Powers/Abilities: The Ani-Mator was a techno-organic, demonic being but what superhuman powers this status granted him, if any, was unrevealed.

    Prior to his transformation, the Ani-Mator possessed a genius-level knowledge of genetics, especially in regards to gene-splicing and selective breeding. He also possessed extensive medical knowledge in relation to the field of pharmaceuticals.

    The Ani-Mator had access to a large island base equipped with sophisticated machinery capable of altering the genetic code of other beings. During his time employed by the Right, the Ani-Mator had access to the databases within the organization's computer systems.

    The Ani-Mator was a certified lunatic, prone to paranoid ranting and raving, erratic behavior and sudden outbursts of physical violence.

(Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: Update '89#1 - Ani-Mator entry - BTS) - Dr. Frederick Animus was presumably born a citizen of the United States and years later as an adult, he was presumed single.

(New Mutants I#60 (fb) - BTS) - Dr. Animus was employed at a university as a medical research scientist. Eventually, Dr. Animus' curiosity got the better of him and he began to ignore the medical research he had been hired to provide, instead focusing on research concerning mutations.

(Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: Update '89#1 - Ani-Mator entry - BTS) - His attention becoming solely on mutation research, Animus presumably neglected to do the necessary work to ensure the efficacy of certain medications.

(New Mutants I#60 (fb) - BTS) - In an effort to continue his research into mutations, Dr. Animus faked results on certain medications' efficacy, leading to the deaths of some medical patients. As a result, Dr. Animus' research methods were checked and the fake results were discovered, leading to Animus' arrest and imprisonment. While in jail, Dr. Animus was discovered by Cmdr. Cameron Hodge of the anti-mutant Right organization.

(New Mutants I#59 (fb) - BTS) - The insane geneticist Dr. Animus aligned himself with the Right.

(New Mutants I#60 (fb) - BTS) - The Right contracted Animus to use his genetic knowledge to discover a way to end mutations altogether, freeing him from his loathsome prison and supplying him with animal test subjects.

(New Mutants I#59 (fb) - BTS) - Dr. Animus established an otherwise deserted island base, Paradise, where he began calling himself the Ani-Mator and sought to genetically create humanoid animals he called Ani-Mates using his own blood via gene-splicing.

(Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: Update '89#1 - Ani-Mator entry - BTS) - Animus kept his identity as the Ani-Mator a secret and he also used the process of selective breeding to create additional Ani-Mates. Over a period of time, the Ani-Mator did not regularly engage in exercise.

(New Mutants I#60 (fb) - BTS) - The Ani-Mator chose the animals for his first batch of Ani-Mates for their fierceness in preparation for the inevitable quarrel with the Right over his experiments.

(New Mutants I#59 (fb) - BTS) - Under the guise of providing research to the Right, the Ani-Mator established an island law among his Ani-Mates to kill all strangers. In an effort to root out non-useful Ani-Mates, the Ani-Mator developed a series of tests and trained the Ani-Mates with food to go willingly into his tests to determine whether they lived or died. Eventually, Bird-Brain, an Ani-Mate the Ani-Mator considered his masterpiece, escaped into the world at large, fearful of the Ani-Mator's testing maze.

(New Mutants III#39 (fb)) - At some point, the Ani-Mator decided to rewrite a mutant genetic virus to force it to back up his personality in viral form that would recreate the Ani-Mator's body out of available genetic material and reload his personality into the new body should he ever perish.

(New Mutants I#59) - The Ani-Mator was working on the Lot F batch of Ani-Mates, noting their nicely developed phalanges but disappointing parietal bone and overdeveloped cerebellum. Noticing the equally overdeveloped occipital lobe that would give the Ani-Mates the ability to dream, the raving Ani-Mator proclaimed Lot F to be a cursed batch, far too human than animal. He was soon interrupted by Bolivar Littlemouse, a mouse-like Ani-Mate who brought the Ani-Mator a globe containing a developing Ani-Mate. The Ani-Mator examined the globe and began ranting about whether or not the developing Ani-Mate would exhibit the same defects as his "water-baby." He soon determined that it would and did and dramatically expressed woe over "having" to destroy another lot of Ani-Mates but ultimately decided to wait to see how the testing of Lot E would go before destroying Lot F. Imagining that the developing Ani-Mate was speaking to him about unfair the testing process was, the Ani-Mator exclaimed that no one ever said creation would be fair before being interrupted by the frog-like Bufo, who pointed out intruders on the Ani-Mator's island. The Ani-Mator commended Bufo on his observations, promising an extra ration of flies for him as he ranted about human "serpents" invading his island. Assuming that Cmdr. Cameron Hodge and the Right had discovered his secret experiments, the Ani-Mator turned on his monitors and instead noticed the invaders to be the New Mutants. Immediately ordering the Ani-Mates to murder the New Mutants, the Ani-Mator paused when the Ani-Mates did not do as instructed, soon discovering that the previously Bird-Brain was with the New Mutants. Considering Bird-Brain a sinner that had led strangers into his paradise, the Ani-Mator accessed the Right's computer database to determine the New Mutants' identities then called the Right's headquarters to report an invasion of mutants in an attempt to keep the Right away from his island, promising to report back when all was clear.

      The Ani-Mator then began enacting his plan to capture the New Mutants and utilize their blood to create new and improved Ani-Mates. Sufficiently focused on his new mission, the Ani-Mator tossed the globe housing a developing Ani-Mate to the ground, shattering it, and he ordered Bufo and Bolivar Littlemouse to destroy Lot F of Ani-Mates, feeling as if he had no further use of the lot. He then went downstairs, ranting about how the next testing would be like no other lot of Ani-Mates had experienced. A short time later, the Ani-Mator sounded the testing alarm to summon all of the current Ani-Mates to the testing maze. The New Mutants stopped Bird-Brain from going to the maze and learned from Bird-Brain his intent to rescue the Ani-Mates by stopping the Ani-Mator. Deciding to aid Bird-Brain in his quest, the New Mutants accompanied him into the Ani-Mator's testing maze, where they were eventually confronted with large Ani-Mates. Mirage scared most of them by conjuring an image of the angry Ani-Mator but the real Ani-Mator appeared moments after the New Mutants had been defeated and ordered the Ani-Mates to bring the New Mutants and any surviving tested Ani-Mates to his laboratory.

    Once the captive New Mutants were brought before him in his lab, the insane Ani-Mator ranted until the surviving Ani-Mates including Bird-Brain were also brought before him. Raving that the clothed Bird-Brain had to earn his name by knowing evil and how knowing evil was to become man, the Ani-Mator began spouting portions of Biblical stories about evil and revealed how his tests were designed for the Ani-Mates to prove themselves worthy of a name and survival but never as men. When Wolfsbane argued that Bird-Brain already had a name and was much than a mere animal, the Ani-Mator ordered one of his Ani-Mates to silence Wolfsbane by knocking her out. The Ani-Mator then announced that the Ani-Mates that had survived his testing this time would not be given names or clothing because they had chosen to disobey him by allowing strangers onto the island. Proclaiming the punishment for their transgressions would be death, the Ani-Mator berated Bird-Brain, accusing him of leading the other Ani-Mates to their own deaths as he had dead Ani-Mates thrown on the ground in front of Bird-Brain. When Bird-Brain prayed for his fallen friends, the angry Ani-Mator demanded to know what Bird-Brain was saying before tearing the New Mutants uniform off of Bird-Brain and ordering all of the Ani-Mates destroyed.

(New Mutants I#60) - The raving Ani-Mator manhandled Bird-Brain, exclaiming that Bird-Brain didn't deserve a name before fiercely attacking the creature. Attempting to help Bird-Brain, Mirage conjured up an image of the Ani-Mator's worst fear, that of Cmdr. Hodge of the Right arriving to discover the Ani-Mator's experiments. Insisting to the illusion that he had done nothing wrong and that his allegiance was to the Right, the Ani-Mator soon realized Hodge was not real when one of the Ani-Mates walked through the illusion. Deducing Mirage's involvement, the Ani-Mator announced his plans to utilize the New Mutants as the progenitors of his next batch of Ani-Mates, which he planned to use to deliver humanity from drudgery. He then ordered the loyal Ani-Mates to cage the New Mutants in his laboratory as he walked away, quickly changing his mind to allow Bird-Brain to accompany the New Mutants to see what his disobedience had wrought. The New Mutants were subsequently placed in glass cylinders and, feeling as if the batch of Ani-Mates created using the New Mutants' blood would be superior, he ordered the destruction of the developing Lot G of Ani-Mates. When an Ani-Mate parrot mimicked the Ani-Mator's orders, the crazed Ani-Mator hurled the parrot into a glass cylinder, killing it as he demanded to know who had taught the parrot to speak.

    As the Ani-Mator began destroying all of the developing Ani-Mates, Bufo interrupted him to point out an incoming call. The Ani-Mator took the call, soon revealed to be from Cmdr. Hodge, and the nervous Ani-Mator claimed he was still dealing with the mutant intruders. Confronting the Ani-Mator about his earlier search into the Right's database regarding the New Mutants, Hodge questioned whether the Ani-Mator was still working towards finding a way to end all mutations. Hodge also reminded the Ani-Mator how the Right had freed him from prison and warned the Ani-Mator against faking results or lying to them. The Ani-Mator insisted he was not lying nor faking results and when Hodge questioned the strange headgear his hired scientist was wearing, the Ani-Mator claimed he was wearing the headgear in jest. The Ani-Mator then quickly hung up the call, suggesting Hodge stay away from Paradise for his own safety, but Hodge secretly decided to pay Paradise a visit to ensure the New Mutants would not escape. The Ani-Mator then put his headgear back on and dismissed Hodge as a lout, at which point Magik questioned whether the Ani-Mator was supposed to making his Ani-Mates. Admitting that he most certainly was not supposed to be making animal-men, the Ani-Mator claimed the Ani-Mates were not incompatible with the Right's goal, as each Ani-Mates could be trained with specific specialties. He then began ranting that he would be famous and wealthy once the Ani-Mates were introduced to the world as slave labor. Admitting that he had chose the first Ani-Mates for fierceness due to his expected disagreement with the Right over his experiments, the Ani-Mator decided to completely destroy his laboratory and abscond with the New Mutants. He then ordered Bird-Brain sent to the testing maze to be killed and gloated about creating new Ani-Mates equipped with the New Mutants' powers.

    The Ani-Mator then ordered the New Mutants to be taken to his ship, promising to follow after setting the self-destruct sequence on his laboratory computers. When the New Mutants tricked the loyal Ani-Mates into dropping the glass cylinders containing them, the Ani-Mator summoned reinforcements to help recapture the escaped New Mutants. The New Mutants made quick work of the loyal Ani-Mates and when the Ani-Mator attempted to flee to his ship, Cypher tackled him and demanded he shut off the self-destruct sequence. When the Ani-Mator admitted he didn't know how, Cypher managed to stop it himself using his mutant language powers with seconds to spare. Hodge and the Right arrived moments later, tranquilizing the New Mutants, and the Ani-Mator attempted to flee in the scuffle, only to be captured by one of the Right and turned over to Hodge. Hodge asked why the Ani-Mator was wearing a strange costume and demanded to know why his scientist could not follow orders. The insane Ani-Mator accused Hodge of lying to him by showing up unannounced but Hodge punched the Ani-Mator aside, revealing his intent to utilize the New Mutants for the Right's own ends. The Ani-Mator asked for his glasses to see proof that Hodge had not killed the New Mutants and when Bufo rushed to provide his master his glasses, Hodge shot Bufo dead. Hodge then ordered all of the Ani-Mates exterminated but the Ani-Mates freed the New Mutants and during the ensuing battle between the New Mutants, the Right and the Ani-Mates, the Ani-Mator grabbed a handgun and escaped Hodge's plane. Pulling a gun on Wolfsbane, the Ani-Mator fired but Cypher dove in the way to save Wolfsbane, taking the bullets himself. Bird-Brain then flew down and knocked the gun from the Ani-Mator's hand. As the Ani-Mator and Bird-Brain fought one another, Hodge and the Right opted to escape, bombing the island as they departed. Bird-Brain ultimately defeated the Ani-Mator and held high the Ani-Mator's headgear as a trophy.

    When the New Mutants realized Cypher had been shot dead, the defeated Ani-Mator gloated about making Cypher pay and Magik trapped the Ani-Mator in a teleportation disc. Grabbing the Ani-Mator by the neck, Magik and brandished the Ani-Mator's gun, at which point the Ani-Mator claimed he hadn't killed Cypher on purpose and that he had intended to kill Wolfsbane instead. When the Ani-Mator laughed that perhaps Cypher wanted to die, Magik put the gun to the Ani-Mator's head but Wolfsbane begged for Magik not to kill. Magik instead sent the Ani-Mator through her teleportational disc into the Otherplace realm, where she suggested he could be food for the demons there.

(New Mutants I#64 - BTS) - Mourning Cypher's death, the emotional Wolfsbane put herself through a Danger Room simulation of the events leading up to Cypher's death, including a simulated Ani-Mator firing his handgun at her. In the simulation, Wolfsbane kicked the simulated Cypher out of the way, saving him and directing the guns of the Right soldier she was fighting to fire on the Ani-Mator, killing him instead.

(New Mutants I#65 (fb) - BTS) - Once within Otherplace, the Ani-Mator was transformed into a techno-organic demon by the demon S'ym.

(New Mutants I#65) - When Magik departed Otherplace with her Soulsword to avenge the seeming death of her brother, Colossus, the increasingly powerful S'ym witnessed Magik departing and monologued to the Ani-Mator and his other techno-organic agents a plan to open a large portal to Otherplace.

(X-Men: Earth's Mutant Heroes - Bird-Brain entry - BTS) - Bird-Brain used some of the Ani-Mator's old machinery to restore the villainous Condor back to a semblance of his human form.

(X-Force I Annual#3 (fb) - BTS) - After the terrorist Mutant Liberation Front's Caribbean headquarters was destroyed by the mutant X-Force team, the MLF moved to the Ani-Mator's abandoned facility on Paradise.

(X-Force I Annual#3 - BTS) - During a training session with the MLF, Danielle Moonstar (formerly the New Mutants' Mirage) thought about how the MLF had taken over the Ani-Mator's old laboratory and how his experiments, the Ani-Mates, were scared of the MLF.

(New Mutants: Truth or Death#2 - BTS) - When the time-displaced younger New Mutants met their older counterparts, the older Wolfsbane opted to stop the time-displaced Cypher from learning the truth of his own death at the hands of the Ani-Mator.

(New Mutants III#40 (fb) - BTS) - At some point, the Ani-Mator died.

(New Mutants III#39 (fb) - BTS) - Upon the Ani-Mator's death, the viral backup of the Ani-Mator's personality released on Paradise and began trying to reconstitute the Ani-Mator's body using any genetic material it could assimilate. Dubbed the Virusplague, it infected many of the Ani-Mates.

(New Mutants III#39 - BTS) - After the resurrected Cypher sought to confront the circumstances of his own death at the hands of the Ani-Mator, the New Mutants returned to Paradise, where all but Warlock were infected by the Virusplague. Suspecting the Virusplague to be a creation of the Ani-Mator, Warlock led the sickened New Warriors to the Ani-Mator's old laboratory in hopes of finding a cure. Once inside the lab, Cypher and Warlock reviewed the Ani-Mator's old computer files and found video footage of the Ani-Mator's creating a genetic virus from his blood. Deducing that the Ani-Mator had created the Virusplague to back up his own personality in a new genetic body should he ever die, Cypher began trying to brainstorm a solution when the Virusplague entered the lab in the giant, partially-reconstituted form of the Ani-Mator. 

(New Mutants III#40 - BTS) - Warlock merged with the Virusplague-infected Cypher to prevent him from being killed once more by the Ani-Mator and as the Warlock/Cypher physically fought the Virusplague, they mentally began brainstorming a way to destroy the Virusplague. During the battle, Warlock reminded the fearful Cypher that the Virusplague was not truly a resurrected Ani-Mator but rather, a virus attempting to transform itself into the Ani-Mator. Cypher ultimately deduced that Warlock's Transmode Virus might be able to overcome the Virusplague since it held his own Virusplague infection at bay and when Warlock/Cypher injected the Virusplague with the Transmode Virus, Cypher determined that the Virusplague itself was not created by the Ani-Mator but rather, reprogrammed to act as a viral backup for the insane geneticist. Realizing that the Virusplague was only absorbing genetic material to recreate the Ani-Mator because it had been programmed to do so, Cypher devised a way to use the Transmode Virus to erase the Ani-Mator's programming from the Virusplague, restoring the virus' inherent benign nature.

(New Mutants III#41 - BTS) - Blink visited the New Mutants and Danielle Moonstar revealed to Blink how many of the team were down due to the horrible nature of their recent battle on Paradise with a nearly-reconstituted Ani-Mator.

(New Mutants III#46 - BTS) - While battling Earth-12934's True/Friend, Earth-616's Cypher brought Earth-295's X-Man into his mind, explaining how he had learned that trick while merged with Warlock during their battle with the partially-reconstituted Ani-Mator before disrupting True/Friend's latent control of the Transmode Virus.

    New Mutants I#59 at one point refers to the Ani-Mator as Dr. Animus and the OHotMU: Update '89#1 entry on the Ani-Mator confirms the Ani-Mator's full name to be Dr. Frederick Animus. However, the Gamer's Handbook of the Marvel Universe MU5, published by TSR with Marvel's approval, license and contributions, has an entry on the Ani-Mator titled "Doctor Animus" and it states that Dr. Animus' real name is lost knowledge, suggesting that Dr. Animus is not his real name. It's unclear whether the Update '89 or Gamer's Handbook was published first since the Gamer's Handbook does not have a month listed for publication. Both were published in 1989. I think both books could be true, however, and perhaps Frederick Animus is indeed the Ani-Mator's real name but public knowledge of that being his real name is what is lost, possibly even to the insane Ani-Mator himself...

    Bird-Brain's usage of the Ani-Mator's machinery to restore Condor occurred in Nova II#4-5 but the Ani-Mator was not mentioned by name in either of those issues, the true confirmation by name not being directly confirmed until Bird-Brain's modern OHotMU entry in X-Men: Earth's Mutant Heroes.

    It's kind of a shame that the Ani-Mator's status as a techno-organic demon was never followed up on. We see him in techno-organic form for all of one panel in New Mutants I#65 and it's never brought up again. His subsequent OHotMU: Update '89#1 entry makes no mention of him becoming a techno-organic demon (though the 1989 Gamer's Handbook of the Marvel Universe MU5 does suggest the possibility of such a transformation) then New Mutants III#39-40 just unceremoniously states that he died, leading the story of the Virusplague being programmed to transform itself into a backup Ani-Mator.

    This profile was completed on 3/19/2026 but its publication was delayed, as it was intended for the Appendix's 25th anniversary celebratory event.
