History:
(True Western I#2 (fb) - BTS) - The Apache Kid was born in October,
1854. He once served as a scout for the U.S. Army but then turned
renegade, becoming a leader of a gang of fellow Apache who waged a
private war against White settlers in Arizona. When his gang was
captured by Sheriff Glen Reynolds in 1891, the Apache Kid broke them
out of prison and killed Sheriff Reynolds.
(True Western I#2) - While Hualpai Clarke's posse pursued them, the Apache Kid and his gang came across the prospector Old Pete in the desert and shot him to death. Two days later, the Kid and his gang ambushed a barge on the Gila River and killed Hank and his fellow bargeman. A week later, the Apache Kid led his gang in an assault on a covered wagon. They killed a woman and her son, leaving behind an infant in the wreckage of the wagon. Later, they killed a miner in the desert.
As the Apache Kid and his gang rested one night, Clarke's posse caught up to them. The posse waited for them to go to sleep then descended into their camp and silently confined each of the Kid's gang. However, when Clarke approached the Apache Kid himself to capture him, the Kid silently awoke and realized the danger he was in. As Clarke hovered over him, the Kid leaned forward and struck his knife into Clarke's chest. Leaping on his horse, the Apache Kid escaped but his entire gang were arrested by the posse. Clarke survived the chest wound while his posse delivered the Kid's five gang members to the law. Once they were in their cell, three of the Kid's men hanged themselves from the rafters while the other two blocked the window to prevent outside interference. The following day, the remaining two gang members were sentenced to death and hanged.
The Apache Kid then sought revenge on Clarke for the deaths of his gang. The Apache Kid pursued him to a cabin where he was recuperating from the knife wound. The Apache Kid concealed himself in the rocks nearby and prepared to snipe his foe. When Clarke's friend John Scanlon emerged from the cabin to collect firewood, the Apache Kid mistook him for Clarke and killed him with a single bullet.
Clarke emerged from the cabin with his rifle and the two men stalked each other. When they finally came within sight of each other, they both hesitated to use their rifles, each knowing their rifle contained just one shot and firing would give the other man an advantage. In a stalemate, they stood glaring at each other for hours until the sun set. In the darkness, they set aside their rifles and stalked each other in the dark with knives. The Apache Kid leaped upon Clarke to stab him but Clarke caught his stabbing arm by the wrist and flung him over his shoulder then plunged his own knife into the Apache Kid's heart. The Apache Kid's body tumbled down from the ravine where they had fought and Clarke decided to let his body lie where it fell. The Kid died on January 15, 1892.

This is a fictionalized version of the true story of the Apache Kid (Haskay-bay-nay-ntayl). You can learn about him in his Wikipedia biography. As noted there, the actual death of the Apache Kid is difficult to determine because different people in different years kept claiming they were the one to kill him.

Bennet was a member of Hualpai Clarke's posse that pursued the Apache Kid. After finding a covered wagon that the Apache Kid had assaulted, leaving alive only a baby, Clarke told Bennet to take charge of the baby and bring the child to the nearest town.

Hualpai Clarke led the posse that pursued the Apache Kid. He was originally motivated to get the Apache Kid after he murdered his friend Sheriff Reynolds. Clarke's posse eventually caught up to the Apache Kid's gang in the Arizona desert and they silently captured most of the gang while they were asleep but as Clarke was hovering over the Kid, the Kid awoke and stabbed Clarke in the chest. Clarke survived the wound but was badly hurt. He and his men delivered the Kid's five gang members to the law; three of them took their own lives in their cell and the other two were hanged to death. Clarke retired to a cabin with his friend John Scanlon to recover from the stab wound but the Apache Kid was now in pursuit of him for revenge and killed Scanlon, mistaking him for Clarke from a distance. Determined to end their vendetta, Clarke exited the cabin and pursued the Apache Kid, both men armed with a single-shot rifle. Unable to gain the advantage over each other, they waited until dark then set aside their rifles to fight in the dark with knives. When the Apache Kid dove at him with his knife, Clarke caught him by the wrist and flung him over his shoulder, stabbed the Apache Kid in the heart, then flung his remains over the ravine where they had been fighting. Clarke declared he'd settled the score for Sheriff Reynolds and the others who had been killed and left the Apache Kid's remains to lie where they fell.

Hank was a bargeman who, with another man, operated a barge across the Gila River in Arizona. He was attacked by the Apache Kid and his gang, who murdered both Hank and his fellow bargeman.

Old Pete was a prospector in Arizona. He was camped by his fire when the Apache Kid assaulted and killed him. His body was found by Hualpai Clarke.

Sheriff Glen Reynolds was a lawman whom the Apache Kid killed when breaking his gang out of prison. Sheriff Reynolds was a friend to Hualpai Clarke and he vowed to have his revenge upon the Apache Kid.

John Scanlon was a member of Hualpai Clarke's posse and his closest aide. When Clarke was recuperating from the injury inflicted upon him by the Apache Kid, Scanlon remained with Clarke in cabin to watch over his care. One day while fetching firewood for the cabin, Scanlon was mistaken for the Apache Kid who shot him to death while concealed in nearby rocks.
