History:
(Book of Lost Souls#3 (fb) - BTS) - As young
girl, Denni made lots of drawings, but her dad told her it was a waste
of time, and that nobody "would ever
pay money for her stuff, so why bother?"
(Book of Lost Souls#3 (fb) - BTS) - Denni ran away from home. Her parents caught her, and she went back home.
(Book of Lost Souls#3 (fb) - BTS) - When she turned 14-year-old, Denni ran away again. This time, her parents didn't go after her; Denni figured they thought it was just too much trouble. She went up through Portland to Seattle, but she subsequently went back to Portland because of the cold.

Denni "bummed around, hooked up with a few guy" in succession for
periods of time.

Denni met Lee, who was also apparently homeless, and she showed him her
drawings. He thought they were really good, and he spent time talking
to people passing buy as she drew, getting them to give them money. He
told her that someday, people would pay good money for her drawings and
that what they had gone through would help other people understand the
way they lived, because that's what art was for.
Lee's belief in her helped Denni
believe in herself. She loved that he was funny and goofy a lot of the
time but sometimes "got all Shakespeare on her," telling her things
like, "I would shower you with such
affection as would make the sky lament the insufficiency of rain."

BTS) - Lee told Denni that she could draw anything, and it would be so
good it was like it was alive, looking back at her.
(Book of Lost Souls#3 (fb) - BTS) - Lee told Denni that there a darkness in big cities, something almost alive, and if your weren't really careful, it would eat you and everybody you ever cared about.
(Book of Lost Souls#3 (fb) - BTS) - Lee and Denni enjoyed going to the local Denny's, at least in part because it was like her name.

BTS) - Lee started hanging out with some guys who were doing heroin.
Denni told him not to try it, but he didn't listen, and then he
couldn't stop.
(Book of Lost Souls#3 (fb)) - Telling Denni that he wanted to always be there for her and to see when she would make it big, Lee promised to stop doing heroin, but what he promised would be his last dose killed him.
(Book of Lost Souls#3 (fb) - BTS) - Denni figured that the city had finally gotten Lee, and she was upset that the whole world kept moving and that no one seemed to care. She tried to keep going and keep drawing because he believed in her and would have wanted her to, but she struggled to go on, considering that it would be so easy to just give up.

Lee's picture on a wall, feeling that it was like he was looking back at
her.
(Book of Lost Souls#3) - As Denni sat on the sidewalk painting, Jonathan -- a man brought forward in time to save those who had lost all hope in their lives -- dropped some coins in her pouch. She thanked him, and they made a little small talk, after which he introduced her to his enigmatic talking cat, Mystery (although he did not speak to Denni at the time), whom she warmly greeted. She subsequently thanked Jonathan for the money, but made it clear that she wasn't a hooker or anything; he assured her that he never thought otherwise. When he asked her if she would like to get something to eat with him, she agreed -- as long as he was clear "on that, y'know, other stuff." She shared that there was a Denny's down the street to which she used to go with Lee..."because it's like my name...I'm Denni."
(Book of Lost Souls#3 - BTS) - While
Denni went to the bathroom at a nearby gas station, Mystery told
Jonathan that he liked her and that she thought he was a sweetie.
Jonathan asked Mystery if he thought of himself as a sweetie, and
Mystery clarified that he was a lion in training. 
(Book of Lost Souls#3) - Before
returning to Jonathan, Denni stopped by her painting of Lee, wiped away
her tears and touched its lips. At Jonathan's suggestion, Denni was
receptive to the idea of getting a steak, which she had not had in a
long time. Although the restaurant's maitre d told them there were no
open tables, Jonathan gave him a hundred dollars for them and Mystery,
and they were allowed to have a table.
During dinner, Denni told Jonathan about Lee. After helping Jonathan figure out the tip percentage of the bill, she brought him to see her drawing of Lee, but she was disturbed to find that it's arms were lower than she had drawn them, and she felt that it had moved, perhaps indicating that maybe her drawing was coming to life. When Jonathan tried to tell her that wasn't possible, she got mad and told him that he didn't believe in her like Lee did, and she told him to leave her alone.
While Jonathan and Mystery confirmed and appreciated that darkness would be trying to destroy innocence that night, the drawing spoke to Denni, telling her that it missed her and that her love had drawn him back. It further told her that it could only meet her halfway and that the city always tricked people into believing and then took it all away. It encouraged her to give up, told her to come to her and that it loved her, and then materialized a syringe presumably full of heroin.
When Denni reached for it, Jonathan told her not to do it, and that that thing was not Lee, and that she had to know that Lee would not have encouraged her to kill herself. He further explained that it was a voice, given form from her art, and -- as Mystery entered the wall with the painting -- that it was the voice of reason and resentment, which told you that dreams were not worth shooting for and that success was unlikely.
Mystery then apparently allowed
Lee -- the voice of love -- to manifest through the drawing and destroy
the darker voice manifesting through it.
Mystery then manifested Lee's
spirit through the drawing, and it told her to keep doing what she was
doing, that he loved her and that he would always be there for him.

Denni apparently added Jonathan and Mystery to her drawing of Lee.
Sometime thereafter, a man
approached Denni as she drew by the sidewalk, and he bought one of her
drawings for $5 and then asked if he could show a friend of his who
owned an art gallery. He noted that it might not go anywhere, as his
friend was pretty picky. When he asked if she would be there later, she
assured him that she was staying no matter what. He asked if she
thought this represented her best work, and she told him not really,
but that her best work -- the drawing of Lee, Jonathan & Mystery --
didn't travel well.
This profile was

anniversary 's celebratory event to represent the Book of Lost Souls
series and characters.
