overexerting himself in combat, Magneto permanently lost half his power.
Some time before his death, his spine was crushed, forcing him to rely
on a wheelchair.

History:
(X-Men II#40 (fb) - BTS) - Following the tragedies that befell him
earlier in life, including surviving death camps and losing a wife and a
daughter, the man who would become Magneto wandered the Earth looking
for a purpose. Eventually, his travels led him to Israel. Now calling
himself Erik Lensherr, he started to work as a volunteer orderly at a
hospital in Haifa. There, he met doctor Daniel Shomron, a psychiatrist
specializing in treating traumatized victims.
(X-Men II#40 (fb) - BTS) - Daniel Shomron introduced Erik to his
colleague Charles Xavier, who had come to Haifa to consult on the
curious case of the catatonic Gabrielle Haller. Erik was amazed when
Xavier effortlessly managed to reach her. The two men struck up a fast
friendship.
(Uncanny X-Men I#320/X-Men II#40 (fb) - BTS) - Charles Xavier's mentally
unstable son Legion decided he had to help his father by going back in
time to kill his greatest enemy: Magneto. Though the X-Men tried to stop
him, Legion managed to travel two decades into the past, inadvertently
taking some of the X-Men with them. As a result of Legion's unorthodox
temporal transfer, everyone was rendered amnesiac upon arrival. Legion
was later spotted wandering the Haifa docks and taken to the local
clinic.
(X-Men II#40) - Erik surprised Charles Xavier at the clinic with a new
lightweight wheelchair he had discreetly crafted with his magnetic
abilities. After dodging some of Charles' questions about his hidden
talents, Erik agreed to meet him and Gabrielle for dinner later that
night. He wondered to himself if he should confide in Charles that he
was a mutant. He then went to check on "John Doe", an amnesiac patient
(actually the time tossed David Haller). When Erik was
briefly distracted because he saw Xavier outside courting Gabrielle,
Legion telepathically zoned in on the darkness in his mind, but was
overcome with the memories of the horrors Erik had endured. Horrified at
being violated, Erik ran out of the room and went looking for Charles so
he could help the boy. When they returned to John Doe's room at the
hospital, they found Haller writhing in pain on the floor, projecting
garbled memories of his experiences on Earth-616.
(Uncanny X-Men I#321) - Erik and Charles were shaken by what they had
witnessed in John Doe's room and it was a topic of discussion for the
next several weeks, though they still wouldn't acknowledge they
themselves had powers. Some time later, while at a local bar, their
conversation about the implications of a potential new race of homo
superior was cut short when Xavier instigated a bar brawl to
stop patrons from bullying a disabled street performer. With Erik's aid,
Charles knocked out all the assailants. Though he admired his friend's
kind heart, Erik had a hard time stomaching his naivete, especially
Xavier's line "every dream worth having is a dream worth fighting for".
He promised to one day carve them on his tombstone.
(Uncanny X-Men I#321 - BTS) - David Haller remembered who he was and
left his hospital room to complete his mission. He encountered his
mother Gabrielle and telepathically made her believe he was Charles. He
then forced himself on her.
(Uncanny X-Men I#321) - When Charles Xavier picked up Gabrielle's mental
distress, he and Erik hurried to her side where they found a furious,
powered up Legion hovering over her unconscious body. As soon as Legion
spotted Erik, he announced that he had come to kill him before he could
become the greatest villain the world has ever known.
(X-Men II#41) - Erik was forced to openly use his magnetic abilities to
defend himself against Legion's psionic assault. Taking the fight to the
skies over Haifa, their altercation drew the attention of the X-Men who
had also been stuck in the past for several weeks. While he tried to
survive Legion's attacks, Erik listened to his deranged opponent explain
why he had to die, all the while wondering why he kept calling him
'Magneto'.
(X-Men II#41) - BTS) - Apocalype watched media coverage of Legion and
Erik's fight. Seeing powerful mutants out in the open a decade earlier
than his ally Mr. Sinister had predicted, En Sabah Nur decided now was
the time to launch his war against humanity.
(X-Men II#41) - Legion was briefly
taken down by the arriving Iceman who flash froze every drop of
moisture in Haller's body, effectively turning him into a solid ice
statue. This only allowed Erik a moment's relief, Haller soon
recovered and was seconds from killing him. At the last possible moment,
Charles Xavier jumped in and caught the lethal psychic blast meant for
his friend. Xavier instantly perished, causing the timeline to forcibly
correct the temporal paradoxes Xavier's demise had caused.
(X-Men II#41 - BTS) - As Legion, Storm, Iceman and Psylocke vanished,
Erik only barely noticed that the time-displaced Lucas Bishop remained,
his mind now damaged by the temporal energies that spirited Legion and
his fellow X-Men away.
(X-Men II#41) - Holding his friend's dead body in his arms, Erik vowed
to dedicate his life to honoring Charles' legacy.
(Amazing X-Men I#3 (fb) - BTS) - Erik saw to it that Charles was buried
on the Xavier family estate in Westchester County. Keeping his promise, Erik had the quote "Every dream worth
having is a dream worth fighting for" put on his friend's tombstone.
(Official
Handbook of the Marvel Universe: X-Men - Age of Apocalypse 2005 I#1)
- Apocalypse declared war on mankind just as Erik was starting to
work out ways in which he could make Xavier's dream of a world where
humans and mutants would live together peacefully a reality. Erik
began to gather a mutant army to fight off En Sabah Nur.
(Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: X-Men - Age
of Apocalypse 2005 I#1) - Traveling through Germany, he
discovered Pietro and Wanda Maximoff who he was surprised to
find were actually his children. He invited
them to help him create a team of mutants to protect those who could
not protect themselves. As Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, the
siblings embraced their father's cause.
(Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe:
X-Men: Age of Apocalypse 2005 I#1) - Magnus went public
with his intentions to train mutants in the use of their
powers. He was approached by John and Elaine Grey who
wanted his help to deal with their young daughter Jean
who had trouble with her psionic gifts. Jean became the
first mutant other than his children to join Magnus'
cause. Because he had limited experience with telepathy,
he focused Jean's training on the development of her
telekinetic potential instead.
(Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: X-Men - Age
of Apocalypse 2005 I#1) - At the
same time Magnus was assembling his students, Apocalypse also
gathered a legion of mutant followers who believed in his survival
of-the-fittest mantra. By the time Lensherr had gathered his team,
christening them "X-Men" in honor of his fallen friend, Apocalypse
had grown too strong. The eternal mutant had started to gain more
and more control over substantial sections of North America.
(X-Man '96 I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Magnus continued to encounter
like-minded mutants such as the master inventor Forge, the
shapeshifter Kevin Sydney and the illusion casting Jason Wyngarde.
(X-Man '96 I#1) - Responding to a call for aid from Forge, Magnus
traveled to Niagara Falls where he rescued a future version of X-Man
(Nate Grey) who had traveled from Earth-616 back to Earth-295 to
stop the villainous Sugar Man who had already built a base near the
falls. Magnus was surprised to hear the young mutant refer to him as
'Magneto' and even more stunned when the boy proved capable of
shutting down his magnetic powers. Magnus proved instrumental in
helping Forge and X-Man stop the Sugar Man from releasing a deadly
virus into the water supply and he helped free Kevin Sydney and
Jason Wyngarde in the process. In the aftermath, he begrudgingly
agreed to reconstruct the fargate device that let Forge send Nate
Grey back to Earth-616. He then left to take Sugar Man's venom to a
climate cold enough to kill all pathogens.
(X-Men Chronicles I#1 (fb) - BTS) - To keep abreast of what was
going on in the world, Magneto launched a system of spy satellites
that allowed him to monitor any part of the world from Wundagore.
(X-Men
Chronicles I#1 (fb) - BTS) - To ensure his young wards had the
best possible chance of survival, Magneto proved to be a stern,
often brutal taskmaster. He subjected his most promising recruits
to daily, rigorous training exercises in a combat simulator his
students dubbed "The Killing Zone".
(Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: X-Men - Age of
Apocalypse 2005 I#1) - While his students prepared for their
inevitable encounter with Apocalypse and his forces, Magneto would
make frequent clandestine trips behind enemy lines to make
contacts, look for new recruits and gather valuable technologies.
(X-Men Chronicles I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Magneto encountered the mutant
called Weapon X. He invited him to join his X-Men on Wundagore,
promising the feral Canadian a real workout. During this time
period he also encountered the shapeshifter Mystique who told him
Apocalypse was trying to recruit her ward Rogue.
(Official Handbook of the
Marvel Universe: X-Men - Age of Apocalypse 2005 I#1) -
Mystique delivered the young mutant Alison Blair to Magneto
who offered to train her in the use of her ability to
transform sound into light.
(X-Men Chronicles I#1)
- Magneto surprised his team by shifting the Killing Zone
to level four after he caught them celebrating the fact
they had just beaten its third level. He then shocked them
even more by introducing Weapon X as their newest, most
dangerous member. Logan immediately proved this by
succumbing to a berserker rage that the inexperienced
telepath Jean Grey managed to temper with Magneto's
guidance.
(X-Men Chronicles I#1 - BTS) - Magneto ordered his
students to give the now calmed down Logan a tour of the
facilities.
(X-Men Chronicles I#1) - Magneto was interrupted by Bova
during a quiet moment of contemplation about his long dead
friend Charles Xavier and the monumental task that lay
ahead of him. She reminded him Mystique had arrived to see
him. During their meeting, the shapeshifter agreed to
leave Rogue in his care, much to the young girl's own
surprise. Magneto comforted Rogue who was upset about her
energy draining powers, assuring her that they would find
ways to control her abilities and that she was safe and
among family.
(X-Men
Chronicles I#1 - BTS) - Traveling aboard their Celestial ship,
Apocalypse and his heralds Candra, Gideon, Death, Sabretooth and War
appeared over New York City to announce the end of human domination was
near. They later attacked Cape Citadel, intending to take control of the
nation's strategic air command and all United States missile sites
around the world.
(X-Men Chronicles I#1) - Monitoring the attack on Cape Citadel, Magneto
was convinced he had to act now. He assembled his team of X-Men, but
insisted his daughter Wanda stayed on Wundagore to protect the younger
mutants and Rogue. He then led his charges to the hangar bay where they
were surprised to find a state of the art jet plane waiting for them.
(X-Men Chronicles I#1 - BTS) - Not too long after Magneto and the X-Men
left, Wundagore was attacked by Magneto's son Nemesis. Wanda and Rogue
succeeded in beating him back, but Maximoff was mortally wounded in the
process. With her dying breath, she insisted Rogue told her father
Wundagore wasn't safe anymore. She also insisted Rogue was kind to him
because he needed love and support.
(X-Men Chronicles I#1) - Magneto led the X-Men in opposing Candra and
her troops who attacked to buy Gideon time to gain control over the
nuclear missiles. Magneto easily deflected Sabretooth's assault, but
this left him open to Candra's psionic blast. After a while he was
forced to leave the battlefield to stop Gideon who had just initiated
the countdown sequence. Magneto made the tactical error of using his
magnetic powers on Gideon who absorbed, amplified and redirected the
energy back at Magnus. Still capable of using his powers, Magneto broke
free by drawing a massive amount of power from the Earth's magnetic
field and using it to overload his opponent. Gideon exploded and the
released magnetic energy short-circuited the launch sequence computers.
(X-Men Chronicles I#1 - BTS) - After the X-Men beat Candra and the
Horsemen, Apocalypse showed himself briefly to gloat about Magneto's
demise before ordering his Ship to fire on the young mutants and
Sabretooth, who had betrayed Candra and the others.
(X-Men Chronicles I#1) - Magneto recovered from the destruction of
missile command in time to disable Ship's weapons array with a wide
magnetic pulse. After Apocalypse left, he congratulated the X-Men on
their first successful mission. But by the time they returned home to
Wundagore, Magneto had to mourn the loss of his daughter Wanda.
(Weapon X I#3 (fb) - BTS) - Magneto, Bova and the X-Men laid Wanda
Maximoff-Lensherr to rest on Mount Wundagore.
(X-Men
Alpha I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Magneto had dealings with the
young mutant Warren Worthington who would become the
neutral information peddler Angel.
(Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe:
X-Men - Age of Apocalypse 2005 I#1) - Their fight against Apocalypse
took Magneto and the X-Men to Eurasia where they picked up a number
of new recruits, including the weather goddess Storm. In Japan,
Magneto proved instrumental in keeping Sunfire alive after he had
overloaded his thermonuclear powers in an attempt to kill Apocalypse
and Nemesis. Magneto constructed a containment suit that would keep
Yashida safe from his own powers. (Tales from the Age of Apocalypse I#2 - BTS) - The Inhumans also defeated the other X-Men. Death had them brought on board Ship where
he chained the mutants up in preparation for exposing them to the
Terrigen Mists so they could become the vanguard of a new army he'd
use against Apocalypse.
(Official Handbook of the Marvel
Universe: X-Men - Age of Apocalypse 2005 I#1) - Magneto
led a small band of X-Men to oppose Nemesis who was leading the
culling of Japan. When Nemesis was about to kill Quicksilver,
Magneto grew so incensed at the thought of losing another child to
the villain that he used his powers to tear him apart from the
inside. Magneto left Nemesis for dead on the battlefield, unaware
that he was quietly retrieved by Dark Beast who began work to turn
him into the far more powerful Holocaust.
(Official Handbook of the Marvel
Universe: X-Men - Age of Apocalypse 2005 I#1) - Magneto
was surprised when Sabretooth and his ally Wild Child
showed up at Wundagore. Creed had been sent to
Apocalypse's prison by Holocaust for disobeying orders
where he befriended Wild Child. After some tense moments
with Weapon X, both he
and Wild Child were allowed to join.
(X-Men Chronicles I#2 (fb) - BTS) - Because Wundagore's
security had been compromised, Magneto eventually moved the X-Men to a
luxury loft in the mountains of New Mexico (see comments).
(Official Handbook of the Marvel
Universe: X-Men - Age of Apocalypse 2005 I#1) - During a
confrontation with prelate Alex Summers and his
Infinites, Magneto's life was saved by the young mutant
thief Gambit. Magneto invited him to join the X-Men and
the two struck up a fast friendship.
(Official Handbook of the Marvel
Universe: X-Men - Age of Apocalypse 2005 I#1) - When
Katherine Pryde survived the Chicago cullings to become
the X-Men's youngest member, Magneto ordered Weapon X to
oversee her training. With Magneto's blessing, Logan
prepared her for her future role as the team's ghost
assassin. He also provided her with metallic claws
similar to her mentor's.
(Factor-X I#3 (fb) -
BTS) - During an attack on one of Apocalype's processing
plants, Magneto was forced to leave Jean Grey behind. As
a result, Jean spent months in the Pens where Mr.
Sinister examined her DNA and found she possessed the
desired genetic potential to create offspring powerful
enough to take on Apocalypse himself.
(X-Men
Chronicles I#2 (fb) - BTS) - Magneto continued to grow
closer to Rogue, eventually appointing her as his
second-in-command.
(Factor-X I#3 (fb) - BTS) - Weapon X blatantly
disregarded Magneto's standing orders regarding Jean.
He went to the Pens to free the woman he loved. This
led to a brutal confrontation with prelate Scott
Summers which cost Logan his left hand and Summers his
left eye.
(X-Men Chronicles I#2) - Weapon X and Jean Grey returned
to the X-Men's New Mexico base to inform Magneto that
they were leaving the team. When Magneto resisted, Logan
was ready to fight his way out but Jean convinced her
lover it would be better if they just left. Magneto
watched them go in quiet resignation. He then ordered
Quicksilver to lead the team through a battle exercise
and was about to join them when he picked up a
telepathic message from Jean Grey telling him she'd
forgiven him.
(X-Men Chronicles I#2 - BTS) - When Holocaust heard
Weapon X and Jean Grey had left, he realized the X-Men
were weakened. Eager to exact vengeance on Magneto for
making him dependent on his armor, he summoned the
services of the powerful mutate Wolverine. He ordered
him to locate the X-Men and force Magneto to watch as he
killed his son Quicksilver.
(X-Men Chronicles I#2) - Days later, Magneto took his
team to Colorado to deal with with a horde of bandits
terrorizing Denver. Rogue and Gambit were worried about
Magnus, who appeared distracted.
(X-Men Chronicles I#2 - BTS) - Wolverine observed the
X-Men's fight against the bandits and used his powers to
take control of two unsuspecting members, giving them
power ups and sending them against Magneto. One of them
threw a non-metallic knife at Magneto, successfully
wounding him. When Gambit ordered a strategic retreat,
Wolverine concluded that he had to alter the parameters
of his mission: it wasn't Quicksilver who was the most
valuable to him but either Rogue or Gambit. Forcibly
taking charge of the surviving bandits, Wolverine tailed
the X-Men back to their New Mexico headquarters.
(X-Men Chronicles I#2) - Back at the base, Magneto's
wounds turned out to be superficial. Rogue insisted on
remaining behind to talk with Magneto, much to the
chagrin of Gambit who had been gathering up his courage
to ask her to marry him. At the same time Rogue tried to
comfort Magneto who was pushing himself harder than ever
to prepare their upcoming missions. He admitted to Rogue
that the departure of Jean and Logan forced him to face
the possibility that the X-Men might be a failed concept
born of his own ego. Rogue outright dismissed that
notion, pledging her undying loyalty to him. She left
the noticeably touched Magneto behind to get some sleep.
(X-Men Chronicles I#2 - BTS) - Wolverine led his hopped
up band of bandits through the Rocky Mountains, hot on
the trail of the X-Men's scent. At the same time Rogue
had a heart to heart with Quicksilver to really make
sure there wasn't any bad blood between them because
Magneto recently made her his second-in-command.
Quicksilver assured her it was okay. They then spotted
Magneto leading the X-Men in an impromptu late night
training session outside the compound.
(X-Men Chronicles I#2) - After the training, Magneto
ordered his team to bed because they had another mission
early in the morning. Gambit wanted to stay behind to
talk about Rogue and the possibility she might be able
to touch people again. Magneto was hesitant to discuss
this given his own growing feelings for Rogue, but was
spared the admission because Rogue herself joined them
and asked to talk with Magnus. Gambit left but stuck
around enough to witness Magneto combining his magnetic
powers with Rogue's to safely touch in a loving embrace.
Gambit was so angry at this perceived betrayal he
attacked his friend, but their fight was cut short by
the arrival of Wolverine's bandits.
(X-Men Chronicles I#2 - BTS) - The X-Men attacked the
bandits with Sabretooth taking charge and loving every
minute.
(X-Men Chronicles I#2) - Magneto and Rogue remained to
the side for a minute to discuss what had happened,
failing to notice Wolverine was approaching them from
behind. He downed Magneto and got ready to kill Rogue to
fulfill his mission, but Gambit intervened allowing
Magneto time to recover. However, Wolverine cornered
both men and forced Rogue to chose between the two of
them. When she picked Magneto, Gambit was heartbroken.
He managed to beat the nigh invulnerable Wolverine by
sticking a sizeable rock in his belt and charging it
until his opponent was launched off the mountain like a
rocket. In the aftermath, unable to handle seeing his
love in another man's arm, Gambit took a leave of
absence from the team.
(Astonishing X-Men I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Magneto welcomed Kevin Sydney to
the team as the Changeling. The shapeshifter's distinctive purple
costume evoked a rare moment of wit from Magnus who openly wondered:
"...Any shape imaginable and you chose that?!"
(Gambit and the X-Ternals I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Magneto once saved Lila
Cheney from Sinister's Gene-Patrols. He freed her from the asylum she
was kept at, though she had no idea she was a mutant. Her mind proved
incapable of coping with the scope her abilities when they first
manifested, causing her to forget about them altogether.
(Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: X-Men - Age of
Apocalypse 2005 I#1) - Magneto, Quicksilver and
his mother Mystique traveled to Germany to save mutant teleporter Kurt
Darkholme from a mob of religious zealots who were ready to burn him
at the stake. Mystique left Kurt in Magneto's care, which paved the
way for him to become one of the team's most stalwart and lethal
members.
(Gambit and the X-Ternals I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Through unrevealed
circumstances, Magneto once saved the life of Peter Corbeau, who
served as En Sabah Nur's librarian. In return, Corbeau provided him
with access codes to Apocalypse's stockpile of advanced technology.
(Amazing X-Men I#3 (fb) - BTS) - Magneto once faced the teleporting
Infinite Vanisher in battle.
(Tales from the Age of Apocalypse I#2 (fb) - BTS) - Magneto once again
moved the X-Men's base of operations. This time, he personally dug a
cavern and network of tunnels underneath the ruins of the Guthrie
family farmhouse in Kentucky. There, hidden by radioactive residue,
the team continued their underground rebellion.
(X-Men Chronicles I#2 (fb) - BTS) - Magneto
embarked on a one man rescue mission to save the powerful psionic
Bennett du Paris from the Madri. He succeeded in singlehandedly
routing Apocalypse's order of priestly scholars.
(Amazing X-Men I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Magneto personally oversaw Bennett's
recovery and training and allowed him to join the X-Men as Exodus.
Aware of his new recruit's potentially limitless power, Magneto felt
it necessary to restrict Bennett's access to the full array of his
abilities, fearing it might otherwise corrupt him. Fiercely loyal to
Magneto, Exodus accepted the X-Men's leader's judgement without
question.
(Official Handbook of the Marvel
Universe: X-Men - Age of Apocalypse 2005 I#1) - During a
raid on one of Sinister's Breeding Pens the young mutant
teleporter Blink was rescued by the X-Men. Sabretooth
took it on himself to oversee her training, ultimately
convincing Magneto she could be a member of the team
even though she was emotionally traumatized by her
experiences.
(Tales from the Age of Apocalypse I#2 - BTS) - Sunfire was captured by
Apocalypse's forces and handed over to the Inhuman Maximus, now better known as Apocalypse's
Horseman Death, who subjected him to a series of torturous
experiments.
(Tales from the Age of Apocalypse I#2) - Magneto took a risk
trying to rescue influential politician Robert Kelly from one of
Apocalypse's Central American detention centers. He went in on his own
and was almost defeated by the camp's metahuman guardians Diablo and
Crusher Creel. The arrival of Rogue and Nightcrawler helped turn the
tide. With the villains defeated and Kelly saved, Magneto apologized for
going in alone, explaining that he wanted to protect his X-Men. The
matter was quickly tabled when Nightcrawler
told him Mystique believed she'd located Apocalypse's hideout.
(Tales from the Age of Apocalypse I#2 - BTS) - After learning that
Apocalypse was hiding aboard his alien space ship over the Blue Area
of the Moon, Morph (posing as Sabretooth) tried to
convince the still traumatized Blink to help them out.
(Tales from the Age of Apocalypse I#2) - Allowing himself a rare
moment of weakness, Magneto opened up to Rogue about his doubts
concerning their continued crusade against Apocalypse, wondering if
they had achieved anything of note. Rogue refused to entertain her
husband's notion that their work had been in vain, reassuring him in
time for Morph to tell them Blink was ready to take them to the Blue
Area. Magneto led the assault, fascinated by the discovery there
were alien ruins and a breathable atmosphere on the Moon. Moments
later they engaged Death and his underlings, clones of the Inhuman
family. Magneto personally dealt with Crystal and Gorgon, but was
unable to defend himself against the water manipulating Triton who
succeeded in knocking him out.
(Tales from the Age of Apocalypse I#2) - Magneto and the others
revived in time to see prelate Scott Summers turn against Death
out of disgust over his treatment of Sunfire who was still a fellow
mutant. Without his containment suit, Sunfire's atomic fire flared
out of control, causing massive damage to Ship which allowed Blink
the opportunity to teleport her teammates back home. Magneto,
containing Sunfire in a magnetic shell, watched with the others as
the explosions rocking Ship were visible from Earth. He then assured
Rogue that he still held out hope, even though the war would rage
on.
(Amazing X-Men I#3 (fb) - BTS) - Magneto came close to defeating
Apocalypse when he caused his massive Celestial Ship to crash from
the skies. The effort nearly proved too much for him: he was left
with injuries so severe he lost about half of his power.
(Blink I#1) - Magneto chewed out Blink after she disobeyed orders
during a field mission to Chicago. While he sympathized with her
experiences growing up in one of Apocalypse's death camps, he couldn't
allow her personal feelings to endanger the entire team. If she
stepped out of line again, he promised her she wouldn't be part of his
X-Men anymore.
(Blink I#4) - Magneto and the X-Men were delighted when Blink returned
to them after an unplanned solo adventure to the Negative Zone.
(X-Men Alpha I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Magneto moved
the X-Men to Charles Xavier's estate in Westchester which was now part
of the Dead Zone surrounding Apocalypse's citadel in the former New
York City. The team avoided detection through advanced technology that
masked their presence.
(Official Handbook of the
Marvel Universe: X-Men - Age of Apocalypse 2005 I#1) - Magneto asked
Colossus to return to active duty to carry out an unrevealed mission
that left him so injured, only Magnus' control over metal kept him
alive. As a result, Peter could no longer revert to his human form.
(X-Men Alpha I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Magneto and Rogue
consummated their love. After the birth of their son Charles, they
decided they needed to keep the child safe while they and the other
X-Men continued to oppose Apocalypse's rule. Magneto constructed Nanny,
a robotic caregiver outfitted with sufficient defensive and offensive
capabilities to keep the child safe.
(Astonishing X-Men I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Magneto assured the
Human High Council that the X-Men would work with them
to help evacuate as many humans on the eastern seaboard
as possible.
(Age of Apocalypse: The Chosen I#1 - BTS) - Despite the fact
that Apocalypse felt Magneto had gone soft by having chosen
to follow the dream of another, he still listed Erik
Lensherr and his wife Rogue among those he deemed worthy of
survival in his Chosen files. Apocalypse concluded that he
and Magneto were destined to face one another and that there
would be only one survivor.
(X-Men Alpha I#1) - Magneto took his X-Men to Seattle to investigate
reports of cullings. They ran into prelate Unus and a small army of
Infinites who were attacking the time-lost Bishop, now an elderly man.
While the X-Men engaged his troops, Unus figured he could take out
Magneto with a plastic gun loaded with non-ferrous shells. However,
Iceman killed Unus before he could even fire a single round. The victory
brought Magneto no joy as he looked out over the piles of fresh corpses,
telling Quicksilver that he too once believed that mutants were superior
until Charles Xavier changed his mind.
(X-Men Alpha I#1 - BTS) - Sabretooth tried to question Bishop after
rescuing him from the Infinites, but he proved uncommunicative. Blink
was sent to get Magneto.
(X-Men Alpha I#1) -
When Magneto approached, Bishop recognized him and rushed to attack
Magnus, shouting cryptic phrases about their shared past until Magneto
put him to sleep by magnetically slowing the flow of blood to his brain.
Magneto ordered the team to take the mysterious mutant home with them.
Back in Westchester, Magneto and Rogue checked to see how their young
son was doing, with Rogue lamenting that she needed to be able to touch
her child. Magneto assured her they would find a way.
(Astonishing X-Men I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Sunfire and Blink stayed behind to
gather more evidence on the Infinites and their culling campaign.
(X-Men Alpha I#1) - When they tried to talk to Bishop, he continued to
accuse him of having something to do with Charles Xavier's demise.
Magneto felt the need to knock his house guest out again and came up
with a new plan. Without any active telepaths on the team, he decided it
would be best if he guided Rogue in absorbing Bishop's memories to learn
what he knew.
(X-Men Alpha I#1 - BTS) - The risky experiment created an unexpected
feedback loop that made Magneto and Rogue relive the history of
Earth-616 and how that reality turned out for the better with Charles
Xavier alive in it. Magneto also learned he needed something called the
M'Kraan crystal if he wanted to set the world right.
(X-Men Alpha I#1) - Rogue dismissed what she saw as a mere dream, but
Magneto was deeply shaken. He ordered Nightcrawler to reach out to his
mother and had Rogue send word to Colossus and Shadowcat while he
prepared the X-Men and their allies for the difficult tasks ahead.
(Gambit and the X-Ternals I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Magneto contacted his old
friend Gambit and asked him to come by the mansion because he had a
mission for his X-Ternals. He also reached out to Peter Corbeau to
call in the favor he owed. In preparation for the X-Ternal's mission
he ordered the scientist to start scanning the heavens to locate the
Shi'ar galaxy.
(Amazing X-Men I#2 (fb) - BTS) - Magneto put out a call to the retired
X-Man Banshee, imploring him to briefly return to the fold because he
had need of him. Sean Cassidy complied.
(X-Calibre I#1) - Magneto reached out to Mystique and ordered her to
work with Nightcrawler to extract the blind mutant seer Destiny from
Avalon. When she refused, Magneto threatened to reveal her location to
Apocalypse if she didn't cooperate. And, as an added bonus, complying
would also mean Magneto himself wouldn't hurt her either. Mystique
grudgingly complied.
(Gambit and the X-Ternals I#1) - Magneto accompanied Gambit to the
X-Ternals' hidden base of operations in the tunnels under Manhattan.
He waited for the X-Ternals to return, startling the wary band of
thieves with his presence. Gambit talked them down and explained that
Magneto needed them to steal the M'Kraan Crystal. Magneto then took
them through the tunnels to access Apocalype's stash of technological
treasures. Once inside, they were attacked by the Madri who proved no
match for the mutants. After reconnecting with Corbeau, the team
learned that they were headed for outerspace and that Lila Cheney was
a mutant teleporter.
Moments after her powers flared up and they were getting
ready to move, mudir Rictor and a squad of Infinites showed up. Magneto
ordered Gambit and his people to teleport away, leaving him to deal with
the Infinites. However, he was unable to prevent Rictor from entering
the teleportation rift after Gambit and his team had gone through. In
the aftermath, he tried to apologize to Corbeau for the impossible
situation he had placed him in, but Corbeau wasn't interested. Instead,
he told him to get out while he activated the facility's self-destruct
mechanism.
(Generation Next I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Magneto got in touch with Colossus
and Shadowcat and ordered them to have their students ready to go.
Magneto then left Westchester with Bishop, traveling across two hot
zones and the prairie before reaching the base of Generation Next in the
Rocky Mountains.
(Generation Next I#1) - Magneto interrupted the team's impromptu
training session, displeased with Peter and Kitty for apparently
ignoring his orders. He took them to meet Bishop, explaining that their
part in his elaborate plan is helping him locate the means to travel
through time. He asked the technopathic Know-It-All to scan Apocalypse's
data banks for information on chrono-variant mutants. She gathered a
list with mostly deceased subjects, including prelate Gallo and T.
Edenfox, as well as Flashback who was missing in action. Much to
Colossus' surprise, the most likely candidate was his own sister Illyana
who was also presumed dead. Instead, they learned, she was being held at
The Core, the primary energy plant for Apocalypse's empire in Seattle.
(Generation Next I#1 - BTS) - Before returning to Westchester, Magneto
ordered Kitty, Peter and their students to rescue Illyana and bring her
to him.
(Astonishing X-Men I#1) - Magneto told the X-Men that he
had recently discovered evidence that made him question everything they
stood for, right down to their very existence. While the team tried to
swallow the notion that their entire life might be the result of a
cosmic mistake, Blink and Sunfire teleported in from their scouting
mission which ended in a major battle against Apocalypse's forces.
Sunfire had lost control over his powers, forcing Magneto to erect a
giant metal hand to snuff his flame. Before Blink could close her
portal, prelate Delgado poked his head through and instantly determined
the location of the X-Men's base. Blink killed him with her powers and
then reported that the cullings have resumed on a massive scale, carried
out by Holocaust himself. (Amazing X-Men I#1) - Magneto, Bishop, Nanny and Charles watched
Quicksilver's X-Men team prepare for their upcoming mission to Maine to
aid the evacuation of civilians from the East Coast. He gave them a pep
talk and some mission specific instructions before sorting out a dispute
about transportation. Instead of having the fliers on the team carry
theme there or letting Iceman convert everyone to moisture, Magneto
allowed Exodus to discover he had the power to teleport. Though hesitant
to try this untested ability, DuParis trusted Magneto enough to make a
successful first attempt. (Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: X-Men - Age of Apocalypse 2005
I#1) - In the aftermath of the final battle against Apocalypse, Wild Child
discovered the mostly feral were-mutant Rahne Sinclair in the ruins of New
York City. With Magneto's aid, Sinclair slowly regained a tentative handle
on her humanity. (Official Handbook of the Marvel
Universe: X-Men: Age of Apocalypse 2005 I#1) - Magneto asked
Beak to join the team, ignoring protests about young
Barnell's limited mutant abilities. Some even considered
Beak's membership a political move to placate his father, an
influential senator. However, Magneto had complete faith in
Beak. Comments: Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby;
(Astonishing X-Men I#1) - Magneto was faced with multiple problems that
required his immediate attention: the upcoming evacuation, the cullings
and Bishop's claims. Talking over the situation with an incredulous
Nightcrawler, he asked for Kurt's trust before announcing he was
splitting up the team to try and tackle all three crises.
(Astonishing X-Men I#1 - BTS) - Rogue took her team to Chicago to stop
Holocaust and his Infinites. Magneto was too busy to see his wife and
his teammates off.
(X-Man I#1) - Magneto was arguing with Bishop over sending away the
X-Men on dangerous missions without telling them the whole truth.
Magneto was convinced he had done the best he could and refused to be
judged. Their argument was witnessed by young Nate Grey who was
eavesdropping in psionic form. Magneto briefly sensed a glimpse of the
teenager, wondering if it was a sign he was under too much strain or a
vision of a greater import.
(X-Man I#2) - Magneto was tending to
Charles when the boy picked up the psionic presence of X-Man and
Theresa Cassidy. Magneto didn't see anything, but trusted his child
enough to immediately take an imposing defensive stance. The two teen
mutants were so intimidated, they immediately left.
(Astonishing X-Men I#2) - Much to Bishop's dismay, Magneto took the time
to enjoy a quiet moment with his son, holding the helpless boy in his
arms while he slept. When Magneto told Bishop that he wasn't sure he
could sacrifice his son's life to recreate the world in its proper
order, Bishop repeated his earlier claims about this reality being a
kind of cosmic accident. None of that mattered to Magneto: to him, all
Charles was is love and love is never an accident. He asked Bishop to
give him tonight to say goodbye to his child.
(Amazing X-Men I#2 - BTS) - Apocalypse, having learned the location of
Magneto's base, ordered his troops to prepare for an assault which he
intended to lead himself.
(Astonishing X-Men I#3) - Magneto was preparing Bishop for his own
mission: going back into their shared past to kill Legion. Magneto
wanted to make sure Bishop was capable of pulling the trigger. They were
interrupted when Nanny's sensors
picked up a security perimeter breach. Immediately switching to
Defcon: Armageddon, the robotic nursemaid grabbed Charles and turned
her body into an impenetrable cocoon. Nanny then dropped through the
floor to the labyrithine sewers below the mansion. With Charles
relatively safe and secure, Magneto and Bishop decided they'd best
prepare for the coming attack.
(Amazing X-Men I#3 (fb) - BTS) - When the mansion's meager defense
fields also registered a perimeter security breach, Magneto and Bishop
went out to patrol the grounds.
(Amazing X-Men I#3) - During the patrol, Magneto found himself visiting
Charles Xavier's grave. He spent some time at the site until Bishop
angrily reminded him they didn't have time for this. When the
time-tossed mutant pulled a gun on him, Magneto calmly asked him to fire
over his shoulder, having already sensed the electromagnetic disturbance
caused by his old foe Vanisher teleporting in troops. Before Magneto
could fight him again, Vanisher popped out again. Bishop and Magneto
made short work of the Infinites, but were ill-prepared for Apocalypse
joining the fray. En Sabah Nur easily defeated Bishop and had Magneto on
the ropes with limited effort. Ready to sacrifice his own life, Magneto
set Bishop's energy blaster to overload but Apocalypse coldly wondered
if Magneto had courage enough to leave his young son to fend for
himself. Magneto backed down, got knocked out and was taken prisoner by
Apocalypse and his forces.
(Amazing X-Men I#3 - BTS) -
When the X-Men returned home, all they found was Magneto's damaged
helmet.
(Astonishing X-Men I#4) - Magneto was taken to Apocalypse's citadel in
the heart of what was once known as Manhattan. There, with his assistant
Rex looking on, En Sabah Nur began to torture his opponent, showing him
footage of his wife who was still on a mission to stop Holocaust.
Magneto proved defiant and tried to strangle his foe, but Apocalypse
happily reminded him of all his recent victories: from capturing him and
Bishop to crippling the Human High Council's Eurasian resistance.
(X-Man I#4) - Apocalypse was furious when Shadow King reported that Nate
Grey was still alive. He vowed to deal with the young telepath himself,
but first he focused on personally overseeing the torture of Magneto.
(X-Man I#4 - BTS) - X-Man tried to reestablish his psi-link with
Magneto, which led to him having a vision about Magnus' torture at the
hands of Apocalypse. He immediately flew off to New York to free the
master of magnetism.
(Weapon X I#4 - BTS) - When Magneto proved "determined to be obstinate
and non-communicative", Apocalypse left the interrogation to "more
inclined towards crudity and force" so he could deal with with other
matters.
(X-Men Omega I#1) - Apocalypse enjoyed watched Holocaust torture
Magneto, especially when he sensed the master of magnetism's resolve was
weakening. He then asked his assistant Rex to confirm that the trap had
been set. Magneto boastfully proclaimed that the X-Men would continue
without him, leading Apocalypse to calmly tell him he was aware of
Magnus' master plan after the Madri read Bishop's mind. He then
presented him with the M'Kraan crystal that had recently been delivered
to him by Guido, his double agent within the X-Ternals. Before knocking
Magneto out, Apocalypse told him the X-Men would be coming for the
crystal and he was ready to stop their attempt to wipe out this
timeline.
(X-Men Omega I#1 - BTS) - Warren Worthington sacrificed his life to blow
up the forcefield generator protecting Apocalypse's citadel. As a
result, Nate Grey and the X-Men were free to enter the base while
Prelate Summers and Jean Grey had a chance to evacuate Sinister's test
subjects from the Pens underneath En Sabah Nur's headquarters. Without
the forcefield, Apocalypse's citadel was vulnerable to the Human High
Council's impending bombing raid.
(X-Men Omega I#1) - Magneto regained consciousness in time to hear Rex
confirm the Shadow King's shocked announcement that the Human High
Council had managed to sneak their atomic bimbs past the Atlantic
Defense wall. As a result, the entire midwest was now a radioactive
crater. This caught Apocalypse off guard long enough for Nate Grey to
join the fray, liberating Magneto and handing him his helmet. X-Man
focused on Holocaust and the two of them crashed through the floor,
landing near the M'Kraan crystal where the X-Men had already put Destiny
and Illyana at work to confirm Bishop's claims. Magneto joined them,
greeting llyana and telling the young girl that he couldn't create a
better world without her. Illyana agreed to cooperate and joined Destiny
and Bishop who entered the crystal. Magneto ordered his X-Men to protect
the crystal at all costs.
(X-Men Omega I#1 - BTS) - Colossus, already in a fragile mental state
after watching his students die, swore he would kill Magneto if his
sister was not returned to him. Nevertheless, he agreed to defend the
crystal and tore into Apocalypse's forces like a man possessed. Before
the fight was done, he inadvertently killed his own wife, forcing Gambit
to put his fellow X-Man down.
(X-Men Omega I#1) - Forming a makeshift armor from nearby pieces of
metal, Magneto joined Rogue to face Apocalypse who played his trump
card: his servant Guido still had their son Charles. However, Rogue
mercilessly tore into Guido and reclaimed the boy.
(X-Men Omega I#1 - BTS) - Apocalypse slipped away to retrieve the
original M'Kraan crystal shard, figuring he could use it to travel to
Earth-616 and claim that world for his own.
(X-Men Omega I#1) -
Twenty years in the past, the fight between Legion, Magnus, Xavier and
the X-Men was interrupted by the arrival of the elderly Bishop who
fatally wounded Legion by forcing the boy to his powers on himself.
Legion slowly died in Bishop's arms while Charles and Magnus looked on.
As soon as David Haller perished, the X-Men were drawn back to their own
present as the timeline began to correct itself.
(X-Men Omega I#1) - Magneto and Nate Grey caught up with Apocalypse and
pressed the attack, though Holocaust soon showed up to distract Grey.
Overconfident, Apocalypse thought Magneto weak, leaving him vulnerable
to the mutant master of magnetism's ultimate feat of power. He focused
his strength and tore En Sabah Nur apart from the inside. He didn't have
long to celebrate: the Human High Council's atomic bombs were only
minutes away. Magnus rushed to his wife and son and held them close as
they watched the explosions approaching in the distance. Moments before
the blast wave consumed them, he talked of Charles Xavier, thanking his
long gone friend for changing his life.
(X-Men: Age of Apocalypse I#5 (fb) ) - Mere seconds before the bombs
reached them, Magneto witnessed the explosives getting wiped out by a
giant, flying energy raptor he sensed was connected to Jean Grey. He
even heard her in his mind, telling him that they had won.
(X-Men: Age of Apocalypse One-Shot I#1) - A split-second after learning
of Jean's involvement, Magneto was congratulated by Quicksilver and the
others for saving them all. Before he could tell them the truth, the
story of his supposed bravery began to spread and inspire the survivors.
Magneto agreed with young Illyana that Bishop had left them with the
gift of hope. To give people a symbol of that hope, he flew to Liberty
Island and magnetically reconstructed the devastated Statue of Liberty.
When he returned to Rogue and Illyana, they had been joined by Weapon X
who handed Jean Grey's corpse to him. Logan asked the mournful Magneto
to give her a proper burial before taking off for parts unknown.
(Age of Apocalypse I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Heralded as a hero for his actions,
Magneto was approached by newly elected US president Robert Kelly to
become his acting director of mutant affairs. Working out of the new
Xavier Institute in Washington D.C., he set out to hunt down and capture
everyone who worked for Apocalypse.
(Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: X-Men: Age of Apocalypse 2005
I#1) - Following the fall of Apocalypse, the masked female mutant Xorn
(secretly the vengeful Gen Next member Paige Guthrie) was discovered in
Dark Beast's Pens. Magneto offered her a place among the X-Men.
(Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: X-Men: Age of
Apocalypse 2005 I#1) - After learning that his old friend
Sunfire was still alive, the Silver Samurai came to the
United States and joined the X-Men. Unknown to his
teammates, he also delivered a top-secret weapon to Magneto
(see comments).
(X-Men: Age of Apocalypse One-Shot I#1) - Over the course of several
months, Magneto's frustration over having to live a lie started to gnaw
at him. One night, he was shocked to find himself mocked by Mr.
Sinister.
(Age of Apocalypse I#5 (fb) ) - Mr. Sinister, wearing a bomb belt rigged
to explode when exposed to magnetic energy, had came to talk. He
explained to Magneto that he needed to stop chasing after him. If he
didn't comply, Sinister promised to expose the lies Magneto had allowed
to perpetuate about his part in saving the eastern seaboard. Sinister
told him it was all Jean's doing and that she was still alive and in his
possession. Magneto wanted to rescue her, but for the sake of untold
others he decided to keep the secret and agreed to Sinister's terms.
(Age of Apocalypse I#2 (fb) ) - Magneto and the X-Men met
Kirika Yashida, the daughter of Weapon X and Mariko who had
been captured by Mr. Sinister and kept in his lab in a stasis
pod marked X-23. Once revived, it became clear she was a
mutant with powers similar to her father. Magneto took her in,
oversaw her training and even granted her request to have
adamantium grafted to her skeleton and bone claws.
(Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: X-Men: Age of
Apocalypse 2005 I#1) - Magneto sent Exodus, Iceman and Morph
on a secret mission from which they did not return.
(Age of Apocalypse I#1) - A year after Apocalypse's downfall,
president Kelly and Magneto held a press conference at the
White House to update the media on their progress. Despite
critical questions from reporters like Trish Tilby, Magneto
impressed the press corps by showing them live footage of the
X-Men taking down the Hellions who were holed up at the
Massachusetts Academy. Later that evening, while having dinner
with his X-Men, he caught flack from the Silver Samurai who
was incensed at the notion of being used to send fellow
mutants into the cruel hands of human jailers. Magneto
reminded the Samurai that the newly signed Bishop Treaty
assured a fair and proper trial for everyone.
(Age of
Apocalypse I#1 - BTS) - In dire need of allies to help him
deal with the more powerful renegade mutants, Magneto sent
X-23, now known as Kirika, to Canada to locate Weapon X. Logan
was stunned to learn was his daughter.
(Age of Apocalypse I#2) - Magneto accompanied his X-Men down
to the tunnels underneath New York City to offer the Morlocks
amnesty. However, after years of serving as lab animals for
Apocalypse, they were wary of authority figures. Their leader
Marrow attacked the team's envoy Silver Samurai and the crazed
Feral slashed open Xorn. Even Magneto was hit by a psychic
attack from Annalee which showed everyone his greatest fear:
Phoenix and Mr. Sinister. The X-Men were unable to effectively
fight back because of the power dampening Morlock Leech, but
after he was knocked out by Storm, the team regained the upper
hand. They beat the Morlocks and made sure Magneto was rushed
to the Xavier Institute infirmary.
(Exiles I#60) - The Exiles and their newest member Holocaust
materialized on Earth-295 to carry out the Timebroker's latest
order: kill Magneto and his X-Men. Blink and Sabretooth were
understandably hesistant, but Holocaust took great joy in
attacking Magneto's Washington headquarters which was empty
because his arrival happened to coincide with the New York
Morlock mission.
(Age of Apocalypse I#2 - BTS) - Quicksilver learned of the
attack on the Xavier Institute and was stunned to find the
mutant energy signatures registered at the site were more than
familiar. He rushed to tell his father.
(Age of Apocalypse I#2) - Magneto was so demoralized by the
failed Morlock mission that he felt Xavier's dream might not
be achievable if even their fellow mutants now despised them.
Rogue lifted his spirits and insisted he accompanied
Quicksilver, Sunfire and Gambit on a mission to Mexico to
trace the strangely family energy readings they picked up at
the Xavier Institute.
(Exiles I#61) - Magneto and his X-Men caught up with the
Exiles in Yucatan near one of Dark Beast's hidden
laboratories. The Timebroker had just told Namorita that
Magneto had to die, which didn't sit well with her. She
listened to Magneto chastise Blink, Sabretooth and Morph for
working with the son of Apocalypse, though he wasn't aware
Morph was not from Earth-295. After a brief fight, Holocaust
was ready to kill Magneto but he was stopped by Namorita who
convinced him to hold back. After all, they had been trying to
rid themselves of the Time Broker, the last thing they needed
to do was follow his orders. Seeing her logic, Holocaust broke
off the attack and allowed Blink to teleport them away. A
confused Magneto stayed behind to watch the Timebroker vanish
as well.
(X-Men: Age of Apocalypse I#3 - BTS) - While Magneto was away,
Xorn revealed herself to be Paige Guthrie, a former student
furious at being left to die in the Portland Core in the last
days of Apocalypse's reign. Now out for revenge, she
reconnected with the other members of the Guthrie family who
arrived at the Institute for a final showdown. The Guthries
chained up Charles Lensherr and waited for the X-Men to
return.
(X-Men: Age of Apocalypse I#4) - Moments after new recruit
Psylocke rescued Charles, Magneto returned home and made short
work of the Guthries with a little help from Rogue who wanted
to personally pay back Paige for having taken Charles. With
their dying breath, the Guthries revealed the secret deal
Magneto made with Mr. Sinister.
(X-Men: Age of Apocalypse I#5) - The X-Men quietly listened to
Magneto's explanation of his complicated relationship with
Sinister and the way he had purposefully maintained the lie
that he saved them all single-handedly. When he finished his
story, Rahne Sinclaire attacked him, but most of the others
backed their leader's decisions, though Weapon X remained
mostly furious. His lies meant Jean now continued to be in the
hands of a mad man.
(X-Men: Age of Apocalypse I#5 - BTS) - After Logan calmed
down, he sensed a smell on Paige Guthrie that clued him into
Sinister's location. Since Guthrie reeked of the stench of New
York and the harbor, the team correctly deduced Sinister and
Jean were on Liberty Island.
(X-Men: Age of Apocalypse I#6) - Before they went down to
Sinister's underground lair, Weapon X slashed Magneto's
helmet, a symbolic gesture to force the X-Men's leader to stop
hiding behind a mask. He then promised Magneto he would never
forget this, let alone forgive him. Upon locating Sinister's
underground lair, Magneto and the others were confronted by
the former Horseman, the Sinister Six and the newly revived
Jean Grey.
(X-Men: Age
of Apocalypse I#6) - During the fight against Sinister and his
Sinister Six, Magneto proved crucial in aiding Jean to reject
Sinister's mental manipulation. This left him open to Sauron's
attack, but he was saved by Quicksilver who intercepted the
lethal attack. Furious over the loss of another child, Magneto
manipulated the Silver Samurai's blade to tear his enemy
apart. By then, Jean Grey had killed Mr. Sinister which ended
the hostilities altogether. In the aftermath, after burying
his son, Magneto turned himself in for having lied to the
public about his role at the end of Apocalypse's reign. While
he waited for his trial in prison, Magneto left Jean to lead
the X-Men in his stead.
(Uncanny X-Force I#12 (fb) - BTS) - Magneto was
eventually released from prison.
(Exiles I#84) - Magneto and Rogue met with Sabretooth when he
returned to Earth-295 for a brief visit to check on Wild
Child. He was disturbed to learn Gibney was still missing in
action, but the Lensherrs assured Creed that finding him
remained a top priority, even though it's not even clear if
he's still alive. Before Magneto could make a case for having
Sabretooth and Blink rejoin his X-Men, the Tallus summoned
Creed to aid in the rescue of another reality (see
comments).
(Uncanny X-Force I#12 (fb) - BTS) - Relations between humans
and mutants steadily deteriorated over the years. Everything
changed with the rise of Clan Akkaba, headed by Weapon X who
was possessed by the Celestial Death Seed that once empowered
Apocalypse. Now known as Weapon Omega, he took over New York
City with the help of a fleet of modified Sentinels and the
villainous Black Legion. The X-Men continued to fight the good
fight, but they lost a fair number of members along the way.
(Uncanny X-Force I#19.1 (fb) - BTS) - Magneto was unable to
prevent the Black Legion's Demon-Ock from crushing his young
son Charles.
(Uncanny
X-Force I#12 (fb) - BTS) - Magneto's spine was severely
damaged when he tried to save Charles. Now confined to a
wheelchair, it fell to Jean Grey to prop up the remaining
X-Men.
(Uncanny X-Force I#11 (fb) - BTS) - Magneto and the X-Men
relocated to the underwater city of New Atlantis.
(Uncanny X-Force I#11) - Magneto and Jean were surprised when
Nightcrawler returned to base with the 616-versions of Logan,
Psylocke, Deadpool and Fantomex. They had come to Earth-295
looking for a Celestial Lifeseed.
(Uncanny X-Force I#12) - Earth-616's X-Force and Magneto's
X-Men joined forces to secure another Celestial Lifeseed and
find a way to return them to their native reality. Thanks to
the X-Men's newest member M.O.D.O.K., they located usable
Lifeseeds within a Celestial killed by Apocalypse years
earlier. They then set out to free the teleporter Gateway from
Clan Akkaba's prison The Sky. Magneto joined Gateway's rescue
effort, magnetically commandeering a recently captured
Sentinel that allowed the mutants access to the prison.
Magneto, guarded by Silver Samurai, stayed behind in the
Sentinel to actively misaligne and scramble the other
Sentinels' sensors.
(Uncanny X-Force I#13) - Magneto and his X-Men quickly
realized the Black Legion had prepared an ambush for them.
While his teammates fought for their lives inside the prison
trying to reach Gateway, Magneto's Sentinel was attacked by
its metallic brethren.
(Uncanny X-Men I#13 - BTS) - Magneto and the Silver Samurai
managed to escape from the other Sentinels relatively
unscathed.
(Uncanny X-Force I#19.1 (fb) - BTS) - Magneto and his X-Men
got involved in a convoluted plan concocted by the
X-Terminated and the Human Resistance's geneticist David
Moreau. In order to end the mutant threat, Moreau had secretly
cloned Wanda Maximoff in order to use her reality altering
powers to erase the mutant X-gene. Because this cloned Wanda
was mindless, they needed the powerful telepath Jean Grey to
access her powers.
(Uncanny X-Force I#19.1) - Magneto and Rogue were on hand to
join Jean at Moreau's lab. He was horrified when he spotted
several clones of his long dead daughter, causing him to rise
up out of his chair to magnetically destroy all but one.
Before he could deal with Moreau, Weapon Omega and Clan Akkaba
attacked their location. Magneto and Rogue tried to buy Jean
and Moreau some time, but they proved no match for their
former teammate who first killed Rogue and then took his time
to end the life of Magneto, promising him this was not
personal.
(X-Termination I#1 -
BTS) - Magneto was laid to rest with the other fallen X-Men in
a memorial garden outside New York City, complete with
lifesize statues.
(Rise of the Powers of X I#5) - Magneto was among the many
deceased mutants from countless realities whose souls were
summoned to the White Hot Room by Earth-616's Jean Grey to
help her and the Phoenix finally defeat the multiverse
spanning threat of Nathaniel Essex.
adapted by Scott Lobdell & Mark Waid, Roger Cruz, Steve Epting, Tim Townsend & Dan Panosian.
There is a lot we don't know about this version of
Magneto. Even his handbook profile doesn't provide a detailed account of
his actions in the twenty years between Xavier's death in X-Men
II#41 and his appearance in X-Men: Alpha. Did he meet
Peter Corbeau before or after he encountered Lila Cheney? Where or when
did he run into Weapon X? Who were his contacts on the Human High
Council? Why did the move from Wundagore take so long after Wanda's
death? Was that loft in New Mexico actually Angel's aerie? As a result
the timeline presented in this profile is based on established canon
events, plus some fairly educated guesses.
And there's always more unanswered questions. He appears as youthful as
his Earth-616 counterpart who was rejuvenated by Erik the Red after
getting turned into a baby by Alpha the Ultimate Mutant. It's unlikely
Magneto had similar encounters on Earth-295. In fact you might say he's
had a far more stressful life than 'our' Magneto... But he's full of vim
and vigor either way.
It's also impossible to pinpoint when Magneto lost half his powers. In Amazing
X-Men I#3 Apocalypse claims it happened when he "forced his
Celestial ship to crash from the skies". That feat left him permanently
injured, which led to a significant power loss. However, we see Ship go
down in Tales from the Age of Apocalypse I#2 and Magneto is
definitely none the worse for wear afterwards so it's more likely it
happened behind the scenes at a later date. Of course, Mikhaiil Rasputin
is seen flying around in a vessel that looks remarkably like Ship in X-Universe
so maybe Apocalypse had more vessels at his command.
Still, even at half power it was remarkably simple for Magneto to tear
apart Apocalypse. And that was after several days of extensive torture.
If it's that easy, you wonder why he waited for the final pages of X-Men:
Omega.
And then there's the curious case of life after
Apocalypse. In 2005's first mini-event, about a year has passed since
the events of X-Men: Omega... But it looks like En Sabah
Nur's two decade reign of terror never happened. Humans are back in
charge, in New York even the skyscrapers are back up and Magneto is a
pencil pushin' bureaucrat who now hunts his own kind? That's an
unbelievable amount of change in a single year.
Not only did the writer of the 2005 Age of Apocalypse handbook add tons
of new backstory, he also helped set up future storylines for that
year's AOA miniseries. Some of them were paid off, others remain
danglers to this very day. We still don't know what the mysterious
weapon was that the Silver Samurai delivered to Magneto when he joined
the team. Since they're both dead now, it doesn't matter much.
That having said: compiling this extensive profile made me, pardon the
pun, marvel at the Age of Apocalypse's amazingly tight continuity.
Especially the various series comprising the initial 1995 event fit
together perfectly. Okay, fine, with the possible exception of Magneto
and Bishop somehow traveling across the country to brief Generation Next
in between X-Men: Alpha I#1 and Astonishing X-Men I#1.
Other than that mid 90s example of "this meeting could have been an
email", all the (prequel) stories that followed go out of their way to
honor the source material.
