"DAUGHTERS OF THE MOON"

daughters_of_the_moon-93060-wh-arrivalMembership: Unidentified witch queen, unidentified "sisters" (other female members);
    unidentified male servant

Identity/Class: Alternate Reality (Earth-93060/Ultraverse) vampires +/- magic-users;

Purpose: Worship of the moon goddess

Aliases: Coven

Affiliations:Luna the Moon Goddess (aka Lady Moon and Midnight's Queen; see comments)

Enemies: Seventh Sign (Witch Hunter/Maria DeLorentti, Gabriel Frost, Zachariah Frost)

Base of Operations: 319 Rampling Way in an unidentified city, presumably within the USA?

First Appearance: Witch Hunter#1 (April, 1996)

Powers/Abilities: The general membership of the coven were vampires, drinking human blood (and presumably converting their victims into vampires). They could be destroyed at least by decapitation and by the metabodies within the bloodstream of Witch Hunter.
    Witch Hunter called the whole group witches, but they did not demonstrate magical powers beyond being vampires.

    They were led by a vampire witch queen, who could apparently invoke magical powers from the moon, especially via human sacrifice. She could fly and had greater strength and fighting ability than the other witches, but was certainly vulnerable to Witch Hunter's Hallowed Blade and could be destroyed by decapitation with that blade.

    Once destroyed/slain (at least if by decapitation and/or by Witch Hunter's metabodies), their flesh burst into flames, rapidly burning them to leave behind only smoldering skeletons.

    The coven were apparently all women, although they also used male vampires as servants.

History:
(Witch Hunter#1 (fb) - BTS) - Gabriel Frost of the Seventh Sign was on a recon mission (presumably to investigate a witch coven), but he got too close and was abducted by the coven of vampire witches, who planned to sacrifice him to their goddess, Luna, at the Moon's zenith the next night. Gabriel's grandfather Dr. Zachariah Frost sent Witch Hunter out to find him.

(Witch Hunter#1) - Sensing and locating a male vampire who served the coven on the streets, Witch Hunter confronted him and demanded he tell her the coven's location. The vampire initial refused to tell her anything, but when she cut his chest with her Hallowed Blade -- a gift from Angels -- the agony forced him to reveal the location of the coven and Gabriel, although he told her that there was no way she could get there in time as he was going to be sacrificed in five minutes. Swiftly skewering the vampire through the chest and then decapitating him with her blade, Witch Hunter rushed to that location.

daughters_of_the_moon-93060-circle-small    As the Witch Queen invoked Luna and offered her the gift of blood as she prepared to plunge her dagger into the chain-bound Gabriel, Witch Hunter crashed through the glass window at the top of the ceiling and demanded they stay away from Gabriel. Her senses subsequently told her that the members of the coven were not human but rather vampires. While she slew a few of the vampires with her sword, another proclaimed that their queen was at their height of her power and that she further empowered them; that person exhorted the others to slay the intruder and drink her blood.

    Appreciating that she could kill them all one by one but not before they slew Gabriel and further appreciating that they would not be able to withstand the metabodies within her bloodstream, Witch Hunter surprised the vampires by surrendering. The queen called upon her sisters to fall upon her, telling them that their goddess moon thirsted from on high. The vampires then swarmed over her, biting her and drinking her blood. Although she had endured worse pain in her service to the Seventh Sign, she was taken aback at the sensuous gush of hot blood roaring out of her. Her consciousness faded.

(Witch Hunter#1 (fb) - BTS) - As the vampires consumed her blood, the metabodies set their bodies aflame, destroying them.

(Witch Hunter#1) - Witch Hunter revived, surrounded by the smoldering corpses of the other vampires, and after her wounds swiftly healed, she confronted the witch queen.

    Having witnessed Witch Hunter's power, the witch queen threatened to kill Gabriel if she came closer but promised to spare him if she let her escape. The furious Witch Hunter attacked recklessly,and the witch queen swattered her aside and grabbed her by the neck.

    As Witch Hunter regained her focus, she told the witch queen she could not kill her and that she couldn't get away from her. Flying out into the sky -- through the window Witch Hunter had shattered on the way in -- holding Witch Hunter by the neck and telling her that they were both going to Hell. The witch queen warned Witch Hunter that if she slew her at that point, she would die, too, as she could not survive the fall, but Witch Hunter punched her back, telling her that she'd never know. Proclaiming "Deo favente" (with God's favor), Witch Hunter plunged her blade through the witch queen's chest, after which she pulled it back out and sliced off her head.

    The flesh burnt off the witch queen so that only the components of her skeleton struck the ground, while Witch Queen uncomfortably withstood the landing, freed Gabriel and then departed with him.

Comments: Created by Lauren Sutton and Joyce Chin.

    They were really only called a coven in-story. Their leader calls upon the moon and and call themselves her daughters. Maybe they are the Daughters of Luna

    Luna is the Roman divine embodiment of the moon and the counterpart of the Greek Titaness Selene. However, we don't know much beyond that of her existence in the Ultraverse. Most of the gods we saw were from Vahdala. It is unrevealed whether Luna was an actual goddess in the Ultraverse, or just a name given to the moon, which they worshipped as a goddess.
