(Love Romances I#82 (fb)) - Millie was a young woman who lived in Meadowood with her parents and Aunt Libby. Millie began dating young men in her town, including Luke, who took her for a ride on a motorcycle. But when Luke proposed to Millie, she turned him down. Then she dated Jess, but turned him down when he proposed to her. Millie went on to date many other boys whom she had a good time with, but turned down each proposal.
(Love Romances I#82) - One night, Millie went square dancing with Ed. She had a good time but when Ed brought her home, he proposed to her, but she replied that she needed more time in order to give him an answer. Stepping inside her home, Millie found her parents and Aunt Libby waiting in the parlor. Her mother asked if Ed had proposed and Millie answered that he had, but despite her family's insistence that Ed would be a good husband for her, Millie told them she wasn't sure about marrying Ed. Her mother remarked that Millie had turned down so many boys that "there won't any left pretty soon!" When her father asked what she was waiting for, Millie again said she didn't know.
Millie thought back over the various men she'd briefly dated and whose proposals she'd refused, realizing she liked them but didn't love them. She told herself she was waiting for the right man, but after her parents words she wondered if the right man would ever arrive.
One day, Millie was walking through town when she bumped into Steve and dropped her purse. Steve helped collect her fallen items and introduced himself, explaining he was a veterinarian who was taking a course at the town's agricultural school. Steve was immediately taken with Millie and after checking to see if she was married or engaged, invited her to lunch. When he asked if she liked animals she affirmed she loved them.
In the days that followed Millie began dating Steve, with their dates including a horseback riding trip. Once again she was enjoying her dates but she feared that if he proposed she might feel the same hesitation she'd always felt before. However, one night Steve took her in his arms and proposed to her and she realized in that moment he was the right man and she accepted the proposal.
