Powers/Abilities: Bull was in good physical condition. He carried a pistol. He was trained as a ship's captain and piloted his craft through treacherous jungle rivers. The vessel included a hidden radio set that Bull operated to keep in touch with other Communist agents.

History:
(Jann of the Jungle I#9/3 (fb) - BTS) - Bull was a criminal originally from Chicago, Illinois. Bull took work as a ship's captain around the area of the Congo River but longed to earn enough money to return to the USA. At some point, Bull began working as a Communist agent in the hopes of securing more money. Having discovered a large uranium mine, the Communists enlisted Bull to help dissuade others from exploring the swampland around the mine, claiming it was "haunted." To help achieve this, the Communists used a film projector to project images of "ghostly" gorillas and lions. Bull was promised enough money to afford his return to Chicago. Hunter Cliff Mason was sent to explore the rumors of radium being available in the swamp. Mason had also heard rumors that Bull was working for the Communists. Cliff hired Bull to bring him to the haunted swamp.

(Jann of the Jungle I#9/3) - Bull piloted Cliff down river to the "haunted" swamp. He attempted to frighten Cliff, suggesting he should turn back, claiming the swamp was truly haunted, but Cliff was unafraid. Cliff directly accused Bull of being a Communist agent but when he demanded Bull admit it, Bull retorted "That's your guess, Mason!" Regardless, Bull vowed that Cliff wouldn't come out of the swamp alive so he wasn't afraid of him. As soon as Cliff disembarked his boat and headed into the swamp, Bull used his hidden radio to contact Communist agents working out of the secret radium mine. Bull advised the other agents not to kill Cliff but instead to unnerve him so that they wouldn't risk being executed for Cliff's murder. The other agents tried to frighten Cliff with the film projector but Cliff didn't believe in ghosts and wasn't frightened for even a moment. As Cliff began to fight the other agents, one of them radioed a warning to Bull.

    By the time Bull arrived, he found Cliff exploring the radium mine. Bull drew his pistol on Cliff. When Cliff again remarked that Bull was a Communist agent, Bull retorted "So what? They pay me good!" Cliff quickly jumped over a barrel of dirt and hid behind it. Although Bull was briefly blinded by the cloud of dirt, he steadied himself, intending to shoot through the wooden barrel to kill Cliff.

    Suddenly, Bull saw the "ghosts" appear again. He assumed someone had turned on the film projector again but then noticed the projector wasn't turned on. Ghostly lions and gorillas began to encircle Bull, frightening him. Bull fell to his knees and begged Cliff Mason for his help, telling him the swamp was truly haunted and wishing for his help to escape them. However, Mason didn't see the ghosts and thought Bull's mind had snapped. Bull surrendered to Mason, who brought him and the other two spies back to Bull's boat then headed back to civilization.

    The first time I glanced over this story I thought the "ghost" animals were albinos, possibly due to exposure to the radium, but as the narration- and Cliff's inability to perceive them- bear out, they really were ghostly animals.

Ghosts of lions and gorillas appeared to Bull in the so-called "haunted swamp." At first Bull thought these animals were being projected from the Communists' film projector but discovered the projector wasn't even turned on. These ghosts were only visible to Bull, as Cliff Mason did not perceive their presence. Horrified at their accusatory visages, Bull was frightened into surrendering to Cliff. When the Communists exited the swamp, the ghosts continued to linger over the swamp, intent on preventing man's greed from intruding there again.
