History:

(Thunderbolts: Distant Rumblings I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Joanne Cheung studied psychology with Karla Sofen in Chicago. After graduation, they lost touch.

(Thunderbolts: Distant Rumblings I#1(fb) - BTS) - Now a certified psychologist, Joanne Cheung started a private practice in the Chicago area.

(Thunderbolts: Distant Rumblings I#1) - Joanne Cheung attended the Midwestern convocation on psychiatry in Chicago along with dozens of doctors and psychology students. During Leonard Samson's lecture on professional ethics, she noticed her old classmate Karla Sofen in the crowd. The two women went to lunch to catch up, on the way Karla excitedly told her about the new practice she had just started, describing how she'd been working with a woman, Angela, suffering from low self-esteem issues. Interest turned to horror as Joanne watched Karla call Angela from a pay phone. Sofen threw her voice, pretending to be another woman looking for her husband. Joanne was at a loss for words when Sofen simply explained that she couldn't afford to have Angela cured yet.

(Thunderbolts: From The Marvel Vault I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Over the years, Cheung watched how her old classmate went from colleague to supervillain after manipulating the original Moonstone to give up his alien gem.

(Thunderbolts: From The Marvel Vault I#1 - BTS) - Jack Monroe, the former Scourge, decided to investigate the Thunderbolts who he had recently faced as a mind controlled pawn of Henry Gyrich. Using an image inducer, he went to visit friends and relatives of the villains turned heroes in an attempt to find out what made them tick.

(Thunderbolts: From The Marvel Vault I#1) - Posing as Karla Sofen, Monroe walked into the Chicago offices of doctor Joanne Cheung, who was surprised to see her. Meeting on a park bench, "Sofen" noticed Cheung was a little afraid and tried to assure her she wasn't Moonstone anymore. Cheung fired back: she wasn't afraid of Moonstone, she was afraid of what Karla Sofen was capable off, listing all the unethical, immoral things she did: from manipulating her patients to becoming Moonstone and joining the Thunderbolts to work for redemption. Cheung went on to note that Sofen suffered from both an insecurity and an inferiority complex, which are deep, conflicting flaws that would never be resolved without help. Impressed by the analysis, "Karla" asked Joanne if she'd be willing to help her. The doctor refused, telling her she'd never be able to trust that she was being honest with her or herself. She then walked off, leaving "Karla" to ponder the wisdom of her words.

Fabian Nicieza once again proves his reputation as a lover of continuity by bringing back a one page character from a 1997 flashback issue of Thunderbolts. And to make it even more obscure, she comes back in an inventory story that wouldn't even have seen the light of day if Marvel hadn't uncovered a bunch of unpublished stories when they moved offices in 2010.
