History:
(Battlefront I#27/4) - Lt. Clyde Favor was a Canadian artillery officer who served under Captain Dean. Samuel Mackby was one of his men. During World War I, Lt. Favor's outfit went into battle for the first time against German forces on Messines Ridge, but the German fortifications were found to be too strong, forcing them to retreat. The German placement was dubbed "the iron wall." Lt. Favor conferred with his fellow officers to plan a way of overcoming the Germans but every attack on the "iron wall" failed.
Lt. Favor finally went to see Captain Dean to ask for orders, hoping they could overcome the "iron wall." Captain Dean replied that it would be suicide to ask their men to charge toward the ridge. Lt. Favor suggested a charge on horseback would succeed, but Captain Dean had no orders for a field artillery charge. Lt. Favor suggested to Captain Dean that he was going to send his men out on horses as a "drill" and that explosions from Dean's artillery might cause their horses to spook and "there's no telling which way they might bolt." Realizing Favor's meaning, Dean agreed to supply him with artillery cover for an unauthorized charge.
Lt. Favor led his men toward the "iron wall" while Dean's artillery started a barrage to cover for them. Favor's men unloaded heavy weapons and fired them at the Germans, finally shattering their defenses. With that, Canadian infantry was able to advance and capture Messines Ridge.
Afterward, Captain Dean and Lt. Favor explained to their superiors they had no orders for their attack, maintaining their cover that the horses had simply been spooked. Realizing the attack had been planned, a French officer thanked them for their courage and that France owed a debt to them and their "so fortunately frightened horses!"

CLARIFICATIONS:
Lt. Clyde Favor should not be confused with:

Captain Dean was Lt. Clyde Favor's superior officer in the Canadian Corps. When Lt. Favor asked Captain Dean for orders to move against the Germans' "iron wall" on Messines Ridge, Dean replied any attack would be suicidal because they couldn't move fast enough and his big guns could only force the Germans to duck. When Lt. Favor suggested a field artillery charge, Dean replied he couldn't give such an order, Lt. Favor suggested he take the horses out for a drill and they might bolt due to loud noises. Catching his meaning Captain Dean surreptitiously agreed to his plan. Captain Dean arranged for an artillery barrage to cover Lt. Favor's unauthorized field artillery charge, which proved successful against the Germans. After the fortress had been captured, Captain Dean maintained his cover story to his superiors, claiming the horses had merely been spooked.
