(X-Men Unlimited II#9/1 (fb) - BTS) - While in the merchant marines Johnny met Logan.
(X-Men Unlimited II#9/1 (fb) - BTS) - After their days in the marines the two became drinking buddies, first and foremost. To earn an extra buck the duo competed in boxing matches, winning most.
(X-Men Unlimited II#9/1 (fb) ) - One night, Johnny and Logan drank the spoils of their victory after Johnny had won another boxing match. The duo took three girls with them on a stroll through the town when they were ambushed by several angry hillbillies. Threatening them with a gun the hillbillies claimed the fight had been fixed and sought to return their investment. However, when the trigger-happy gunman tried to shoot Logan it was Johnny who jumped in front of his buddy to catch the bullet. Shocked to see his friend on the floor Logan quickly drew his claws and murdered the hillbillies. Amidst the bloodbath Logan asked Johnny why he'd jumped as he easily could've taken the shot. Johnny replied he wasn't thinking and felt it was what friends did.
(X-Men Unlimited II#9/1 (fb) - BTS) - Johnny eventually recovered from the shooting, now equipped with a cane he appeared to be as (head)strong as ever. After marrying Grace she would be the only one to stop him and put all the bad days behind him.
(X-Men Unlimited II#9/1 (fb) - BTS) - Johnny died, leaving his wife Grace behind.
(X-Men Unlimited II#9/1 - BTS) - Logan attended Johnny's funeral, feeling he went to more funerals than weddings. After the funeral he spoke with Grace telling her that what perspective he did have, he got it from Johnny. Grace then offered Logan Johnny's cane, he, however refused the gift feeling he'd already given him enough.

It's unclear if Johnny had married Grace before or after the shooting, for this profile I've put it after the incident as she helped him put all the bad days behind him.
