During Leonard Samson's lecture on professional ethics, she noticed her old classmate Karla Sofen in the crowd. The two women went to lunch to catch up, on the way Karla excitedly told her about the new practice she had just started, describing how she'd been working with a woman, Angela, suffering from low self-esteem issues. Interest turned to horror as Joanne watched Karla call Angela from a pay phone. Sofen threw her voice, pretending to be another woman looking for her husband. Joanne was at a loss for words when Sofen simply explained that she couldn't afford to have Angela cured yet.

Vault I#1) - Posing as Karla Sofen, Monroe walked into the Chicago
offices of doctor Joanne Cheung, who was surprised to see her. Meeting
on a park bench, "Sofen" noticed Cheung was a little afraid and tried to
assure her she wasn't Moonstone anymore. Cheung fired back: she wasn't
afraid of Moonstone, she was afraid of what Karla Sofen was capable off,
listing all the unethical, immoral things she did: from manipulating her
patients to becoming Moonstone and joining the Thunderbolts to work for
redemption. Cheung went on to note that Sofen suffered from both an
insecurity and an inferiority complex, which are deep, conflicting flaws
that would never be resolved without help. Impressed by the analysis,
"Karla" asked Joanne if she'd be willing to help her. The doctor
refused, telling her she'd never be able to trust that she was being
honest with her or herself. She then walked off, leaving "Karla" to
ponder the wisdom of her words.
