History: (Wasp#3 - BTS) - On Earth-616, the Creature from Kosmos trapped the two Wasps (Janet and Nadia Van Dyne) and Edwin Jarvis in the world of their worst fears (mirroring reality-53523), so that it could torture them and feast on their souls.
(Wasp#3) - Janet Van Dyne found her father Vernon dead, and her first reaction was to call someone he trusted from work, but she could not think of anyone as Ant-Man/Hank Pym did not exist in this world. A police detective questioned Janet, considering her to be the prime suspect. Janet explained her alibi, but the detective revealed that an unusual acid was found in Vernon's system, suggesting that Janet might have poisoned him. Van Dyne family attorney Rosalind Sharpe interrupted the interrogation and got Janet out of it, but noted that in addition to the motive, the means, and the opportunity, Janet had a cold and merciless look on her face. Janet confirmed that she had no mercy for whoever killed her father's and sought to avenge him, something Sharpe warned her against.
When the news broadcasts showed the Creature from Kosmos towering over the city and shrugging off artillery shells fired by the military, Janet recognized the Creature's green mist as the same as what she had seen in her father's library after finding his body. Realizing that the Creature was an acid-based form and thus vulnerable to alkali, Janet rushed to purchase a truck of ammonia, then rigged it with rope to direct the driverless and leaking truck towards the Creature. On the contact with ammonia, the Creature began to dissolve, and Janet presented herself to the detective who had interrogated her earlier to tell him that the Creature's remains would match the acid of that killer her father. Boasting of what she had done to stop the Creature, Janet decided to call herself "the Avenger."
Iron Man, Thor, and the Hulk approached Janet to invite her into their newly formed team. Janet accepted the invitation but told the men that the name "Avenger" was already taken, so the team became known as the Operatives instead.
The Operatives grew to include the Black Knight, Hercules, Namor, Doctor Druid, and Monica Rambeau. Janet found it taxing to manage their egos and considered stepping away and letting Monica take the leadership. Janet was on the phone with Dane Whitman when an assassin appeared in her window.
(Wasp#4) - Janet was surprised to find that she knew the assassin's face despite never meeting her before. The assassin introduced herself as the Orphan, and Janet unexpectedly hugged her. The Orphan briefly tried to carry out her mission before accepting that she knew Janet as well.
(Wasp#4 - BTS) - At this moment, Jarvis-616 walked in through the door, having fully broken from the Creature's mental projecting, and congratulated the two women on doing the same. Their connection to the reality-53523 started to dissolve around them as they saw their true nature. Unable to digest its victims, the Creature spat them back on into the real world on Earth-616.
Comments: Created by Al Ewing and Kasia Nie.Wasp#3-4 depicts a simulated world purposefully created by the Creature from Kosmos to torture the Wasps (and later Jarvis) with their worst fears. Each of the three victims was originally trapped in their own subworld, which were only merged into one after they became too difficult for Creature to maintain separately. Further evidence to the false nature of the world is seen in its surfaces, as every wall, floor, and ceiling has the same porous, slimy texture of Creature itself. However, the history of the world in which Hank Pym had never existed still mirrors an alternate reality in the infinite Multiverse, specifically reality-53523, although presumably within it everything is not actually made of slime.
Janet's physical characteristics are taken from her Earth-616 counterpart.
