History:
(The Romances of Nurse Helen
Grant#1/4 (fb) - BTS) -
Maria Lane dreamed of married life in a house. She married Herb Lane
and
they were deeply in love. However, she grew increasingly clingy,
wanting
to spend every evening at home with him after he returned from work,
yet he insisted and maintained his own interests, including weekly
bowling nights with his male friends, attending civic meetings and
classical music, all activities disliked by Maria. She tried to control
him by deciding on his food and what clothes he would wear, which he
tolerated. But his occasional evening absences made her
incredibly upset as she apparently had no real personal interests of
her own.
(The Romances of Nurse Helen
Grant#1/4) - Maria was playfully dramatic as Herb left for another
bowling
night, but was then sad alone in the house. The next night, Herb went
to
a civic meeting; Maria, disinterested in local affairs, stayed home
feeling lonely again. A few days later, Maria bumped into Helena
Patterson, who commented on how smart and handsome Herb was at the
civic meeting, raising concern in Maria. That night, she confronted
Herb and insisted he stay home with her, but he rebuffed, stating they
needed to get out of their shell. Despite her small protestation, he
took her to a classical music concert that night and she found she
enjoyed it because it was a shared activity. She learned bowling and
delighted in fun time with Herb, likewise attending civic meetings
(although it was Herb speaking on stage and she remained in the
audience). She found she was happy and proud to tell others she was
Herb's wife.
Comments: Created by uncredited writer and Larry Lieber.
A cute story with nice drama, but the art lacks
backgrounds at
times and many of the characters' poses look like they were copied from
magazines or catalogs. Not quite Larry Lieber's usual style, in my
opinion, but his name is on the first page.
These romance stories often had the flavor of the time in which they were written, and nothing else to tie them into Marvel's sliding timescale. As such, it's likely that the stories took place at the time of publication rather than being part of the sliding timescale.

CLARIFICATIONS
:
Maria Lane has no known connections to:
Herb Lane had married Maria. After a month of
marriage and living in their house, Maria grew increasingly clingy,
wanting Herb to stay at home every night with her after he returned
from work, but he insisted on his own time, including weekly bowling
nights with his male friends and attending civic meetings. Eventually
frustrated at her isolationist behavior, Herb dragged her along to a
classical music concert. She initially resisted because she didn't like
the music, but found that she enjoyed the evening because it was shared
with her husband. Likewise, she went bowling with him and attended
civic meetings. Sharing their individual interests strengthened their
relationship (although it appears that only Herb had outside interests).
--The Romances of Nurse Helen Grant#1/4
While obsessing over why her husband Herb didn't want
to spend every night at home with her, Maria Lane ran into Helena
Patterson at the supermarket. Helena commented that she thought Herb
was the smartest and most handsome man in town that she'd encountered
at the civic meeting (which Maria had not wanted to attend). Almost
mischievously, Helena then went off, leaving Maria a little concerned.
Maria later decided to attend future civic meetings with Herb as a
joint
social activity, and beamed in pride to Helena at how proud she was to
be his wife.
Helena was probably more of an
acquaintance than a friend.
