History:
(Strange Academy I#1 (fb)) -
While still a puppy, Emma was once
magically levitated by the grade school-aged Emily Bright, much to the
surprise of Emily's friend. Years later, while the now-teenaged Emily
Bright was out walking the much larger Emma, Emma spotted a squirrel
and ran out in front of a car. Emma was swiftly hit by the car and
Emily rushed to Emma's side, instinctively using her magic abilities to
ward off death and revive Emma. Following these events, Emily found
herself feeling the pain of the accident herself and spent a lot of
time with Emma trying to learn a solution to her pain. After reading a
book that suggested she "become one with all things," Emily Bright cast
a spell hoping to accomplish just that but she instead brought to life
a nearby tree that snatched her up, prompting Emma to jump up and bark.
The tree swatted Emma aside with a branch and Emily blasted the tree in
response before rushing to Emma's side. The weakened Emma soon began
barking at the tree again and Emily struggled to keep the tree at bay
until mystic Zelma Stanton intervened and defeated the tree. Emma and
Emily subsequently gathered around Zelma, who explained that the tree
had come to life due to the cost involved with summoning enough magic
to restore life.
(Strange Academy I#1) - Later, Emma laid her head on
the kitchen table as Zelma Stanton and Emily Bright discussed with
Emily's parents her attending Strange Academy to better learn to use
her magical abilities. A few weeks later, Emily Bright said her
goodbyes to Emma and her parents as she prepared to leave for Strange
Academy.
(Strange Academy Presents: The
Death of Doctor Strange#1 / 3) -
During a period in which Emily Bright returned home following the death
of Doctor Strange, Emma became jealous of Emily's new pet, the mystic
creature Catbeast, and she chased Catbeast through the house,
eventually catching Catbeast by the tail on the kitchen table. Having
witnessed the entire event, Mrs. Bright remarked on Emma's jealousy.
(Strange Academy: Finals#5) - After Emily Bright became corrupted by
the power of the dread Dormammu, Zelma Stanton retrieved Emma and
returned to the battlefield with Emma, generating illusions of Emily's
parents to further convince Emily of the folly of her villainous
actions.
(Strange Academy: Finals#6) - Emily quickly realized her parents
were nothing more than illusions generated by Zelma and she destroyed
them, terrifying Emma.
Comments: Created by Skottie Young and Humberto Ramos.
It's very possible that the Emma
we see in Strange Academy: Finals#5-6 is also an illusion generated by
Zelma Stanton, much in the way that the Mr. & Mrs. Bright were in
those issues. However, when Emily Bright destroys Zelma's illusions, we
only see the Mr. & Mrs. Bright dissipate, much to the terror of
Emma, who was standing behind them. That, to me, suggests that it
might've been the real Emma present since we weren't explicitly shown
Emma dissipating. Of course, we also didn't see Emma after that scene
either so one might argue that the potentially illusory Emma dissipated
and that's why we didn't see her again and the real Emma was safely
still with Emily's parents.
