History:
(New Mutants III#16 (fb) - BTS) - General Combest recruited General
Ulysses to head up Project Purgatory, showing him 13 acquired mutant
babies (who had been taken during the Inferno events). As Doctor Noc
experimented on the babies, it was discovered they could use the
babies' blood to send them to Limbo, where time passed differently and
the babies could be trained as super-powered military operatives.
(New Mutants III#16 (fb) - BTS) - Ulysses and Noc were sent to Limbo to raise the kids and train them. As months passed on Earth, years passed in Limbo.
(New Mutants III#16 (fb)) - When the mutant operatives were lost to demons and reported dead, Ulysses contacted Combest, asking for permission to return to Earth, but Combest was worried about demon contagion, so he ordered the gate sealed and told Ulysses that he and his men would have to fend for themselves.
(New Mutants III#15 (fb) - BTS) - Ulysses, Noc, and others returned to Earth, more years having passed.
(New Mutants III#15) - Combest met with Noc and Ulysses (who now had one demonic limb), furious that they refused his orders to file a full report, as they wanted to focus their energies on obtaining Magik instead. Combest refused them and Ulysses argued that he now outranked Combest, given the years he'd spent in Limbo, then Ulysses' demon-limb grabbed Combest of its own will, making him bleed. Escaping from the demon, Combest again ordered the men to go after the babies and not Magik.
(New Mutants III#16) - Combest received word that Ulysses had taken helicopters on an unauthorized mission, and he was furious. Combest assembled his forces and went to confront Ulysses, who revealed that he still had the mutants in his control. He had the mutants activate their powers, and Combest was killed in a power blast.
