Twin engines in the rear of the vessel can propel the craft through the air, water or outer space. They are designed to function in extreme environments, including the bottom of the ocean's floor and in outer space. Each craft has powerful floodlights to illuminate their surroundings underwater.
History:
(Black Panther III#11) - T'Challa had the first of the Mother Ships
(the N'Yami) parked in Manhattan's East River. When he needed to return
to Wakanda to prevent a coup by Achebe, he guided his allies Monica
Lynne, Nakia, Okoye, Everett K. Ross, Sgt. Tork and Zuri to the N'Yami.
The Black Panther was also feigning an alliance with his foe White Wolf
and his Hatut Zeraze followers. T'Challa guided the White Wolf and his
men aboard the N'Yami then immediately stunned all of them. Raising the
N'Yami from the East River, T'Challa had it flown back to Wakanda. As
Achebe had activated the robotic Prowlers to defend himself, T'Challa
and his allies exited the N'Yami aboard Talon fighter crafts from the
N'Yami's hangar and the Talons engaged the Prowlers in combat.
(Black Panther III#27) - At least six N'Yami-Class Mother Ships were dispatched to Deviant Lemuria, their serial numbers including WNY3, WNY6 and WNY7. As rumors of their deployment spread around the world, tensions grew among other nations. The Deviant priest-lord Ghaur made an appearance on television's Nightline to share footage of the vessels in an attempt to manipulate the politics surrounding his nation's conflict with Wakanda, claiming Lemuria sought a diplomatic solution to the crisis and reminding the public that the Deviants had a mutual defense pact with Latveria and Genosha. To exacerbate the situation, the Black Panther's enemies White Wolf and Klaw made it appear as if one of the vessels had opened fire on the U.S.S. Roussos aircraft carrier, thus inflaming tensions with the United States.
(Black Panther III#28) - Atlantis dispatched their own vessels to surround the N'Yami-Class Mother Ships and warned if Wakanda opened fire, the Atlanteans would attack them. Unfortunately for all concerned, Klaw invaded Lemuria and readied the city's missile launchers to open fire. The crews of the N'Yami-Class Mother Ships opened fire on the Atlantean ships to disable their weapons then fired on the Lemurian missile silos to prevent them from launching. Consequently, the firefight T'Challa had hoped to prevent had begun.
(Black Panther III#29) - The N'Yami-Class Mother Ships continued to battle the Atlanteans and the Lemurians. One of the Mother Ships was disabled during the clash. Finally, Prince Namor ordered the Atlanteans to withdraw. As T'Challa used diplomacy to resolve the conflict with the Deviants, the remaining Mother Ships were able to disengage.
Comments: Created by Christopher Priest, Mark Bright and Nelson DeCastro.
The vessel seen in Black Panther III#11 was simply "the N'Yami"; Black Panther III#27 established all vessels of that configuration are "N'Yami-Class." The N'Yami Class is named for T'Chaka's first wife, the mother of T'Challa.
