History:

(Jann of the Jungle I#9/text) - Eduardo Labarca was assigned as the new regional administrator in Chá Columba after his predecessor, Sr. Rodriguez, was recalled to Lisbon. He arrived at the airstrip near Chá Columba where three employees of the administrator's residence greeted him. The three staffers brought him to the residency and wondered if he would be different from Rodriguez. As he went over Rodriguez's papers, Labarca complained to his secretary Castello that Rodriguez didn't seem to have done any work administering the area. Castello observed the area was at peace and the barns of the kraals were full, but Labarca believed "One either does things according to the law or else it is not done properly."

Labarca summoned the American trader Benton to his residency and asked him about his time as an unofficial adviser to Sr. Rodriguez. When Benton told Labarca he believed the Angolans were trustworthy, Labarca disputed this, telling Benton he'd leared a minor Melanji chief called Rotojo had recently moved his cattle to a new kraal, but another Melanji chief was missing 20 cattle. Labarca accused Rotojo of stealing the cattle and Benton offered to guide Labarca to Rotojo's kraal to learn the truth.

Labarca followed Benton as he guided him by the Balunjunga mountain range. As they neared Rotojo's new kraal, they were met by some of Rotojo's men, who were escorting the 20 missing cattle back to their owner. Labarca met Rotojo and Benton translated for him as the chief explained the cattle had simply wandered into his herd but he hadn't discovered this until he reached his new kraal. Labarca called himself a fool and apologized to Rotojo. At that, Rotojo declared he knew he could trust Labarca because only a honest man could call himself a fool. Rotojo asked Labarca to bring his eldest son with him to Chá Columba to help him in his work. Labarca said from then on he would employ both common sense and the law.

CLARIFICATIONS:
Eduardo Labarca should not be confused with:

BENTON

Benton was a white-haired American trader who lived nearby Chá Columba, having lived there for over 20 years. Benton was frequently contacted by Sr. Rodriguez to solicit his advice. When Labarca became the new regional administrator he summoned Benton to an audience. When Labarca accused Rotojo of having stolen cattle, Benton disagreed, stating all of the Angolans he'd dealt with had been very trustworthy. Benton guided Labarca to Rotojo's new kraal and helped translate for him; they discovered Rotojo had discovered the surplus cattle had wandered into his herd and he'd already arranged to return them. Labarca apologized for doubting Rotojo's character.

CASTELLO

Sr. Castello was a Portuguese secretary assigned to the residence of the regional administrator in Chá Columba. Sr. Castello served both Sr. Rodriguez and Sr. Labarca. When Labarca believed Rotojo had stolen cattle and had Benton bring him to Rotojo's kraal, Castello accompanied Labarca and prepared his meals during their excursion.

SENHOR RODRIGUEZ

Sr. Rodriguez was Eduardo Labarca's predecessor as regional administrator in Chá Columba. He was remembered as being amiable, easy-going and fat with a "genial, owl-like" stare. Sr. Rodriguez often turned to Benton for advice. He was recalled to Lisbon, Portugal and left Chá Columba one day before Sr. Labarca's arrival.

ROTOJO

Rotojo was a native Angolan from the Melanji tribe, of which he was a minor chief. Rotojo relocated from the area near Chá Columba to found a new kraal by the Balunjunga mountain range. As he moved his cattle, 20 cattle from another Melanji chief's kraal wandered into his herd. By the time Benton led administrator Eduardo Labarca to Rotojo's kraal, Rotojo had already discovered the surplus cattle and sent his men to return them to their proper owner. Labarca was ashamed of himself for thinking Rotojo was treacherous and called himself a fool; hearing this, Rotojo replied he now knew he could trust Labarca because only a honest man can call himself a fool. Rotojo asked Labarca to bring his eldest son back with him Chá Columba to assist him in his work.
