ALPHA BEAM APPARATUS

Classification: Terrestrial technology

Creator: Mister Fantastic (Reed Richards)

User/Possessors: Invisible Girl (Susan Storm Richards), Mister Fantastic (Reed Richards)

First Appearance: Silver Surfer II#1 (1982)

Powers/Abilities/Functions: The Alpha Beam Apparatus was a large module which transmitted energy to a handheld rifle-like weapon which could then emit a laser beam made of alpha rays. This alpha beam could pierce the barrier which Galactus had used to imprison the Silver Surfer on Earth but only at a particular planetary alignment.

History:

(Silver Surfer II#1) - As the Silver Surfer was attempting another futile effort at breaking through Galactus' barrier that imprisoned him on Earth he saw a beam from Reed Richards' Alpha Beam Apparatus strike the barrier and cause it to flutter. Flying down to the Baxter Building, the Surfer found the Fantastic Four were setting up the Alpha Beam Apparatus on the roof of their building. Reed hoped that this device would liberate the Silver Surfer from Earth but cautioned him that they would have only one opportunity to use it during the planetary alignment and afterward if the Silver Surfer should return to Earth the barrier would again imprison him.

Mister Fantastic took the alpha beam projector with him aboard the Fantasticar which the Thing piloted as they flew to the barrier. The Invisible Girl remained with the Alpha Beam Apparatus on the Baxter Building to send the energy to Reed's device. When the moment was right there were merely 3 seconds in which the barrier would be open. As Mister Fantastic fired his alpha beam at the barrier, the Silver Surfer travelled alongside the beam matching his speed to it. By doing so, the Silver Surfer pierced the barrier.

Mister Fantastic and the Thing returned to Earth hoping the Silver Surfer would be free for good but circumstances later forced the Silver Surfer to return in order to aid his lover Shalla-Bal.
