History:

(Frankie and Lana Comics#12/4 (fb) - BTS) - Oakland school student Melvin (nicknamed "Muscles") engaged heavily in weightlifting for upper body strength. He wore tight clothing to showcase his muscular physique and many girls admired him for his body and movie star good looks, although he showed no interest in any girl.

(Frankie and Lana Comics#12/4) - Smitten by him, fellow student Cindy was determined to make Muscles notice her and gave him the "glamor treatment." She tried different outfits over several days at school; the only one that got a (shocked) reaction from him was a ball gown, but this earned Cindy detention. Later, she lounged on her doorstep in slouchy casual clothes, thinking Muscles must be a woman-hater for ignoring her advances, but then Muscles passed by and admired her "intelligent" dress sense. He invited her over to help working on his house and she quickly agreed. She doused herself in perfume, which he ignored, and gave her a paper bag to protect her hair while she painted an outside wall. He assigned her tasks to fix the fence and mow the lawn, happy with her apparent practical attitude, but exhausted she left him alone.

A bit early for the stereotype, but is it just me or is there a faint ping on the old gaydar here? Maybe asexual? He didn't hang around the straight guys either.

Hm. Interesting era. If a guy didn't respond to young women's advances, then he was a "woman-hater"???
