GENEVIEVE DARCENEAUX

Real Name: Genevieve Darceneaux

Identity/Class: Human; French Citizen

Occupation: Thief

Affiliations: Gambit

Enemies: Martin Herzog; Sabretooth

Known Relatives: Unnamed Father

Aliases: "Genny"

Base of Operations: Paris, France

First Appearance: X-Men II#33 (June, 1994)

History: BTS- Genevieve had an affair with rich Canadian financier Martin Herzog, before stealing L'Etroile du Tricherie, a valuable pendant, from him and running off.

(X-Men II#33)- While running from Sabretooth, who was hired by Herzog to retrieve the pendant, Genevieve was assisted by Gambit, who chased Sabretooth away. Sabretooth tracked them for days, while Gambit romanced her to get closer to the pendant. Eventually they got to know each other very well, and while she was sleeping, Gambit took L'Etroile du Tricherie from her bedside. Sabretooth, still lurking in the shadows, kidnapped Genevieve while Gambit made his way back to his brother Henri LeBeau's apartment, jewel in hand. Unfortunately for him, Sabretooth had also kidnapped his brother. On the roof of Notre Dame, Sabretooth gave Gambit an ultimatum: the lives of Genevieve and Henri, or the pendant. Gambit gave the pendant to Sabretooth, who dropped them both. Only being able to reach one, Gambit saved his brother, letting Genevieve fall to her death. With her last breath, Genevieve told Gambit that she really did love him and would have given him the pendant if he had only asked.

According to Gambit's brother, Henri, Genevieve's father was an infamous jewel thief who was spending some quality time in jail at the time.

Stealing the pendant was Gambit's way of earning his place amongst the Thieve's Guild elite.

This was Gambit's first meeting with Sabretooth, who told this story to Rogue years later. It obviously caused some friction between Gambit and Rogue and worried Gambit a bit about what else he told her about their past encounters.

Henri is not Gambit's blood brother, but Gambit was adopted into his family or something.

Martin Herzog: was a Canadian financier with "European interests", and cheated on his wife with Genevieve, who then stole L'Etroile du Tricherie from him. Enraged, he hired Sabretooth to bring it back, which Sabretooth successfully did. -X-Men II#33

Le Etroile du Tricherie: Translates to "The Cheating Star". It was under the possession of Martin Herzog, before it was stolen by his then-lover, Genevieve Darceneaux. Gambit then stole it from her, before Sabretooth retrieved it for Herzog. Presumably, it's still under Herzog's possession. -X-Men II#33
