
(G.O.D.S.#3 (fb) - BTS) - Back at the Library of the Worlds, Aiko went for a meeting with Wyn and Doctor Strange, leaving Mia alone at the bar. Not old enough to drink alcohol, Mia ordered a glass of milk.
(G.O.D.S.#3) - At the bar, Mia met Dimitri Krakov, who asked how she had found her way to the Library. Mia nonchalantly revealed that Aiko had helped her. They were joined at the bar by none other than Oblivion, a Universal Abstract. As Dimitri tried to talk to him, Cassandra (Amelia Addison) entered the Library of Worlds and shot A.I.M. scientist Robert Forson.
(G.O.D.S.#4) - Though wounded, Forson produced a weapon of total annihilation but was stopped from using it by Doctor Strange and Wyn. Dimitri introduced Mia to his master, who shook her hand and noted that she had been marked. Without knowing what that meant, Mia introduced herself as a minion of Aiko.
(G.O.D.S.#6 (fb) - BTS) - Mia moved to the House of Ranks and Numbers, the headquarters of the Centum.
(G.O.D.S.#5 (fb) - BTS) - Aiko gave Mia a card with a ridiculous balance on it. Mia used it to get herself a luxury apartment but did not even begin to furnish it or otherwise spend the money. Instead, she focused on magical studies and mastered several defensive spells.
(G.O.D.S.#5) - One month later, Wyn came to ask Mia for help. After inquiring on her progress, Wyn took her to a place where the Black Swans had been kidnapping and sacrificing men to produce a message, one letter at a time. Wyn's chained apprentice Dimitri was one of the men taken, and Wyn needed Mia to retrieve him, as male magic users were not allowed in. Introducing herself by invoking the gods she now served, Mia delivered Wyn's message and gave the Black Swans a time window in which Dimitri had disappeared. They let her watch the security tapes and identify him, but nothing came without a cost, and Mia agreed to look at the message the Black Swans were assembling. She was unable to read it but identified the number of letters still missing, which satisfied the Swans. Dimitri was reunited with Wyn, and Mia was ecstatic about her newfound purpose in life, only for Wyn to break to her the hard truth about what Aiko's interference had cost her.
(G.O.D.S.#6 - BTS) - Meanwhile, Aiko came to care deeply for Mia and, feeling guilty for what she had done to her, went to see the highest of powers to make it right again. The Living Tribunal refused her plea, but his "brother" Oblivion decided to restore Mia's magical potential by taking her after his own wing. The bargain cost Aiko both of her eyes.
(G.O.D.S.#6 (fb)) - When Mia next saw Aiko, she yelled and berated her for stealing her future and refused to speak to her afterwards.
(Spectacular Spider-Men#10 (fb) - BTS) - Now caught between The-Powers-That-Be and The-Natural-Order-of-Things, Mia was asked by Doctor Strange to check on Juliet Marcos, a recently manifested magic-user.
(Spectacular Spider-Men#10) - Mia approached Juliet and asked her to demonstrate her powers. After witnessing her transform into each of the four primal elements, Mia concluded that Juliet was born with an affinity for elemental magic, which were activated by the trauma she had experienced at the Arcadium. They were then joined by the two Spider-Men, and Juliet named herself Elementary.
(Spectacular Spider-Men#11 (fb)) - They went to Central Park, where Mia asked Juliet about her experience at being a superhero, while Miles Morales brought in Gust with whom for Juliet to train. Juliet shifted between her four elemental forms, which was observed and interpreted as an insult by the Seelies of the Central Park, who used their magic to shrink the four superheroes and Mia to mite size. Before Mia could assess the situation, the Seelies attacked and kidnapped her, Juliet and Gust.
(Spectacular Spider-Men#11) - The three of them were brought before the judgement of Queen Mabh and Prince Obheron of the Seelie Court. The Queen judged their hearts and found them pure enough for humans, while the Spider-Men who followed them were judged to have the hearts of true heroes. Mia was warned against practicing magic in the Seelie Kingdom without speaking the proper rites, after which the prisoners were freed and restored to their proper size.
(Spectacular Spider-Men#15) - When Elementary disappeared following a battle with Electros, Spider-Men recruited everyone they knew to look for her. Mia used magic to track Juliet to a city wharf, where her trail ended. Mia theorized that Juliet either switched to a human form or jumped into the water and allowed herself to dissipate. Shay Marken brought in Hydro-Man, who together with Wave helped Mia search the water to test this theory.
(G.O.D.S.: One World Under Doom (fb) - BTS) - After Dimitri went missing and was presumed dead, Wyn took on Mia as his new chained apprentice, allowing her to represent the side of science in the proxy to The-Natural-Order-of-Things while continuing to study magic. However, Mia felt that Wyn did not treat her with enough respect, only coming to her when he needed something and not providing any teaching. Instead, Wyn lent Mia some magical tomes and let her figure everything out on her own.
(G.O.D.S.: One World Under Doom) - Wyn barged into Mia's room and insisted that they needed to save the world from immediate catastrophe. He then opened a portal that took them to Doctor Doom, currently Sorcerer Supreme and Emperor of Earth and introduced Mia as his proxy in service of The-Natural-Order-of-Things. Doom immediately sensed Mia's magical potential and expressed interest in her for combining science with magic. Wyn explained that as Sorcerer Supreme Doom had failed to maintain protective sigils that kept demons from devouring the Sun's core and which now needed to be repaired from the inside. Mia was flabbergasted at how something vital to all life could be left up to a single person and chastised Wyn for being irresponsible with this.
The three of them performed a spell that teleported them to Sun's core within a bubble of normal space. Mia freaked out, but Doom asked for her assistance in restoring the protective sigils. Doom showed Mia how to perform this task with the kind respect of a teacher, which Mia appreciated. The demons broke inside the bubble, and Wyn and Mia fought them while Doom repaired the remaining sigils. They finished with a banishing spell that cast the demons out, but not before the demons cast their own spell that nullified the protective bubble. In an instant, the solar plasma rushed back in, but Doom was prepared: his device adjusted the nuclear forces of the three magicians, making them intangible for the next three minutes. Wyn insulted Doom's technological solution, so Doom teleported Mia and himself back to Castle Doom without him.
Mia told Doom that even though she did not like Wyn, she did not want to leave him burning inside the Sun for eternity. Doom offered to bring him back if Mia asked, but after a brief consideration Mia declined, not wanting to be placed in Doom's debt. Instead, she spent several weeks researching teleportation magic and developed a spell that grabbed Wyn from the past right before the bubble had collapsed and deposited him in the present. Humbled, Wyn apologized to Mia and promised to treat his apprentice better. Mia, however, had learned from Doom to see value in herself and quit being Wyn's apprentice altogether, telling him that they would work as partners or not at all. Wyn agreed and shook her hand, finally addressing Mia by her name.
Comments: Created by Jonathan Hickman and Valerio Schiti. An article on Marvel.com introduced Mia as "Mia the Magic Girl," a moniker which had not appeared within the comics themselves in any capacity, including the solicit blurbs or the recap pages.
In G.O.D.S.#2 the name of the Black Swan is spelled as "Yabbat Ummon Turru" on the book cover. This spelling originated from an error that has propagated online, the Black Swan is consistently named "Yabbat Ummon Tarru" in her actual comic appearances.

Mia DiMaria of Earth-616 should not be confused with:
(G.O.D.S.#8 (fb) - BTS) Over the next 100 years, Mia and Aiko tried talking but could get past what had happened between them. Mia had severed her ties with science to fully embrace magic under her new patron Oblivion, showing little signs of aging.
(G.O.D.S.#8) Mia, Wyn and Doctor Strange were present at the aftermath of a war between the Abstract Entities and an enemy pantheon. After commenting on what the scientists would call it, Mia agreed with Doctor Strange that it was the victory of the power, and that any other view was merely an illusion projected by that power. Mia then gave her condolences to Wyn for what had happened to him in the several decades he was indisposed for.
