History:
(Mystical Tales I#1/4) - Cedric Chalmers was a modern art painter. He
was once hired by the wealthy Melville H. Dodworth to paint his
portrait but the resulting work of modern art offended Dodworth.
Dodworth refused to pay for the portrait but Chalmers, standing on
principle, refused to alter his art style to accommodate the patron.
Dodworth quickly ushered Chalmers out of his house.
For his next project, Cedric painted portraits of the wealthy Penelope Hopwell and her daughter Audrey but once again, the modern art style offended them and Penelope refused to pay for his work. Next, he painted Lance Larriby's portrait but Lance likewise disdained the work and refused to pay for it.
Cedric used the last of his money to enter the four as a collection at the Central Fine Arts Exhibit but most of the patrons to the exhibit mocked his work. Much to his surprise, the Central Gallery informed him a buyer representing "the royal family" had purchased all four portraits for $50,000. After the money came through, Cedric realized that, if he could learn the identities of his audience, he could become a famous artist. He went to England to learn if the British royal family had bought the portraits but they informed him they hadn't. He tried again in Norway and other European monarchies then monarchies in the Middle East and Siam. Even a deposed monarch living in Italy informed him that he was not the buyer.
Cedric returned home, still possessing plenty of money but an unknown benefactor. As he entered his studio, he found the telephone ringing. A voice on the other end identified himself as the buyer of the portraits and asked him to come visit the palace. When Cedric asked what royal family had bought his work, the buyer replied that it was "a ridiculous question" because "there is only one Royal Family on Saturn!"

Ames was butler to Melville H. Dodworth. When Dodworth refused to pay for the portrait Chalmers had painted, he ordered Ames to show Chalmers out of his house.
