SPACE PHANTOM'S SHRINKING RAY

Classification: Extradimensional (Limbo / Space Phantom) weapon

Creator: Unrevealed, presumably the Space Phantom

User/Possessors: The Space Phantom

First Appearance: Avengers I#107 (January, 1973)

Powers/Abilities/Functions: The Space Phantom's Shrinking Ray could emit rays capable of shrinking most anything caught in the path of its rays. The ray projectors were controlled via a large computer console inside the Shrinking Ray's control room.

History:
(Avengers I#107 (fb)) - When Captain America and his crimefighting partner Bucky (Rick Jones) invaded a secret base of the terrorist Hydra organization, Hydra's Supreme Hydra (secretly the extraterrestrial Space Phantom that had often battled the Avengers) had the two heroes led into a room where he activated his Shrinking Ray to shrink the heroes down to size. Despite being shrunk down in size, Captain America and Bucky ran beneath the Shrinking Ray machine itself and into the Ray's control room. Once inside, Captain America hit the Supreme Hydra with his shield to distract him long enough for Cap to turn the dials on the Shrinking Ray's computer console, restoring himself and Bucky to their proper sizes. Admitting that he had expected the two heroes to triumph over his Shrinking Ray, the Supreme Hydra was quickly beaten by Captain America and unmasked as the Space Phantom.

Comments: Created by Steve Englehart, Jim Starlin, George Tuska and Dave Cockrum.

It wasn't clear if the Space Phantom created the Shrinking Ray himself or not. He did refer to it as "his" technology but that could mean technology belonging to him or technology he created. It does appear to be Space Phantom technology.
