the Collector spying on the Avengers The COSMIC VIEWER

Classification: Extraterrestrial technology

Creator: Unrevealed

Users/Possessors: The Collector (Taneleer Tivan)

Location: Sub-space, Collector's base, Collector's Museum, with access from a location beyond the stratosphere of planet Earth

First Appearance: Avengers I#51 (April, 1968)

Powers/Abilities/Functions: The Cosmic Viewer was a device that could scan the entire universe to find any creature upon which the Collector focused his will. The focus could be on a single being or on a set or groups or a classification in the user's mind, for example "The Avengers" or "aliens on this planet".

Once the user selected the targets, the Viewer could also record and collect their most recent events, allowing the user to see them in a second time.

The events were shown on a screen of different sizes, as if an observer were only a few yards from the target.

a viewer with a small screenHistory: (Avengers I#51) - The Collector's ship was in the skies above New York when Taneleer Tivan used the Cosmic Viewer to spy on the Avengers.

The Collector spied on Hercules, learning that he had returned to Olympus.

After enslaving Thor with an Obedience Potion, the Collector showed the god of thunder what trap he had set up for the other Avengers, allowing him to see the events through the Cosmic Viewer.

A short time later, after the other Avengers had been imprisoned, the Collector used the Viewer again. Thor and he could watch Captain America and the Black Panther while they were in Africa. Looking for nearer prey, the Collector pointed the Viewer on Hulk, seeing that the registration showed the Bifrost with the Jade Giant entering Asgard. Then the Collector focused the Cosmic Viewer on Iron Man, and saw that the Avenger had just returned in New York.

Minutes later, the wondrous spying device was apparently destroyed. The whole Collector's starship exploded because of the enormous damage caused by the Collector's Robotoid.

(Iron Man I#26) - On the spaceship which was used to imprison Happy Hogan and Pepper Potts, the Collector had a Universal View-Crystal, which seemed to have the same function and power of the Cosmic Viewer.

(Avengers I#159 - BTS/ I#162 (fb) - BTS/ I#165 (fb) - BTS /  I#168 - BTS / I#170-171 - BTS) - Many Avengers were spied upon via a Viewer by the Collector. Many of them were subsequently teleported through the time machine into stasis tubes on Tivan's sub-spatial ship.

(Avengers I#172) - The Collector used a Cosmic Viewer with a smaller screen to spy on the Avengers Iron Man, Wasp and Yellowjacket, to choose the right moment to kidnap other Avengers.

(Avengers I#174 - BTS) - A few hours later, the Collector was incinerated by Korvac, and the Avengers left the ship (which contained the viewer) in sub-space.

(Marvel Team-Up Annual#7) - Again on Earth, after his return from death, the Collector sought the last Plodex for his collection.

Watching the Viewer, Tivan scanned the planet for life forms that registered as aliens. The Viewer screen showed several aliens: a Technarch, a Cloud-Being, Dire Wraiths, even the symbiote worn by Spider-Man web-slinging in New York. Eventually, the Viewer found Marrina swimming nearby.

One of the causes of the extremely large number of items and specimens of the Collector's collection is the Cosmic Viewer. Taneleer Tivan was able to find an interesting sample simply by concentrating on it with the Viewer. Another cause was his virtually unaging state, which gave him all the time he needed to gather specimen.

CLARIFICATIONS:
The Cosmic Viewer appears to be distinct from the Universal View-Cristal, and it
should be distinguished from:

the Collector spying on the AvengersUniversal View-Crystal

A tool still used by the Collector, and very similar to the Cosmic Viewer, was the Universal View-Crystal.

Through the Crystal, the Collector could display an item that he deemed highly valuable for his collection: the Solar Sword.
The Crystal was able to show the Solar Sword even if it was in the Citadel of Luminia in another dimension, the Dark Dimension.

The Crystal was very large, at least 15 feet high, and it was contained in one of the Collector's spaceships with many other samples.

A few months after the Cosmic Viewer was destroyed by the Robotoid, the Collector used another spaceship with another Universal View-Crystal.
The Collector left the Dark Dimension and the Earth without the Solar Sword, but the Crystal was still on his spaceship.
